Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The 14-round second stage (Elite League) of the Iraqi Volleyball Premier League concluded this week, finalizing the lineup for the decisive championship playoff. The top four teams now advance to battle for the 2024-2025 league title in the upcoming 'Big Four' tournament hosted in Baghdad.
In the final round's key matches, Masafi Al-Shamal secured the top spot by defeating Ghaz Al-Junoob 3-1, finishing with 35 points. Al-Shorta cemented second place (33 points) with an important 3-1 victory over a resurgent Erbil side. Despite the loss, Erbil finished third (27 points), capping off an impressive run. Ghaz Al-Junoob claimed the fourth and final playoff spot, also on 27 points.
Notably, Erbil achieved their playoff qualification relying entirely on local players, without any professional foreign imports – a significant accomplishment highlighted by observers.

Iraqi Club Zakho drawn in Group A for Gulf Champions League

The Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation held the draw for the second edition of the Gulf Champions League for Clubs today, Monday, placing Iraqi club Zakho FC in Group A. The draw was conducted virtually via Zoom, in accordance with the tournament's regulations. Zakho FC, representing Iraq, will face tough competition in its group from Al-Ain FC of the United Arab Emirates, Al-Qadsia SC of Kuwait, and Sitra Club of Bahrain. The other participating clubs in the tournament are Al-Rayyan SC (Qatar), Al-Shabab FC (Saudi Arabia), Al-Nahda Club (Oman), and Tadhamon Hadramaut (Yemen). The competition is scheduled to run from September 16, 2025, to April 14, 2026. This second edition aims to enhance football competition among Gulf clubs and provide a professional environment for exchanging technical expertise. Notably, Iraqi club Duhok FC was the winner of the inaugural tournament in 2025, defeating Al-Qadsia SC in the final.
