Suhail Bhat's dream run: From watching on sidelines to playing for India and Mohun Bagan
He was part of MBSG's historic Indian Super League double-winning squad in the 2024-25 campaign. He also won the Durand Cup and the League Shield in his debut season with the club in the 2023-24 season.
Hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, Bhat started his career with Indian Arrows. Later, the forward joined the MBSG reserve squad, and his goalscoring potential caught the attention quickly, opening the doors to the first team.
'I used to play for the Arrows, and when we finished the AFC U-19, my agent called me and said, 'MBSG are interested in you.' I was like, 'Okay, I'm going there no matter how much money they're offering.' So, basically, right from the start, I felt in my heart that I wanted to join MBSG,' he said in an interview with MBSG TV, as quoted from the official website of ISL.
'After that, I came here and played for the reserve team. Back then, in the reserve team, we had a really good understanding among us, so because of that, I was able to score more goals. I scored goals in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) and in the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) as well. In my debut, I scored a hat-trick against Mohammedan (Sporting Club) SC--that was the best debut of my life. I scored that hat-trick. That's where my career started, and I never looked back and kept working harder and harder,' he added.
Bhat took pride in being part of MBSG's squad. When quizzed about his thoughts on the Mariners' journey throughout the 2024-25 season, he answered,
'It's amazing. When I look back, it feels incredible. It's like an unbelievable season,' he noted.
'I still can't believe it--we've won so many trophies. So, when I look back now, I get that experience of how we work together as a team and how we get back up when we lose. So, it is all about the feeling of winning the Shield and the Cup together--it still feels like a dream,' he further added.
Bhat showed glimpses of his talent in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025, where he scored two goals and was recently called up to the senior Indian national team. Under Manolo Marquez's guidance, he also made his debut for the Blue Tigers against Thailand in an international friendly.
The 20-year-old forward shared his joy at receiving his first-ever national team call-up and spoke about the experience of sharing the dressing room with the likes of Sunil Chhetri and other senior players.
'Since I started playing football, I was in the under-16s, then under-19s, then under-23s (for the) AFC qualifiers. Every time, my focus was only to get into the senior team and experience playing at that level and play for the country,' he said.
'It was like a dream when I got my first call-up from the senior team. I still can't believe it. I've been there alongside everyone, including Sunil Chhetri Bhai and all the senior players who have helped and supported me. They're always telling me to keep going, and it's an amazing feeling to be there,' he signed off. (ANI)

Odisha suspend all player, staff contracts
Kolkata: On a day that Khalid Jamil was announced the head coach of India men's national team, the uncertainty surrounding the Indian football's top-flight league hit hard with Odisha FC suspending all player and staff contracts from August 5. As speculation grew over the club's overall future, the India Super League (ISL) side's owner Rohan Sharma clarified things through his social media account later in the evening. "We haven't shut down the club despite the headlines. Key staff members are retained, our women's team will be operational. However, it becomes harder to justify to my stakeholders to sink Crs (crores) upon Crs with nothing to show for it, and no end in sight," club owner Rohan Sharma wrote on 'X'. "We have - No Clarity when the League will Start - Nowhere to practice/play/work in Odisha - No way to get sponsorship since there's no season - No way to engage investors with an expiring participation agreement. We hoped something would give, but sadly it hasn't," added Sharma. Hoping for a better resolution of the current situation, he wrote further, "We didn't go into this offseason planning to take this step. In fact we had made 5 signings until it became clear things are delayed. We desperately hope the above issues get resolved; maybe doing this will prompt people to fast-track solutions so we can get back to work." Earlier in the day, Delhi Soccer Private Limited (DSPL), the parent company of the Bhubaneswar-based side, issued a letter confirming the implementation of a 'Force Majeure' in the wake of an uncertain future of ISL. A letter signed by Ajit Panda, head of finance, DSPL, stated, "As you may be aware, the commencement of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season has been indefinitely suspended due to the inability of Football Sports Development Limited and the All India Football Federation to reach an agreement on the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement." "This unfortunate development has placed Odisha FC in an extremely challenging position, arising from circumstances that are entirely beyond the Club's control and unforeseeable in nature — akin to a force majeure event," the letter added. "After careful and thorough consideration, and in alignment with the evolving situation, the Club has arrived at a difficult decision and is proposing to place your engagement with the Club under suspension with effect from 5th August, 2025. Please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly and is being made on a bona fide basis, in the best interest of the Club and its stakeholders," the club added in the letter. Odisha FC also stated that they would not restrict any player willing to explore other professional opportunities which could be available during this time and would facilitate any mutual termination of contract if it is a preferred solution.

