David Gee Campbell, often referred to as the town's founder, relocated his home to the south side of Johnson Drive, near Turkey Creek, in 1864. The house still stands today at 9503 Johnson Drive.

In 1948, activist Esther Brown helped Walker school families sue what was then known as the 'Johnson County Organized School District 90.' It boycotted for a year until the Kansas Supreme Court ruled in their favor, making the case a key precursor to the landmark 'Brown versus Board of Education' case.

Picnic-type food includes soups, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken BBQ, hot chicken sandwiches, ice cream and ice cream floats, beverages, desserts. • Schwarzwald United Church of Christ, 75 Church Lane Road, Exeter Township, will celebrate Father's Day on Sunday with coffee and donuts prior to the 10:30 a.m. worship service. • Christ Lutheran Church, 222 Niantic Road, Douglass Township, Montgomery County, will bless quilts made and assembled by members and friends of the congregation during its 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday. Coffee and Conversation will be held at 8:30 and 10 a.m. on Sunday in the Welcome Center. • The Rev. Mark Stryjak, pastor of Allegheny United Church of Christ, Route 568, Brecknock Township, will begin an eight-week sermon series, 'Putting Our Faith Into Action,' based on readings from the book of James, during the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday. • St. Andrew's United Church of Christ, 1320 Spruce St., Reading, will be holding a Strawberry Festival fundraising event today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Homemade chicken corn noodle soup, homemade beef vegetable soup; Weaver Market's subs; hot dogs; homemade macaroni salad; shoo-fly pies, strawberry crumb pies; strawberries and ice cream/shortcake; beverages; and assorted baked goods will be available for purchase to eat in or take out. • The Rev. Veterans who served our country also deserve a monthlong celebration
While I have no issue recognizing and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, I am wondering why an entire month is set aside each year? After all, we have Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day, and even one day is set aside to celebrate the birth of our country. Why is this particular community worthy of a month long celebration? Surely, veterans who have served or lost their life in service to this country deserve as much as this group.
