Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir on Thursday said that national unity was imperative in the fight against terrorism and assured that the armed forces of Pakistan would spare no effort in ensuring the safety and security of the people of Pakistan.
During a visit to Bannu, Gen Asim Munir said that the planners and facilitators of the dastardly terrorist attack on the Bannu cantonment would be brought to justice soon, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the military, said.
Gen Asim Munir highlighted that terrorist groups, including Fitna al-Khawarij the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) – continued to operate from the Afghan soil against Pakistan, adding that there was clear evidence that Afghanistan remained a safe haven for such elements.
On Tuesday, security forces foiled a terrorist attack, including multiple suicide bomb blasts, on the Bannu cantonment, killing all 16 terrorists in swift action. Five servicemen and 13 civilians were also martyred in the attack staged by terrorists, allegedly belonging to the Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group.
According to the ISPR, Gen Asim Munir visited Bannu on Thursday, where he was briefed on the ongoing operations and the overall security situation of the area. He also visited the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) to enquire about the well-being of the injured soldiers.
The army chief commended the high morale and steadfast resolve of the troops and acknowledged their resilience and unwavering dedication. He reaffirmed that the Pakistan army would continue to serve as a bulwark against terrorism to ensure the security and stability of the state.
He said that while the perpetrators of the incident were neutralised instantly by the valiant soldiers, however, the planners and facilitators of the dastardly attack would also be brought to justice soon, wherever they may be, the ISPR said in a statement.
While addressing the troops, Gen Asim Munir lauded their heroic actions, recognising their swift and decisive response in neutralising the attackers and thwarting their nefarious designs. He said that targeting children, women and the elderly exposed the true intentions of Khwarij as enemies of Islam.
The army chief stated that terrorist groups, including the Fitna al-Khawarij, continued to operate from Afghan soil against Pakistan, but added that the fight against the Khwarij and their facilitators, who were acting at the behest of hostile elements, would continue until its logical conclusion.
The army chief underscored that the use of foreign weapons and equipment in recent terrorist attacks was clear evidence that Afghanistan remained a safe haven for such elements. He reaffirmed that no entity would be allowed to disrupt Pakistan's peace and stability.
While emphasising the pivotal role of the local community, the army chief reiterated that national unity was imperative in the fight against terrorism and assured that the Armed Forces of Pakistan would spare no effort in ensuring the safety and security of the people of Pakistan.
During the visit, the army chief expressed profound condolences to the families of innocent civilians who lost their lives in this heinous and cowardly terrorist incident. Earlier upon his arrival, Gen Asim Munir was received by the Peshawar corps commander.

Key economic sectors: LCCI disappointed over lack of broader relief
LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) acknowledged some positive measures in the federal budget 2025-26 but expressed disappointment over the lack of broader relief for key economic sectors. Following Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb's budget speech, LCCI leaders addressed a press conference, stating that while some of their demands were met, the business community had expected more substantial measures to stimulate investment, industrial growth, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and agriculture. LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad, along with Senior Vice President Engineer Khalid Usman, Vice President Shahid Nazir Chaudhry, and former office-bearers including Mian Anjum Nisar, Muhammad Ali Mian, Ali Hussam Asghar, and Faheem ur Rehman Sahgal, shared their insights on the budget. A significant number of executive committee members and market association presidents also attended the conference. Mian Abuzar Shad noted that the increased defense budget was a necessary step but argued that further increments should have been made. He welcomed relief measures for the construction sector and appreciated the higher allocation for water projects, though he stressed that even greater funding was needed given current challenges. Shad highlighted that the LCCI's long-standing demand for simplified tax returns had been accepted. While the super tax was reduced, he described the cut as insignificant and called for a more substantial reduction. He praised the imposition of taxes on the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA), a measure the LCCI had long advocated for. He pointed out that 45 government entities are being merged or abolished but emphasized the need to divest all loss-making public sector enterprises. Other positive steps included tax reductions in the real estate sector, lower duties on property transactions, the establishment of Daanish University, and measures to curb sales tax evasion. Bringing e-commerce into the tax net was also commended as a good decision. However, Shad expressed concern over under-invoicing and Afghan trade, which he claimed had cost Pakistan Rs. 25 trillion over the past 15 years. He also criticized unchecked petroleum imports for negatively impacting foreign exchange reserves. Additionally, he voiced disappointment over the absence of specific measures to support SMEs. Engineer Khalid Usman criticized the budget for lacking a clear growth strategy. He stated that the minor tax relief for salaried individuals was insufficient and called for further reductions. He also argued that taxing petroleum products would discourage the documented economy. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Brain drain: Pakistan lost 727,381 workers to overseas employment in 2024
The Bureau of Emigration & Overseas Employment (BE&OE) and the Overseas Employment Corporation (OEC) registered 727,381 workers for overseas employment, according to The Economic Survey 2024-25 as unveiled by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Monday. According to BE&OE, more than 62 percent (452,562) of Pakistani workers moved to Saudi Arabia for employment, followed by Oman (11 percent), to earn a living. UAE employed 64,130 Pakistani workers (9 percent) while Qatar offered jobs to 40,818 individuals (6 percent). Bahrain and Malaysia hosted 25,198 workers (3 percent) and 5,790 workers (1 percent), respectively. In 2024, the highest number of workers who moved away from Pakistan for work originated from Punjab (404,345), followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (187,103), Sindh (60,424), and Tribal areas (29,937). The Economic Survey also failed to calculate the unemployment rate for the current year. Pakistan missed its GDP growth target of 3.6% in the outgoing fiscal year, posting a figure of 2.7%, revealed the Economic Survey 2024-25. The skill composition of Pakistani emigrants in 2024 continues to be dominated by unskilled and semi-skilled labour, with relatively low representation from mid to highly-skilled professionals. According to the data, 50 percent of emigrants are categorized as unskilled (366,092), while 35 percent (255,706) are skilled workers. Although there has been a slight decline compared to 2023, unskilled labour remains in high demand globally, particularly in the areas of construction, domestic work, and agriculture. Earlier this year, Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir stated that the country's global diaspora constitutes not 'brain drain' but rather a crucial 'brain gain', according to a statement from the military's media release. While addressing a convention, the army chief said that those peddling the 'brain drain' myth should know this is actually brain gain, adding that the overseas community exemplifies this brilliantly. Brain drain in Pakistan: causes, consequences and way forward The total population of Pakistan according to Seventh Population and Housing Census (2023) has reached 241.5 million; growing at 2.55 percent annually. The population comprises 124.32 million (51.5%) males and 117.15 million (48.5) females. A significant share of Pakistan's population is young, with 26% aged 15-29 years, while 53.8% fall within the working-age group of 15-59 years. This demographic dividend presents a unique opportunity for economic expansion and development. Brain drain is a growing concern for developing countries like Pakistan, as these countries invest heavily in the education and training of their youth.
