Databricks Agrees to Acquire Neon to Deliver Serverless Postgres for Developers + AI Agents
SAN FRANCISCO, May 14, 2025 /CNW/ -- Databricks, the Data and AI company, today announced its intent to acquire Neon, a leading serverless Postgres company. As the $100-billion-plus database market braces for unprecedented disruption driven by AI, Databricks plans to continue innovating and investing in Neon's database and developer experience for existing and new Neon customers and partners.
Neon: An Open, Serverless Foundation for Developers and AI Agents
AI agents are becoming increasingly integral components for modern developers, and Neon is purpose-built to support their agentic workflows. Recent internal telemetry showed that over 80 percent of the databases provisioned on Neon were created automatically by AI agents rather than by humans, underscoring how explosively agentic workloads are growing. These workloads differ from human-driven patterns in three important ways:
Speed + flexibility: Agents operate at machine speed and traditional database provisioning often becomes a bottleneck — Neon can spin up a fully isolated Postgres instance in 500 milliseconds or less and supports instant branching and forking of not only database schema but also data, so experiments never disturb production.
Cost proportionality: Agents demand a cost structure that scales precisely with usage — Neon's full separation of compute and storage keeps the total cost of ownership for thousands of ephemeral databases proportional to the queries they actually run.
Open source ecosystem: Agents expect to leverage the rich Postgres community — Neon is 100 percent Postgres-compatible and works out of the box with popular extensions.
" The era of AI-native, agent-driven applications is reshaping what a database must do," said Ali Ghodsi, Co-Founder and CEO at Databricks. "Neon proves it: four out of every five databases on their platform are spun up by code, not humans. By bringing Neon into Databricks, we're giving developers a serverless Postgres that can keep up with agentic speed, pay-as-you-go economics and the openness of the Postgres community."
Databricks and Neon's Shared Vision
Together, Databricks and Neon will work to remove the traditional limitations of databases that require compute and storage to scale in tandem — an inefficiency that hinders AI workloads. The integration of Neon's serverless Postgres architecture with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform will help developers and enterprise teams efficiently build and deploy AI agent systems. This approach not only prevents performance bottlenecks from thousands of concurrent agents but also simplifies infrastructure, reduces costs and accelerates innovation — all with Databricks' security, governance and scalability at the core.
"Four years ago, we set out to build the best Postgres for the cloud that was serverless, highly scalable, and open to everyone. With this acquisition, we plan to accelerate that mission with the support and resources of an AI giant," said Nikita Shamgunov, CEO of Neon. "Databricks was founded by open source pioneers committed to making it easier for developers to work with data and AI at any scale. Together, we are starting a new chapter on an even more ambitious journey."
Neon's talented team is expected to join Databricks after the transaction closes, and the team brings deep expertise and continuity for Neon's vibrant community. Together, Neon and Databricks will empower organizations to eliminate data silos, simplify architecture and build AI agents that are more responsive, reliable and secure.
We plan to share more at Data + AI Summit in San Francisco, taking place June 9–12.
Details Regarding the Proposed Acquisition
The proposed acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including any required regulatory clearances.

