MIC confirms talks with Perikatan as party weighs its future, president says its direction not decided by grudges
MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran said its leadership is reviewing its trajectory after motions from grassroots members in Kedah and Penang urged support for PN, Harian Metro reported yesterday.
'Yes, we acknowledge having informal discussions with PN regarding MIC's direction. MIC has nothing to hide (about discussions with PN), this is not a secret affair. MIC (leadership) will decide our own direction, but we hold no grudges against anyone,' Vigneswaran was quoted as saying in a press conference after the 79th Johor MIC delegates convention here.
He highlighted that Malaysia's changing political landscape requires MIC to carefully plan its path to remain relevant.
Last week, MIC leaders in Kedah, Penang, and Perak were reported to have approved motions to cooperate with PN, while not ruling out leaving BN.
Vigneswaran said any decision will prioritise the Indian community and the party's future.
'Everyone must understand – the country's political dynamics have changed. If MIC refuses to accept this reality, we will disappear,' he was quoted as saying.
'MIC accepts that we are called weak, but it is strange that many still want to discuss this party – that is what we don't understand. Many analyses are made about MIC, many things are said, but we don't believe them. MIC only trusts our grassroots,' he added.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): It is now essentially confirmed that Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya will contest under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) banner in the upcoming state elections. 'What's so difficult about it? He is both an assemblyman and Member of Parliament. Tatap menang punya (win for sure),' Hajiji said cheerfully. When asked whether Shahelmey would contest under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket, Hajiji, who is also Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) president, replied: ''Dia ikut' (he will follow) 'siurang' (us in Sabahan slang).' Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin maintains Shahelmey remains part of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) and has repeatedly stated Umno will not renominate him. Meanwhile, Hajiji emphasised the state government's continued commitment to safeguarding the interests of youths in Sabah, noting that youth development is one of the pillars of the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda. 'Youths are not merely beneficiaries, but also agents of change. Hajiji said that between 2021 and 2025, a total of 14 new youth-focused initiatives have been introduced with allocations of RM164.14 million, benefitting over 210,000 students. DPM Fadillah urges calm, says early investigation lapses in Zara Qairina case addressed
KUCHING, Aug 17 — The negligence in the initial investigation over Zara Qairina Mahathir's case in Sabah has been addressed, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has assured. According to him, the process after this is further investigation on whether or not any individuals will be charged. 'As Malaysians, let's just leave the matter to the police, and legal action will be taken accordingly. 'Let's not resort to creating negative sentiments that can destroy the peace of our country,' he said when met by reporters after attending a function at Jalan Sultan Tengah here yesterday. Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near here school hostel at around 4am. Adding on, Fadillah expressed hope that everyone would continue to show respect for the nation's judiciary system, policing system and the integrity of the health system. 'This is not the time for people to politicise this issue — an act that may jeopardise the prevailing harmony. 'Allow time for the authorities to investigate transparently until a decision is made. 'If there is indeed an injustice involved, we will see to it that a fairer and more transparent action be taken. 'Right now, let this matter take its course since investigations are underway,' he said. The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), on August 8, announced that the girl's body would be exhumed to allow post-mortem to be conducted, stating that further investigations by the police were necessary to ensure that all aspects of the case would be thoroughly examined. — The Borneo Post
