Max Holloway retains UFC BMF title, spoils Dustin Poirier's retirement fight
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Max Holloway said he wanted to play spoiler and he did it Saturday night in the main event.
Holloway defeated Dustin Poirier in a unanimous decision to retain the UFC BMF Championship in UFC 318 at the Smoothie King Center.
The win for Holloway is the first in three fights against Poirier, who beat him in 2012 and 2019.
Holloway (28-8) retained his BMF title after landing 98 more strikes (201-109) and landing 53% of his significant strikes.
Fighting against a partisan Louisiana crowd for the native son Poirier in his retirement match, Holloway was the quicker fighter for the entire match, knocking Poirier off his feet early in the first round.
In the second, another flurry of combinations put Poirier on the mat again, followed by two minutes of dominant grappling.
Poirier's best chance came in the last 30 seconds of the second round, getting Holloway on the ground with a chokehold and several ground punches before the round ended.
The loss ends a brilliant career for Poirier, who finishes his career with a 30-10 record. Poirier, the UFC Lightweight Interim Champion in 2019, also defeated the likes of Connor McGregor twice in addition to victories over Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler.
In the co-main event, Paulo Costa (15-4) snapped a three-match losing streak, defeating Roman Kopylov for a middleweight division win by a unanimous decision.
Daniel Rodriguez (20-5) won his third consecutive fight after a unanimous decision over Kevin Holland in welterweight action in a significant upset. Rodriguez was +425 to win the fight, but beat Holland (28-14), who lost his second fight of 2025.
In the featherweight division, Patricio Freire beat Dan Ige by a unanimous decision. Freire (37-8) dominated the three-round fight, taking down Ige five times.
The five-fight main card opened with a unanimous decision upset win by Michael Johnson over Daniel Zellhuber in the lightweight action. Johnson opened the fight +475 according to Bet MGM. Johnson (25-19) landed 81 strikes compared to only 52 from Zellhuber as he won his third consecutive fight.

It makes them very hard to beat and supreme confidence the way that he identified it and explained it to me was very rare in a way, that he only knew two people that ever had it: Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali. "And what it means is, it's an ability, not just confidence, but it's a belief that you just can't get beat. You go into the ring completely believing that there is nothing on earth that will keep you from winning that match. And even though they didn't win all their fights, they had that belief." Atlas wants to see Topuria take part in a mega fight on next year's White House event. "Topuria and (Paddy) Pimblett would be a good combination on the White House lawn because even though Pimblett doesn't have the skills that he has, Pimblett is more known because he's very creative, and he's very good at promoting himself," Atlas said. "One thing about Pimblett: I had him on my podcast, when he was just coming up, and they were looking to make him a star. I said, 'Let me give you one piece of advice,' and he's a good kid, he said. 'Sure, Teddy, what is that?' I said, 'Keep your chin down. You've got it up.' The old timer would say, 'It's like a lantern in the storm.'"

Matt Turner joins Revolution on loan from Lyon as he looks to get back to national team form
Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026. One of the reasons that Turner was displaced by New York City FC's Matt Freese at the U.S. starter at goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in June and July was that he hadn't played consistently at the club level for France's Lyon. Turner, 31, became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup. Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016. Cubs chairman says team's performance convinced him extending Hoyer's contract was right thing to do
Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts came into the season thinking about extending president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer's contract. The team's performance convinced him it was the right thing to do. 'We went into the season thinking about an extension,' Ricketts said Friday. "I think the team was playing well enough that Jed had really proven he put a good ballclub on the field. I've always been comfortable with Jed. He makes good baseball decisions, and he's really built a good organization.' The Cubs agreed to a multiyear extension with the 51-year-old Hoyer on Monday. His contract was set to expire at the end of this season, his 14th with the Cubs. Hoyer was hired as general manager in 2011 and replaced Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations following the 2020 season. Led by breakout All-Star Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago was second in the NL Central and a game behind Milwaukee at 63-45 entering Friday's matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. It lost two of three at Milwaukee this week. The Cubs added depth to their lineup and pitching staff before the trade deadline. They acquired utility player Willi Castro from the rebuilding Minnesota Twins and veteran left-hander Taylor Rogers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. They also got right-handers Michael Soroka from the Washington Nationals and Andrew Kittredge from Baltimore. 'I think the way he's methodically gone about developing the right players and bringing them up, looking for the right guys to add, being thoughtful about who he signs," Ricketts said. 'I think all those things have added up. He's had a good first four years.