Top Analysts Stay Bullish on Broadcom Stock (AVGO) Despite Post-Q2 Earnings Decline
Semiconductor company Broadcom (AVGO) reported a modest earnings beat for the second quarter of Fiscal 2025, driven by artificial intelligence (AI)-led demand for its offerings. However, AVGO stock was down more than 4% in Friday's pre-market trading (as of writing), as investors seemed to have lofty expectations from the maker of application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICs. Confident Investing Starts Here: Analysts React to Broadcom's Q2 FY25 Earnings Following the Q2 print, Baird analyst Tristan Gerra highlighted Broadcom's continued strong execution and solid fundamentals. While the 4-star analyst acknowledges that Broadcom is well-positioned to remain the leader in custom AI ASIC solutions, he argues that GPUs (graphics processing units) will continue to play a primary role, including in AI inferencing. He added that Broadcom's AI XPU revenue in 2026 could be mainly driven by new customers, while the Tomahawk 6 offering is expected to drive robust AI networking top-line growth in the first half of FY26. Gerra reaffirmed a Buy rating on AVGO stock but maintained the price target at $210, noting that the stock's valuation is rich, mainly compared to Nvidia (NVDA). He believes that Broadcom stock is trading at an elevated valuation, given his expectation of a 'potential 1H26 slowdown in XPU QoQ revenue comps before new customer ramps take place.' Meanwhile, Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh reiterated a Buy rating on Broadcom stock and increased the price target to $310 from $300, noting the company's industry-leading FY25 gross margin and operating margin estimates at about 79% and 65%, respectively, and expectation of free cash flow (FCF)/year growing to about $31 billion. The 5-star analyst pointed out the accelerating AI inference demand and projects Broadcom's AI revenue to grow to about $19 billion in FY25 and nearly $32 billion in FY26. Likewise, Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore boosted the price target for Broadcom stock to $270 from $205 and reiterated a Buy rating. The 5-star analyst noted that the company's results and guidance were essentially in line with expectations, with the AI business delivering upside, the software business remaining steady, and the non-AI semiconductor business witnessing a slower recovery. Seymore contends that while the dearth of a cyclical recovery in the non-AI business could continue to be a headwind into Q4 FY25, he expects investors to 'more eagerly focus' on the rise in Broadcom's AI business. Is AVGO Stock a Buy, Hold, or Sell? Wall Street has a Strong Buy consensus rating on Broadcom stock based on 27 Buys and two Holds. The average AVGO stock price target of $260.39 indicates that the stock is fully valued at current levels. These ratings and price targets could see further revisions, as more analysts are expected to react to Broadcom's results and outlook. This AI ETF Could Turn $10,000 Into $40,000 by 2035
There's no denying it -- artificial intelligence (AI) is likely going to have a profound impact on the world over the long term. Entire industries could be altered. It's no wonder management teams are increasingly focused on ways to better position themselves for long-term success. From an investment perspective, perhaps it's starting to make sense that your portfolio should have some exposure to AI. Luckily, investors don't necessarily need to pick individual stocks if they want to benefit from the trend. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » There's one top AI exchange-traded fund (ETF) that could turn $10,000 into $40,000 by 2035. Continue reading to learn more about how to supercharge your portfolio for future success. Looking at the past and future In the last 10 years, the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ: QQQ) has generated a total return of 414% (as of June 3). This means that a $10,000 investment made in June 2015 would be worth $51,400 today. I don't think anyone in their right mind would complain with that kind of fantastic result. Even better, the expense ratio of 0.20% is a minimal cost to bear for that type of gain. There's no guarantee that past returns will repeat themselves going forward. Let's assume that there is a slowdown. Even so, I wouldn't be surprised if investors who put the same $10,000 in this ETF today see a fourfold gain in the next decade, resulting in a 15% annualized return. There's a lot of talk about how the stock market's current valuation is expensive. But consider that this has been the general narrative for a very long time. Yet that hasn't prevented equity markets from marching higher. The rise of passive investing, ongoing economic expansion, and dominance of tech-driven enterprises have all played a part. I'm fairly confident these trends will continue. Diversified exposure to artificial intelligence The Invesco QQQ Trust can be considered a top AI ETF, even though it contains 100 stocks in total. There is heavy concentration among the top positions, many of which have a meaningful AI focus. The so-called hyperscalers, most notably Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet, combined represent 18.9% of the Invesco QQQ Trust's asset base. These dominant companies have leading cloud computing platforms that offer a range of AI tools to their customers. They're collectively planning to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on capital expenditures in 2025 in an effort to bolster their technical infrastructure to better position themselves for an AI future. We can't forget about Nvidia, the biggest beneficiary thus far of the AI boom. It provides the graphics-processing units that power AI data centers, posting unbelievable revenue and profit growth. It's the second-largest holding in the Invesco QQQ Trust. Other top positions are Apple, Meta Platforms, Netflix, and Tesla. There's no doubt that AI has and will keep impacting these businesses in some way as well. Play the long game Investing correctly means having patience. While the AI craze has definitely made some investors rich in a short period of time, that's the wrong mindset to have. When buying the Invesco QQQ Trust, it's critical to keep the attention on the next decade and beyond. AI has the ability to revolutionize many parts of our economy, and this will all take time to play out. As of this writing, the Invesco QQQ Trust trades 2% off its peak. It might be tempting to wait for a bigger pullback to put money to work. However, I believe this is a flawed approach. It's a smart idea to invest early and often, letting compounding work its magic. Investing in this top AI ETF could work wonders for your portfolio between now and 2035. Should you invest $1,000 in Invesco QQQ Trust right now?