Kolkata: Days after being part of joint initiative seeking a meeting with All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey regarding the uncertainty of the Indian Super League (ISL) season, Odisha FC suspended contracts of players and staff with effect from Tuesday. (Adimazes) The 2023-24 Super Cup runners-up, who have skipped the ongoing Durand Cup, are the first ISL team to invoke the force majeure clause because the future of India's top tier football competition is unknown. The letter sent to players and staff on Friday says that the start of 2025-26 ISL season has been 'indefinitely suspended' because AIFF's commercial partners are not keen till an agreement replacing the one that ends this December is signed. Following a Supreme Court observation in April that no major decision be taken at AIFF till its verdict on the federation's constitution is given, discussions on the master rights agreement have been put on hold. 'The unfortunate development has placed Odisha FC in an extremely challenging position, arising from circumstances that are entirely beyond the Club's control… After careful and thorough consideration, and in alignment with the evolving situation, the Club has arrived at a difficult decision' to place contracts 'under suspension with effect from 5th August, 2025.' The letter signed by Ajit Panda of Delhi Soccer Private Limited, Odisha FC's parent company, says players and staff are free to pursue 'other professional opportunities that may be available to you.' Recently, Sharma also said the club did not know if they could host matches at Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Stadium because they have not heard from the state sports association. 'We are done with this government in Odisha. Poorly run compared to the previous admin,' he said on X. Odisha FC remain part of the group of eight ISL clubs who have written to AIFF seeking a meeting with Chaubey where they can, hopefully, contribute to trying to end this impasse. Football: On Jamil rests India's Asian Cup hopes
Kolkata: Hours after being named India coach, Khalid Jamil took a training session with Jamshedpur FC. It could be the last one Jamil takes at the Indian Super League (ISL) club he joined on December 31, 2023. Between then and Friday, Jamil had overseen Jamshedpur FC being docked three points for fielding an extra foreigner and making the ISL semi-final and the Super Cup final. (Sportzpics for ISL) It was the last two in 2024-25 that got Jamil's former coach and teammates to support him as the first Indian in charge of the national team since Savio Medeira in 2012. The post opened when Spaniard Manolo Marquez stepped down as head coach after 11 months. IM Vijayan, who chairs the technical committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), backed his former India teammate, who was voted AIFF coach of the year twice in succession, as did Bimal Ghosh under whom Jamil had blossomed into a versatile midfielder. At the virtual AIFF executive committee meeting on Friday, they also got support from Armando Colaco and Shabbir Ali, the former India captain who is also a technical committee and executive committee member. According to those who attended the meeting, Ghosh proposed only Jamil's name and Colaco said he would be the first choice followed by Stephen Constantine. Decorated former coaches both, Colaco and Ghosh are advisors to AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey. Members also spoke of Jamil's lack of international experience and in managing a squad that has the best Indian players but Colaco and Ali, as per the AIFF media release, said he needed to be given a chance. There was support for Constantine as well with one member pointing out how he had ensured a smooth transition from Sukhwinder Singh in 2002 and another AIFF official saying since the new coach will not have time to settle down, the Anglo-Cypriot was his choice. Stefan Tarkovic, the other coach in the three-man shortlist, was barely discussed. Chaubey told PTI that Jamil has asked for a three-year term. An executive committee member suggested that the new coach be given a one-year contract, in line with the term remaining for the members, with a scope for extension, according to an official in the meeting. 'It will be a long-term tenure, may be two or three years, and performance-based,' Chaubey has said. 'The details will be firmed up by AIFF in consultation with Jamil,' said a federation official. Also awaiting details are Jamil's current employers. Jamshedpur FC play 1 Ladakh in Durand Cup on August 8 and the quarter-final on August 16 or 17. But should Jamil want to start preparation for the CAFA Nations Cup, where India start on August 29 against Tajikistan, he may have to be released earlier, or Jamshedpur may request AIFF to let him manage club and country in the short term. As per AIFF officials in the meeting, Jamil has asked for a support staff of six most of whom could be from Jamshedpur FC. Jamil's salary will be around ₹1.2 crore annually, according to an official who was in the meeting. Constantine and Tarkovic had sought $240,000 ( ₹20.9 crore approximately) after tax annually, the official said. Since they are not allowed to speak to the media on this, the officials mentioned in this report have requested anonymity. A football obsessive known for his ability to revive players' careers and get clubs to punch above their weight, Jamil's biggest challenge will be to ensure that India, who have slipped to 133 in the FIFA rankings, qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup. A first-ever hattrick of successful qualifying campaigns is, in the words of India's talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri, the bare minimum. At the bottom of the four-team group after a draw and a defeat, India will play Singapore next home and away in October. Jamil's teams are known for defensive solidity but have sometimes cracked in trying to take the game to the opponents. Six of Jamshedpur's 10 defeats in 2024-25 ISL came against teams that finished below them. India are the highest-ranked team in group C of the Asian Cup qualifiers and that could mean Jamil having to work out a way against tactics he is famous for deploying.
