Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to deliver keynote address at International IDEA Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar will deliver a keynote address at the International IDEA Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity tomorrow, according to an official statement.
As per the statement from the Election Commission of India, Kumar, who is in Sweden to attend the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity, being organised from June 10-12, had a memorable interaction with the Indian Diaspora in Sweden.
The CEC reiterated the Election Commission's focus on inclusive participation and civic engagement among Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). He highlighted initiatives such as the Online Voter Registration System and the Electronic Transmission of Postal Ballot Management System (ETPBMS), aimed at enabling greater participation of overseas voters.
The official statement noted that underlining India's leadership in election management, CEC Gyanesh Kumar has been invited to deliver the inaugural keynote address at the Conference beginning tomorrow.
The massive scale of the Indian elections and the magnitude of the logistics involved in the exercise evince keen interest amongst the Election Management Bodies (EMBs) across the world. Over 100 participants representing around 50 countries are taking part in the Conference, which is being organised by the International IDEA in collaboration with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Election Authority, and the Australian Electoral Commission.
As per the statement, the CEC will begin his meetings with the senior officials of International IDEA, including the Secretary General, Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA on Monday. This would be followed by detailed one-to-one bilateral meetings with the Chief Election Commissioners of nearly 20 countries including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, South Africa, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, and Switzerland amongst others, further reinforcing India's commitment to global democratic cooperation and the exchange of best practices in the coming days.
Besides others, CEC Gyanesh Kumar would also be interacting with other senior international counterparts, including Leena Rikkila Tamang, Director (Asia-Pacific), International IDEA; Dr Elsie T Nghikembua, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia; and Abdool Rahman Mohammad Irfan, Electoral Commissioner of Mauritius.
The statement highlighted that the Stockholm Conference brings together heads of EMBs, policymakers, and institutional leaders to deliberate on contemporary challenges to electoral integrity. Key focus areas include disinformation, digital disruption, electoral security, climate-related risks, and the role of Artificial Intelligence in elections.
As the world's largest democracy, India has maintained a longstanding partnership with International IDEA, contributing actively to global discourse through its institutional innovations and democratic experiences. Through various capacity building programmes and conferences, the India International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Management, IIIDEM is also emerging as a premier institute for electoral management excellence.
The statement mentioned that CEC Gyanesh Kumar is leading a delegation comprising senior officials from ECI, including the Director General of IIIDEM, Rakesh Verma, Vijay Kumar Pandey, DDG (Law) and Rahul Sharma, Principal Secretary. (ANI)

The meeting was part of his two-day visit to Switzerland and came during his official tour to Switzerland and Sweden from June 9 to 13, 2025. In a social media post on Tuesday, the minister shared, 'Spent an engaging evening with Indian business delegates. Held insightful conversations on exciting opportunities, partnerships, and new avenues for trade & investment between India & Switzerland, emerging from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.' The India-EFTA (European Free Trade Association) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which was recently signed, has opened new doors for enhanced cooperation between India and EFTA member countries, including Switzerland. Goyal's discussions with the business delegates focused on how to best leverage the agreement to boost economic ties. Earlier on Monday, the minister began his Switzerland visit with a lunch interaction with CEOs of select Swiss companies and prospective investors who are exploring investment possibilities in India. The meeting provided a platform for the business leaders to share their plans and learn more about India's investment environment. In another social media post, the minister also talked about his visit to the Swiss Parliament, where he met with Swiss Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin. Sharing the experience, Goyal said, 'Had a wonderful experience today visiting the Swiss Parliament and meeting my friend @ParmelinG, Swiss Federal Councillor. Had the opportunity to view some precious lithograph paintings, titled Cortege, made by the renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier during his stay in Chandigarh in 1960. Truly a proud moment and a reflection of the longstanding artistic and cultural ties between India and Switzerland.' In addition to these meetings, Goyal also held a series of sectoral interactions with CEOs of several Swiss pharmaceutical and life sciences companies. These companies are considering making investments in India and strengthening their presence in the Indian market. Bern [Switzerland], June 10 (ANI): Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described China's rare earth export restrictions as a global 'wake-up call' on Monday, emphasising that India is actively building alternative supply chains while positioning itself as a trusted partner for international businesses seeking to reduce their dependence on Chinese suppliers. Speaking to reporters during his official visit to Switzerland, where he metwith Swiss government officials and business leaders, Goyal acknowledged that China's export curbs will create short-term challenges for India's automotive and white goods sectors. However, he expressed confidence that collaborative efforts between government, industry, and innovators will transform these challenges into long-term opportunities. The minister outlined a comprehensive strategy to address the crisis, including diplomatic engagement through the Indian embassy's ongoing dialogue with Chinese authorities and the commerce ministry's efforts to identify alternative supply sources. The government is also strengthening Indian Rare Earths Limited by providing necessary resources to accelerate domestic production capabilities. 'This situation serves as a wake-up call for all those who have become over-reliant on certain geographies,' Goyal emphasised. 'It's a wake-up call for the whole world that you need trusted partners in your supply chain.' The automotive industry has specifically requested government assistance in expediting approval processes for importing rare earth magnets from China, which are essential components in passenger vehicles and various automotive applications. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. The new Chinese restrictions, effective from April 4, require special export licenses for seven specific rare earth elements and their related magnetic products. 'There are clearly issues around the suspension of permanent magnet supplies from China to India, which will particularly affect our auto sector and several white goods manufacturers,' Goyal explained. 'Some companies have submitted their applications, and we hope that pragmatic considerations will prevail and they will receive the necessary approvals.' When questioned about potential government intervention through production-linked incentive schemes, Goyal reported encouraging discussions with automotive manufacturers. The companies have expressed strong confidence in their ability to address these supply chain challenges through partnerships with domestic innovators and startups. 'They are actively engaging with our innovators and startups, indicating they will provide any necessary funding or pricing adjustments to encourage faster rollout and growth of this sector,' the minister noted. He praised the evolving mindset within Indian industry, observing that companies are moving beyond traditional dependence on government subsidies. 'More and more Indian industry is coming out of the old mindset that government subsidies and support alone will run our operations. They are becoming bigger and bolder in their approach.' Goyal highlighted ongoing technological developments that could provide alternative solutions to Chinese rare earth dependencies. 'There are some technologies that India is developing,' he noted, emphasising the collaborative approach involving government, industry, startups, and innovators. 'We are all working as a team and remain confident that while there may be challenges in the short run, we will emerge as winners in the medium to long term,' he stated. The minister viewed the current disruption as presenting strategic opportunities for India's manufacturing ecosystem. He believes it will accelerate recognition of the importance of self-reliance and the value of establishing trustworthy supply chain partnerships. 'There is an opportunity even in this crisis and challenge,' Goyal observed. 'More and more companies, businesses, and people in India will recognise that it is important to be self-reliant and to have trusted partners in supply chains. Increasingly, the world today wants India to be part of their supply chain because we are seen as a trusted partner.' (ANI)
