Former USC players lament potential loss of Notre Dame rivalry Many former Trojans are paying close attention to the developments surrounding the USC-Notre Dame football series
Right now, the storied USC-Notre Dame rivalry appears it could be in serious jeopardy. The two schools do not have an extension to the series scheduled beyond 2026, and according to reports, they appear to be far apart on terms.
Naturally, the news has not been positively received within the USC community. In the days following the news, several former Trojan players have lamented the possibility of the rivalry ending.
"Losing the SC vs Notre Dame will be the dumbest thing I've ever witnessed," former USC offensive lineman Zach Banner tweeted. "My love and passion for that rivalry is 1 of the biggest reasons I moved my life to SoCal…"
In addition, former USC running back Petros Papadakis, now an LA sports radio host and Fox Sports college football analyst, ripped Trojan head coach Lincoln Riley for allegedly trying to get out of the series.
"College football has been taken over by the television companies, one of which I work for as you know," Papadakis said in an interview with John Canzano on sports radio 750 The Game in Portland, Oregon. "But honestly none of that in my opinion has anything to do with USC-Notre Dame, and should not have anything to do with USC-Notre Dame. And that's the beauty of USC-Notre Dame is that it transcends conference realignment, it transcends the NIL, and it transcends all of these different twists and turns in the sport. If it can survive World Wars it should be able to survive the selfishness and the absolute myopic nature of the era we live in.
"It's ridiculous to think that it wouldn't. Because Lincoln Riley doesn't like it? Who the hell is Lincoln Riley in the grand scheme of things when it comes to USC and Notre Dame?
"Lincoln Riley trying to wriggle out of Notre Dame. I've got news for you, if you can't beat Maryland or Minnesota, what the hell are you worried about playing Notre Dame or not. Collect the revenue. USC is not even close to competing. And if they were fourth in the Big Ten, trust me having Notre Dame on their resume, win or lose, is a lot better than beating someone 60-0 that is Missouri State. It's just very sad to me . . . any argument being made, the Big Ten, travel, all of this stuff. It all goes by the wayside. It's USC-Notre Dame. There's billions of dollars involved and the players are getting paid. Are you kidding? We're not going to play this? It's the dumbest thing I've heard in my life."
Papadakis is certainly known for being a bit of a contrarian, and he has a noted history of negativity on air towards his alma mater. But he does make some valid points. Riley has been at USC for less than four years, and the expanded college football playoff has existed for less than one. For those two things to cause the end of one of college football's greatest rivalries that has been around for nearly a century would truly be a shame.

Tennessee overcomes controversial call, defeats UCLA to reach Women's CWS semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Laura Mealer's RBI single in the ninth inning gave Tennessee a 5-4 win over UCLA on Sunday that lifted the Volunteers into the Women's College World Series semifinals and eliminated the Bruins. The game nearly had a controversial finish. UCLA's Megan Grant hit a two-run blast with two outs in the top of the seventh inning that appeared to tie the score at 4-all. There was an umpire review that appeared to involve whether or not Grant touched home plate. After a nearly 15-minute delay, the home run ruling was upheld because it was determined on the field that the runs were scored, and the home plate umpire announced that the play was not reviewable. Tennessee coach Karen Weekly said Tennessee noticed that Grant's teammates touched her and helped her back to home plate. Weekly believed that was illegal, which would have turned Grant's homer into the third out, so the Volunteers notified the umpires. Had Grant been called out, the game would have ended with Tennessee winning 4-2. 'I think everybody but four people (umpires) saw the play at the plate,' Weekly said. 'We saw in the dugout that she missed the plate, and then we saw that her teammates had kind of pushed her back. And by rule, that should have been nullified.' Grant said she didn't remember much after the 251-foot blast. 'It was just kind of a blackout moment." she said. 'I know going into that bat I just wanted to keep my mind right, stay aggressive. And honestly, after the swing, I did blackout indeed. After the fact, I just kind of trusted God with everything. The tensions were high and everything, and that's just where I just laid my pressure on.' Even after giving up the homer, Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens recovered and went the distance for the win. The first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American gave up four earned runs on 11 hits and struck out seven. 'Well, during that lengthy review/not review, we talked about if it comes back and it goes against us and we're tied up, then we keep playing," Weekly said. 'So we just kept putting them in that mindset — I think prepare for the worst. And then if the best happens, great.' Some of the Tennessee players were dancing near the circle during the review. 'No matter what the call was going to be, we're flushing it and worrying about the next pitch,' Pickens said. Taylor Pannell's two-run homer put Tennessee up 4-2 in the fifth to help set up the dramatic ending. She had three hits. UCLA's Alexis Ramirez and Sofia Mujica hit solo homers and Jordan Woolery had four hits. The Bruins (55-13) were trying to become the first semifinalist from the Big Ten since Michigan in 2015. Tennessee (47-16) will play Texas on Monday in the semifinals and will have the beat the Longhorns twice to advance to the best-of-three championship series. Texas will need to win just once to reach the championship series for the third time in four years. Pickens threw 148 pitches, but Weekly said her ace will be ready to go against the Longhorns. 'This is an absolute stud in volleyball and basketball and softball and could be playing D1 in any sport. So I think that works in her favor. Tonight's going to be all about recovery and hydration. There's no tomorrow. So Karlyn's going to be ready to come out tomorrow and fight for her team.'

Trailer for 'College Football 26' released, with game to include real-life coaches

After a successful first relaunch in 2024, the newest installation of EA Sports' "College Football" video game series will be back in full force this summer with some tweaks and changes. The trailer for "College Football 26" was released on Thursday, displaying some of the changes EA Sports made to the game following "College Football 25." Arguably, the biggest change in the game is that real coaches will be involved for the first time ever in the series. Over 300 current college football coaches, including assistants, lent their likeness for EA Sports to use in "College Football 26," according to a release. The release didn't share all of the coaches who agreed to be a part of "College Football 26." However, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, Ohio State's Ryan Day and Texas' Steve Sarkisian were seen in the trailer, while Penn State's James Franklin, Oregon's Dan Lanning and Georgia's Kirby Smart were among those named in the release. For the second straight year, thousands of players have agreed to lend their likeness for the "College Football" video game series. There will be over 2,800 new plays and "unique schemes" added to "College Football 26" from last year's game. The Wear and Tear feature also underwent changes, allowing users to "manage fatigue strategically and save your favorite playmakers for key moments with Dynamic Substitutions that allow you to rotate players in and out on the fly." In terms of game atmosphere, EA Sports also enhanced the Stadium Pulse feature for "College Football 26." In the newest edition of the game, there will be a more intense camera shake, new heads-up display visuals and a clock distortion that will force users to the high pressure of playing on the road at a hostile environment. Rivalry games, the College Football Playoff and high-stakes matchups will also be more impacted by Stadium Pulse. Other game features include the return of the Trophy Room (which shows all the trophies and accomplishments a user has won while playing the game) and Cross-Play across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in Dynasty Mode. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams were named as the cover athletes for the standard version of "College Football 26" on Tuesday. The deluxe version of the video game includes a few more star players (such as Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier), coaches (such as Day and Smart), legends (Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow, Denard Robinson) and mascots, along with Smith and Williams. "College Football 26" will be available for purchase on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 10. The game can also be preordered now through the EA Sports MVP bundle, which includes the deluxe versions of "College Football 26" and "Madden 26," granting three-day early access to both games.
