Punjab: Anil Joshi back in SAD after 7 months
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday received a shot in the arm with former cabinet minister Anil Joshi making a comeback into the party as well as joining its campaign for the Ludhiana West assembly by-election. Joshi had left SAD in November 2024 while alleging that the party was entangled only in religious and 'panthic' agenda, and had 'forgot' the real issues of Punjab.
Welcoming Joshi, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said, 'We have a bond spanning two decades. It gives me immense happiness that Joshi has decided to rejoin the SAD in the interest of Punjab and Punjabiat. We all feel there is a need to bring back the era of peace and communal harmony and will strive for the same.'
Joshi said, 'It is the need of the hour to strengthen the regional party which alone understands and makes its programmes and policies as per the aspirations of Punjabis.' He said the SAD had always safeguarded the interests of Punjabis. He also spoke on the 'development and pro-poor policies' of the erstwhile Parkash Singh Badal-led government as well as 'rapid infrastructure build-up', including expressways and the international airport by Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Later, Badal also inducted former jathedar Harbhajan Singh Dang's brother Gurdeep Singh Rana Dang into the party. Rana Dang had contested the last municipal elections as an independent candidate.

NCERT to provide two new books on Babu Jagat Singh
Varanasi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training will make available two books titled, 'Babu Jagat Singh, the Forgotten Leader of Banaras' and '1799, the Role of Babu Jagat Singh in the Untold Story of the Indian Freedom Struggle and the Discovery of Sarnath', in its library. They will be sent to the textbook production committee of the council and available evidence will be incorporated in the books. In his letter to former BJP president, Murli Manohar Joshi, NCERT director, Dinesh Prasad Saklani, said both books would be available in NCERT libraries to raise awareness about Indian freedom struggle and truth of the discovery of Sarnath. Joshi wrote a letter to NCERT director, noting that Sarnath stone slab was revised according to research by the department of archaeology and conservation, Heritage Bhawan, New Delhi. He emphasised that this was important information that must be imparted to Indian students. Joshi also mentioned that this served as certified evidence of how Indian history was distorted during British rule and it would inspire students to explore history from Indian perspective. Patron of Jagat Singh Royal Family Project, Pradeep Narayan Singh, praised the steps taken by NCERT to reveal the untold truth of Indian freedom struggle. The ASI corrected erroneous data related to Babu Jagat Singh inscribed by British authorities on the plaque at the Dharmarajika Stupa in Sarnath and installed a new plaque.

Ludhiana: Senior leader Manoranjan Kalia on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on the (AAP), accusing it of betraying its 2022 poll promises and advancing the political ambitions of Delhi Chief Minister at Punjab's expense. "Kejriwal had promised ₹54,000 crore without burdening the public—₹20,000 crore from sand mining and ₹34,000 crore by eliminating corruption. None of that materialised," Kalia said. Kalia also questioned the motives behind AAP nominating sitting Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora as its candidate for the upcoming Ludhiana West bypoll, alleging a larger scheme to vacate a seat for Kejriwal himself. "The public must ask why a Rajya Sabha member is contesting an Assembly seat. Is it to make way for Kejriwal in the upper house?" he asked. Further sharpening his critique, Kalia accused the AAP government of sidelining local talent by appointing "outsiders" to key posts. He cited the appointments of Reena Gupta as chairperson of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, Deepak Chauhan to the Large Scale Industries Board, Prabhvir Brar to Punsup, and Shalin Mitra as OSD to the health minister. "This sends a dangerous message—that Punjabis are not capable of handling their own state's institutions," he said. Majithia said: "He should also tell Punjabis why his govt took three-years-and-a-half to make a new industrial policy and why he was unable to protect industrialists from extortions and targeted killings." Majithia also appealed to Punjabis and estranged Akali leaders to support the SAD to strengthen what he termed "Panthic unity".
