Carlos Alcaraz makes triumphant return in Rome

SPANISH star Carlos Alcaraz returned to competition from an adductor injury and had little trouble beating Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 64 of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Friday in Rome.
Alcaraz missed the Madrid Open in his home country last month to rest the injury and wore a knee wrap as a precaution on Friday. Still, the No. 3 seed notched his ATP Tour-best 25th win of the season in an hour and 22 minutes.
"The body is feeling great," Alcaraz said. "I moved well and made a few good sprints today without any pain and that is great. It was a test for me and I think I passed the test. I tried to feel more comfortable on the court -- moving and not thinking about the injury."
Alcaraz fired 24 winners to Lajovic's 13 and won 26 of 36 first-service points (72.2 percent). Lajovic could not keep up, facing 10 break points and saving six while breaking Alcaraz's serve just once.
Not to be outdone, No. 2 seed and defending champion Alexander Zverev of Germany flew past Argentina's Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-2, 6-1 in 66 minutes. Zverev finished with a massive 20-4 advantage in total winners and won 20 of 26 points (76.9 percent) at the net.
British fifth seed Jack Draper fired seven aces without a double fault and saved all seven break points he faced in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Italian Luciano Darderi. Draper was the runner-up in Madrid after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells earlier this year.
"I knew it was going to be tough, especially after the past fortnight," Draper said. "I put a lot of energy into that, so coming here to different conditions, a different environment, I had to adapt quickly against a good player in a different atmosphere. I thought I did a great job today of handling that, and hopefully as the rounds progress, I can keep on getting better."
The Italian fans were treated to No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti taking care of business against Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen 6-3, 6-2. The biggest upset of the day also favored an Italian, wild card Francesco Passaro, who eliminated Bulgarian 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 6-3.
No. 9 seed Holger Rune of Denmark rallied past Argentina's Francisco Comesana 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while No. 10 Daniil Medvedev of Russia topped British lucky loser Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-2.
Other winners included No. 13 seed Arthur Fils of France, No. 18 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, No. 23 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia, No. 24 seed Alexei Popyrin of Australia, Lithuanian qualifier Vilius Gaubas, Serbia's Laslo Djere and Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva.
American Brandon Nakashima, the 28th seed, advanced via walkover following Australian Jordan Thompson's withdrawal. Also, Frenchman Corentin Moutet was ahead 6-3, 4-0 when countryman and 21st seed Ugo Humbert retired due to a lingering hand injury. - Field Level Media/Reuters

Bromell scorches 100m as Chebet shines at Rome Diamond League

ROME: American Trayvon Bromell set the fastest time over the 100m this season as he won the Rome Diamond League in 9.84 seconds on Friday. Bromell, a two-time world outdoor bronze medallist and 2016 world indoor champion, dominated the field, with compatriot Fred Kerley coming in fifth in 10.06sec. Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme (9.99) and Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala (10.01) rounded out the podium in the blue riband event. Kenya's Beatrice Chebet, who won Olympic golds in the 5,000 and 10,000m in Paris last year, posted the second fastest time of all time in the women's 5,000m, clocking 14:03.69 after a stunning solo breakaway at the Stadio Olimpico. It was just three seconds off Gudaf Tsegay's world record set in Eugene in 2023, the Ethiopian finishing third in the Italian capital as the field struggled with Chebet's kick four laps out from the finish. "I was planning to run 14:15, but I felt like my body was moving and I decided to go," said Chebet. "So I see that my body is in a good shape and I am capable of of the world record. So now I am going home and will prepare for it. Everything is possible. If I get someone who will push me up to 3000, it is possible." Another Olympic champion, Quincy Hall of the USA, held his nerve to claim victory in the men's 400m in 44.22sec, winning in a photo finish from fast-finishing South African Zakithi Nene. There was a first Diamond League win since 2022 for Sandi Morris in the women's pole vault, the American clearing 4.80m for the victory. "Today is monumental for me on a personal level," said Morris, a three-time world silver medallist. "I have been fighting with problems with my shoulder so I have to keep the volume of jumps lower. I really wanted to keep jumping but I also listen to my goals." There was, however, no glory for Gianmarco Tamberi in the men's high jump in front of his adoring fans. The joint 2020 Olympic gold medallist, also the current European and world champion, bombed out at a lowly 2.16m in a competition won by South Korea's Sanghyeok Woo, with a best of 2.32m. - AFP

Clinical Norway hand Italy painful 3-0 defeat

NORWAY stunned Italy with a 3-0 win on Friday, handing the visitors a humiliating start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. In Group I, Norway lead the standings with nine points after three matches. Italy were playing their first match in the qualifying campaign. The soaking wet home crowd had reason to cheer after 14 minutes when Alexander Sorloth timed his run perfectly onto a through ball from Antonio Nusa and slotted it home from close range. Nusa lit up the night with a moment of brilliance after 34 minutes, controlling a pass with a slick first touch, bursting past two Italian defenders with a dazzling run, and drilling it in from the edge of the box. The first-half rout continued when another through ball from Martin Odegaard found an unmarked Erling Haaland, who rounded Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to score Norway's third just before the break. The continued pouring rain cooled the match down in second-half with Norway coming closest with substitute Patrick Berg sending a screamer into the post just after the hour mark, but no more goals were scored.
