Dublin-based CityJet reports loss of €16.8m in 2023

Troubled Dublin-based CityJet made a loss of €16.8 million in 2023 following a surge in operating expenses.
The regional airline, which was once Ireland's third carrier after Aer Lingus and Ryanair, filed accounts for the year ended December 31st on Friday.
They show operating expenses grew to almost €97 million from just under €80 million in 2022.
At the same time, turnover came down from €131 million to €129 million mainly as a result of lower flying activities during the year.

The group had been in profit at the end of the previous 12 month period, when it made €4.7 million.

The main activities of the company, which was once best known for flying routes out of London City Airport, include aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, as well as wet leasing, where it provides serviced aircraft and crews to operate routes for other carriers.
At the end of the year it had net liabilities of €35.6 million.
The company has not operated any scheduled flights under its own name since 2018, and its difficulties have continued since then.

as interim examiners in recent weeks, which was the third time the airline has sought protection from creditors since its inception.
It survived one process in 1996 and again in 2020 after its fleet was grounded by the Covid pandemic.
Under risks facing the business, it warned in the 2023 accounts that much of its revenue at that time was concentrated on one customer. It noted impending engine overhauls and other redelivery costs due to fall over the following year.
The directors concluded there were material uncertainties that cast 'significant doubt' over its ability to continue as a going concern over the following year.
It also pointed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the inflationary pressures brought about as a result.
However, under subsequent events, it said it was able to sign 10 crew, maintenance and insurance lease agreements with various airline customers in June 2024, which would run to October 2028, as well as five other agreements of the same nature that would run to October 2025.
The company also received funding by way of a loan amounting to €3.8 million that is payable in September 2029 and which bears 3 per cent interest per annum.
The group had a tax liability of €160,000 at the end of the year, up from €150,000 a year earlier. It employed 605 people in the year, up from 582. It spent €48.1 million on staff, up from €45.5 million in 2022.

Forty-eight hours before Mairead McGuinness had dropped out of the presidential race last week, a beaming Heather Humphreys was milling around the sun-drenched Ballinamore Agricultural Show in Co Leitrim. The apparently retired politician was blissfully unaware that she was doing the groundwork for a campaign she didn't yet know she'd be running in. Such is the charmed fortune of Humphreys, for whom the stars have aligned to suddenly make her the clear favourite for the Fine Gael nomination for the presidential election. Not even a week after it lost its front-runner candidate, Fine Gael now has two heavy hitters vying for the nomination. READ MORE Within an hour of each other on Tuesday morning, Humphreys and Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly had both thrown their hats into the ring. Choosing to announce her intention to run on Northern Sound, the local radio station in her native Cavan-Monaghan constituency, Humphreys appeared to have used her weekend well. She presented a distilled vision for her campaign, citing her role shepherding the Government through the successful 1916 commemorations; her time as minister for business, enterprise and innovation during Brexit; and her experience as social protection minister during the pandemic. The theme of her campaign will be community, she said, drawing on her background as a manager of a credit union and the valuable time she spent travelling around the country as communities minister. Senior Fine Gael figures tend to become quite rhapsodical when they think of how many plaques across the country have her name on them. Humphreys also made a pointed reference to the concerning rise in racist attacks in Ireland. Humphreys and Kelly are now trying to enter a race that they both comprehensively ruled themselves out of. For Humphreys, she is presenting her decision not to contest as a gesture of loyalty to her friend McGuinness, who she didn't wish to run against. And many in Fine Gael are already presenting the former minister's eight months out of politics as a restorative break. Minister for Culture Patrick O'Donovan waxed lyrical on national radio on Tuesday about how the green-fingered Humphreys had used her time off to grow 'the finest spuds and onions and turnips and parsnips anywhere you'll get 'em'. Kelly used his announcement on Tuesday to row back on his claim in July that the presidency was a 'ceremonial' role, saying now that there was 'huge potential in the job, it is the highest honour in Ireland'. Kelly will draw heavily on his experience as GAA president and the deep grassroots support he enjoys in Munster in his bid for a nomination, though it will be clear to the seasoned campaigner that at this point he is the David to Humphreys's Goliath. The MEP will now face an uphill battle over the next two weeks to win the support of the 20 TDs and Senators that he requires for his nomination, given many Fine Gael parliamentarians have backed Humphreys. Like Humphreys, he will also require the support of 25 Fine Gael councillors and five members of the Executive Council. The message from Team Kelly is that it will be the party's duty to allow or maybe even facilitate a contest between the two aspirant presidential candidates. Speaking on Morning Ireland, Kelly made the pointed remark that Fine Gael has not enjoyed a contest 'for a long time now' – including when Simon Harris became the uncontested leader last year. There are still fresh bruises in Kelly's native Kerry about what many saw as the cack-handed way that party HQ managed the last general election, resulting in Fine Gael not winning a seat in Kerry at all. Any perception that the Munster man has been blocked by those in Leinster House will not go down well. More senior Fine Gael figures are already understood to be preparing to declare for Humphreys. If that happens with enough pace and traction over the next few days, the writing may be on the wall. But Kelly is fiercely competitive and bolstered by his own supporters. The Fine Gael campaign for the nomination to run for president has started in earnest.

