Former Bellefontaine sergeant in court on OVI, firearm charges
Bellefontaine Police Sgt. Bradley Staley faces charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a felony of the fifth degree, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence (OVI), a misdemeanor of the first degree.
Staley appeared before Judge Kevin P. Braig in the Logan County Court of Common Pleas.
The judge granted Staley recognizance bond, ordered him to keep in contact with lawyer Madison Mackay and submit to pre-trial drug/alcohol testing.
Staley pleaded not guilty to the charges. He moved the court for admission to the intervention instead of the conviction program.
He was ordered by the court to appear for a pre-sentence investigation interview. A hearing is scheduled on the motion and to accept a change of plea on the OVI charge for July 11 at 2 p.m.

Sobriety checkpoints this weekend in NE Ohio
[Editor's Note: This story has been updated to include new location details.] SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – The Stark County Sheriff's Office has announced plans to conduct sobriety checkpoints on Saturday, July 26, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce impaired driving. According to a press release, the Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with other members of the Stark County OVI Task Force, will hold two sobriety checkpoints in Sugarcreek Township. The other checkpoint will be held from 10 p.m. until midnight at OH-93 (WabashAvenue N) and Glick Street NW in Brewster. Southwest flight takes plunge to avoid aircraft 'Officers will conduct a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment and will be vigilant in detecting and apprehending impaired drivers,' read the release. 'Remember: Impaired driving is never acceptable. If consuming alcohol or drugs, make the responsible choice to plan ahead for a safe, sober ride home.' On Friday, officials in Summit County also announced checkpoints at 'various locations' across the county, which started Friday evening and continued into the early morning hours of Saturday. In 1990, the Supreme Court upheld the use of sobriety checkpoints as long as they meet certain guidelines, which includes public notification. How to stay safe at Ohio state parks this summer
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — ODNR wants people to get outside this summer to enjoy a nice hike in the woods, a swim in the lake, or go boating on the open water, but they want you to do so safely. 2 NEWS spoke with an officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to learn more about how to stay safe while enjoying the summer weather. One of the easiest ways to protect yourself if you are on the water is by wearing a life jacket. ODNR officer Garrett Heasley says just a few months ago, they added 32 life jacket loaner stations around the state.'It's a safety thing. Life jackets are going to help you float,' said Heasley. 'You know, you might have a sudden medical condition, an injury, something like that, where you're not able to swim. So having a life jacket on will keep you afloat and keep you safe until you can get rescued.'Before you head to the water or the woods, let a friend or family member know where you will be hiking or swimming, and when you expect to return from the park. Heasley says if something were to go wrong, this helps locate you faster. 'Search parties or rescue personnel can assist and better make it to you in a more timely manner,' said Heasley. Bring enough water, and be sure to leave the alcohol at home, as consumption is not allowed in the parks, especially when boating. Heasley says operating any vehicle under the influence is illegal. 'Operating under the influence of alcohol in Ohio is illegal. There's no open containers allowed of alcohol on our state park waters,' said Heasley. 'There's very stiff penalties for operating under the influence of alcohol.'ODNR recommends you check out park maps to find out where the no wake zones are located, which are in place to protect beachgoers and the shoreline. Driver charged after hitting bicycle carrying 3 juveniles
SANDUSKY, Ohio (WJW) — A driver is facing charges after a vehicle hit a bicycle early Saturday morning in Perkins Township, seriously injuring two juveniles. Suspect in Euclid Beach Park shooting still at-large According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Sandusky Post, Joseph Fox, 34, was driving south on Campbell St. around 2:40 a.m. on July 5. Meanwhile, three juveniles were riding a 'three wheeled bicycle' heading the same direction as Fox, a news release from OSHP said. 'Mr. Fox struck the juveniles from behind, ejecting two of them from the bicycle. The third juvenile was able to jump from the bicycle before being struck,' according to OSHP. A red light on the back of the bicycle was active at the time of the crash, troopers said. Fox left the scene but was located a short time later in parking lot where he was taken into custody. Guardians fall to Tigers in 8th straight loss According to OSHP, the two juveniles on the bike suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. The juvenile who jumped from the bicycle was not hurt. Fox has been charged with failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead (ACDA), Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol and or Drugs (OVI), Felony Hit Skip and Felony Aggravated Vehicular Assault.
