In 1975, a unique sight was seen outside the cinema hall. Women from nearby villages and towns, many of them elderly, came to watch the film in buses, carts and bullock carts. Inside the hall, many women would remove their slippers. Some were barefoot. They watched the story on the screen with reverence and wonder, as if they were attending a satsang. 'Jai Santoshi Maa' was not just a religious film for them, but a life-affirming one. Before this film began, puja used to happen in theatre
All this was repeated for months in hundreds of small towns and villages across the country. This film by first-time director Vijay Sharma was released on 30 May 1975, when the Emergency was four weeks away from being imposed in the country. 'Sholay' was released on 15 August, but no one could stop the popularity of the low-budget 'Jai Santoshi Maa'. Viewers would offer coins, flowers and rice to the screen. How did Jai Santoshi Maa become a huge success?
In the 1975 trade guide annual report, 'Jai Santoshi Maa' and 'Sholay' were given blockbuster status above 'Deewar'. The film celebrated golden and silver jubilees in many cities. According to Film Information magazine, a separate 9 am show for women was started in Malad, Bombay.
The impact of this film was not limited to just revenue. From the silent era to the 1960s, religious films were continuously made in the cinema market of Bombay. They were mocked by the educated urban people, but had a huge fan base among the common people. The opening credits of the film were written in Hindi, not in English, which was common at that time. The production of religious films decreased in the 1970s. Most of the films were unsuccessful except 'Sampoorna Ramayan' in 1973. 'Jai Santoshi Maa' produced by Satram Rohra breathed new life into this waning market.

'Saiyaara' has just left everyone shocked and surprised with its box office number. Just in the span of 4 days, the film is nearing towards Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office, thus has surpassed the film's budget which was Rs 45 crore as per reports. 'Saiyaara' has become the highest grossing opening weekend love story in Hindi cinema, with debutants. The film continues to lure the crowd as the Monday number also is expected to be good. The film's success is largely thanks to its strong connection with younger audiences, who have responded warmly to its emotional depth and storytelling. Saiyaara also brought Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda into limelight and they have received widespread praise for their powerful performances and natural chemistry. But do you know what 'Saiyaara' really means and why the makers gave this name to their movie? Rooted in both Urdu and Arabic, the word traditionally refers to a star or planet that moves across the sky. In Arabic, it implies continuous movement or rotation. In Urdu, it suggests a star, solitary yet radiant, one that travels alone but lights up the world around it. Yash Raj Films and Mohit Suri chose the title for its poetic and emotional depth, aiming to reflect themes of longing, eternal love, and emotional distance. The makers also tried to describe it in the official trailer of the film that, 'Saiyaara means a lonely star among the stars. Who by herself illuminates the whole world, you are my Saiyaara.' The film's music and title track also have gotten a solid response and remain a major character, thus adding to its reception at the box office.

Prithviraj says his first sense of belonging in the world is being Indian, not from Kerala

With 'Sarzameen', Prithviraj Sukumaran steps into the heart of a nation torn between ideals, identity, and unwavering love for one's homeland. The upcoming film, which explores themes of national duty, personal sacrifice, and moral conflict, features the popular actor as an officer on duty, one as vulnerable as he is fierce. At a time when patriotism is constantly being redefined and debated, India Today exclusively asked Prithviraj what it means to him. 'I only have one meaning for it. I don't have too many meanings for it,' he said, adding, 'When I say I'm patriotic, I mean that I absolutely love my country and I'm very proud of the fact that I'm an Indian.'advertisementThe actor exclaims, 'Wherever you go in the world, wherever I am in [any part of] the world, whatever I'm doing, my first sense of belonging is the fact that I'm from India. It's not the fact that I'm from Kerala, it's not the fact that I speak Malayalam, or that you speak Hindi, or are from Maharashtra. If tomorrow you're in some part of the world and people ask you where you're from, I'm not going to say I'm from Trivandrum. I'm going to say I'm from India. So that sense of belonging, and the pride in that sense of belonging, is what I think is patriotism for me. I'm deeply patriotic that way.' 'Sarzameen' is set to premiere on JioHotstar on July 25, 2025. The film also stars Kajol and Ibrahim Ali Khan in pivotal roles. - EndsYou May Also Like