The eight-time All-Ireland winner, who has worked for Dublin's Northeast Inner City (NEIC), took over from Sanctuary Runners' founder Graham Clifford a year ago. The former Dublin GAA star will conclude his time with the Sanctuary Runners in the coming weeks. 'I've had an amazing year at the helm of this very positive movement,' Macauley said. 'I've made the difficult decision to move on to other projects, but I am still very committed to the power of community integration through sport. 'Although I will no longer be Chief Executive, I plan to continue to show solidarity in my Sanctuary Blue and I truly value the great friendships I've made all around the country,' he added. Sharing the news on LinkedIn, he said it had been an 'absolute privilege' steering the blue ship for the past year. Sanctuary Runners was named 'Community Organisation of the Year' at this year's Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Awards under his stewardship. Older employees who are disturbed by younger, more boisterous colleagues in the workplace are not victims of age harassment, a UK employment tribunal has ruled. Employees in their 20s and 30s may annoy more mature co-workers by chatting, socialising and looking at their phones but they are not breaking workplace equality rules, the tribunal said. The ruling came in the case of Catherine Ritchie, an administrator in her late 60s who took her bosses to an employment tribunal for grievances including the noisy fun her younger co-workers were having while she was trying to get on with her job. Ms Ritchie said she found it difficult to watch 'extreme time wasting and low productivity' from 'noisy and boisterous' younger colleagues and was left with a pounding headache and a hoarse voice from having to talk loudly to make herself heard. READ MORE The tribunal in Watford, Hertfordshire, heard that Ms Ritchie was 66 when she began working for an electrical engineering company and was the oldest person there. In its summary of the case, the tribunal said Ms Ritchie found the office a very noisy environment and that this was distracting when she was trying to make calls. It said: 'She indicated that she found it unprofessional of colleagues to engage in personal conversations in the office, when they ought to be working. She referred to the fact that they were not paid to socialise and that she had difficulty in watching such time wasting and low productivity.' She felt she was not respected when she asked for quiet and asked a manager if she could work from home but this was not allowed. Ms Ritchie was told by one manager that she should concentrate on reaching her targets and not concern herself with what was going on around her. The tribunal said what she experienced did not amount to harassment. It concluded: 'The tribunal accepted that the claimant took her work seriously and wished to remain professional at all times, but they considered that her projection of this standard to all those with whom she worked was not reasonable and resulted in her having unreasonable feelings of indignation about their behaviour when she did not have justifiable reason to do so. 'The tribunal considered that the claimant's perception of the noisy and disruptive behaviour as amounting to harassment was not reasonable.' – Guardian
