Urgent community support needed to complete classroom project at New Jerusalem Children's Home

The Citizen09-06-2025
The New Jerusalem Children's Home's additional classroom project is currently on hold due to a lack of funds.
The home is in the final stages of constructing new classrooms to better accommodate its learners, but it requires community support to complete the essential finishing touches.
Most of the work has been completed, including painting, window installation, and fencing, to name a few, however, the tiling and ceiling installations remain unfinished, and funding is needed to complete these remaining tasks.

This non-profit organisation provides shelter and care for more than 120 children who have been abandoned, abused, or traumatised. Earlier this year, the home began an expansion project to address overcrowding in its existing classrooms and to create a more conducive learning environment. Currently, there are eight classrooms, and the home has started building three new ones specifically for grades 9 and 11, and Afrikaans language learners.
Hopkins Kaira, the marketing manager of the home, emphasised the importance of these new classrooms. 'These new rooms will be essential for the learners, as they deserve to study in a welcoming environment that is not overcrowded,' said Kaira.

'We've already completed the painting, window installations, and fencing for the three new classrooms. The only remaining tasks are the ceiling and tiling, which are preventing us from moving the learners into their dedicated space.'
He explained that the current setup, where Grade 10 and 11 classes were combined, was not ideal, and completing the new classrooms would significantly enhance the learning experience.

To help the home reach its goal of providing a better educational environment for the children, community donations are essential.

Polokwane's Achiever Kabe to study orthopaedic surgery in the Caribbean

POLOKWANE – True to her name, a member of Jabez Christian Academy's Class of 2024, Achiever Kabe earlier this week left home to pursue her studies at the St George's University in Grenada in the West Indies for the next six years. She is enrolled for a MD degree and intends to specialise in orthopaedic surgery once she has completed her MD. Her expenditure will be funded by a bursary and augmented by her parents, Kenny, who is a manager at Eskom in Lephalale and Mahlodi, a businesswoman from the city and according to Achiever, she will miss her parents and siblings, Kyle (7) and Faith (9) who are her greatest supporters. Achiever prepared herself for her studies by taking mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences and business studies at Jabez and rounded it off with English and Afrikaans. She loves languages and is currently studying the Thai language. Achiever is a team player and is confident that she will motivate other students to follow their dreams. 'My desire is to help other people and I was exposed to medicine at a young age when I had to attend to the well-being of my siblings,' she explains and adds that every person needs a support system when everything goes well and even when it does not go so well. She started her secondary school career at Thabazimbi and according to Achiever, her year at Jabez Christian Academy solidified her ambition and discipline and put her on the right path to take her life to a higher level. She already has a driver's licence and is confident that she will hit the ground running when orientation starts as soon as she arrives. 'The first semester starts on the 12th of August and I intend to come home in December for the holidays,' she explained. 'Do your best and God will do the rest,' is her motto.

Councillor calls for action against litter crisis in Midrand

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe calls for immediate action from municipalities to address the litter and waste management crisis that is plaguing both the ward and the wider region. 'The escalating issue of litter and waste in Ward 132, as well as across our city, has reached critical levels. 'Everywhere you drive in our ward, from provincial roads to suburban areas, and even around informal settlements in our region, there are mounds of litter accumulating, with seemingly no action being taken to address this growing concern.' Read more: DA Ward 132 marks Mandela Day with hands-on community clean-up Deppe stressed the need for municipalities to implement immediate and effective strategies to ensure that waste is collected and disposed of properly. 'The neglect is not just an eyesore; it's a public health concern affecting our community's well-being. 'Our countryside, once a symbol of natural beauty, is now marred by waste. This is unacceptable. I call on the authorities to strongly consider reintroducing fines for littering as a deterrent. Additionally, a dedicated task force should be established to monitor and manage waste effectively, as current enforcement is lacking.' Additionally, Deppe insists that e-hailing services, and other transport operators, must ensure their drivers uphold environmental standards, and refrain from littering in the streets and parking areas. 'As a novel approach, utilising prisoners serving sentences for petty crimes to assist in cleaning up our suburbs and countryside could be explored.' She added that this situation requires immediate attention and action. She encourages municipal officials, community leaders, and residents to work together to restore cleanliness to the environment. 'I remain committed to advocating for these changes and will continue to champion initiatives that protect and enhance our living spaces.' Lonehill play park gets safety upgrade

Lonehill residents can look forward to a safer play environment for their children, as City Parks has officially appointed a contractor to install rubberised fall-safe surfaces at Lonehill Park. The upgrade, which began on August 15, will see all the children's play equipment fitted with rubberised surfacing, with the exception of one jungle gym that will be completed at a later stage. Councillor David Foley, of Ward 94, welcomed the development, noting that the idea was first raised after Beverley Park received a similar upgrade in November 2023. 'I requested City Parks to consider rubberising Lonehill's play park back then, and I'm delighted to see the project taking shape now.' Foley extended thanks to City Parks Region A manager Joseph Ndou for allocating the budget, as well as to his team who will oversee the project. On behalf of residents, Lonehill Residents Association spokesperson Shelly Miller expressed their gratitude. 'A big thank you to City Parks for making this happen. We really appreciate initiatives like this that improve our local spaces.' The new surfacing will not only enhance the park's safety; it also makes playtime more enjoyable for children in the community. Families can look forward to returning to a refreshed, child-friendly park once the work is complete.
