Gardening expert says these best pollinating plants will make your garden a sanctuary for bees

Daily Mirror06-06-2025
Transform your garden into a sanctuary for bees and butterflies this summer as a gardening expert reveals the best pollinating plants to add to your flower beds
Spring is in full bloom and making way for the warm summer months to come. Following the iconic Chelsea Flower Show, many of us are planning and preparing our summer gardens, filling our lawns with beautiful bouquets that add vibrant colours to our gardens through the sunnier seasons. And it is of vital importance to consider the pollinators that you can attract with your plants. These creatures are crucial for the survival of ecosystems and food production, so it's important to do all we can to support them.
Pollination is vital for plant reproduction, biodiversity, and food production, and creating a productive environment for important insects like bees and butterflies is important for the surrounding wildlife. By planting these flowers in your garden, you will aid the health of ecosystems and human survival, as well as surround yourself with an array of beautiful colours and fragrances.
Gardening expert Fiona Jenkins at MyJobQuote.co.uk has listed the very best pollinating plants to add to your garden and make it a sanctuary for bees, butterflies, and more, and we know where you can shop for the top pollinating plants without breaking the bank.
Aster
Asters are beloved plants, famed for their late-season bursts of colour that they add to any garden. These daisy-like perennials, with their star-shaped flower heads, come in hues ranging from white to blue to purple and look stunning in any mixed flower bed or as a standalone display. They are perfect for creating a charming cottage vibe.
Asters bloom until the frost arrives, often hailed as the top flower for drawing in a variety of pollinating insects. Bees are particularly drawn to aster when they're in full bloom, and the flowers serve as an excellent source of nectar during late summer and early autumn, a time when most other plants have finished their yearly bloom.
You can shop the long-lasting purple flowers from Gardening Express for £8.95 or take a peek at this Aster dumosus Lady in Blue on Amazon for £14.95.

Foxgloves
Foxglove is a favourite among UK gardeners. It boasts a striking spike of purple-pink blossoms from summer to early autumn and can reach heights of up to 2 metres. These beauties are typically spotted on heathland and woodland fringes, adding a splash of colour to any summer garden.
Blooming from late spring to summer, foxgloves can be effortlessly cultivated from seed. Once established, they'll self-seed in the shadier corners of your garden, guaranteeing a constant source of pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinators during the early summer months.
Check out these Digitalis Pink Panther Foxgloves for £12.99 at Gardening Express, or pick up these Foxglove 'Panther' at Thomas & Morgan for £29.99.
Dahlia
Dahlia 'Stardust' is a stunning small-flowered decorative variety. Its soft pale pink petals are beautifully bordered with vibrant magenta-pink. Blooming consistently from midsummer to the first frost, 'Stardust' adds a sparkling touch to any planting scheme.
Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil, and remove spent flowers to encourage more growth. The dahlia is ideal for creating a stunning garden border and is also popular as cut flowers.
Dahlias are a major attraction for bees due to their characteristic flowers, which have a long spike of petals that resemble honeycombs. As bees travel from bloom to bloom, they gather valuable pollen and nectar, making dahlias a significant part of their diet.
The Dahlia 'Stardust' retails for £1.97, down from £5.97, at Gardening Express. Or, head over to You Garden where you can find this Dahlia 'Starburst Pink' Plugs for £14.99.
Other top pollinating plants that you can add to your garden to elevate its aesthetic while also benefiting the ecosystem include poppies, lavender, crocus, primroses and marigolds.

My spending was out of control until I made easy change everyone can do – it helped me pay off £9k debt on £9k salary

DEBT CHANGE My spending was out of control until I made easy change everyone can do – it helped me pay off £9k debt on £9k salary Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) OPENING her credit card statements Jo Beevers feels sick. She knew she had a problem with impulsive spending but she had never faced up to it, until now. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Jo Beevers, 46, got her spending under control with an easy trick anyone can do The 46-year-old, who lives near Chester, had always been in debt and was stuck in a constant cycle of doing 0% balance transfers. But going from a full-time job as an medical conditions and injury rehabilitation manager in a gym earning £30,000 to a working as a registrar 16 hours a week earning £9,000, Jo had no option but to stop hiding from it all and gain control. Jo said: 'I had £9,099.82 of credit card and overdraft debt and when I looked at where that money had been going, I felt ashamed. 'My spending was reckless because the money didn't feel real and I treated shopping like a hobby even though I was skint.' In 2018 Jo's "you only live once" outlook on money saw her buy a Volkswagen Up! for £9,000 while her husband, who works in IT, was away. And after a boozy lunch popped into Boots and spent £300 on perfumes she didn't need. Amazon parcels turned up every day and she even had a monthly delivery of two bottles of champagne from its Subscribe and Save service. Jo said: "It was ridiculous. If I had to hand over £80 in cash for two bottles of champagne every month I wouldn't have done it. 'But because it all went on the credit card, I didn't think about it. I knew I was bad but I could always justify my spending." Done with feeling guilty, stressed and worried about her mounting debt Jo stuffed her credit cards in a drawer and was ruthless in cancelling everything that was non-essential. I racked up £15k debt - here's how I paid it off as a single mum Then, she made one major change, at the beginning of every month she physically took out the remaining money after bills and groceries. Jo created a tracker and, in the beginning, divided the cash into different envelopes but it wasn't as easy as she thought and became overwhelmed. Jo said: 'I made loads of mistakes in the first three months by thinking the money could go further than it did. 'I created too many envelopes and the money couldn't stretch as far as I wanted it to.' Giving up temporarily, Jo worked through the overwhelm of emotions and prioritised where her money should be going and got herself back on track. She said: "Holding the money changed how I thought about it, it made it feel real. 'I had sections for debt, achievable savings goals and for non-essential spending. "Once I'd figured it out it was easy. It's so visual, it works for my mind.' Determined to pay off her debt and to keep on track, Jo created fun trackers to gamify her savings and to keep her motivated. She shared her journey on social media as @Cashbudgetbee and her trackers caught the eye of her followers. Stumbling on another way of topping up her part-time income, Jo began selling them on Etsy which has made £2,000 in the last 12 months. Jo said: 'I never thought it possible to find a way of making some extra money from my own debt clearing journey. 'But it made me feel normal to know that there were other people out there just like me.' Staying motivated was hard that's why she made the videos to share with her followers. When Jo hit a milestone, she popped into M&S and bought some champagne to treat herself, but a £22 one instead of a £40 bottle. But it can be a slippery slope, and the entrepreneurial mum, had to reign herself in. She said: 'It starts with one thing and then you're going back into old habits. And you go, 'Oh no I'm not debt free yet.'' Eighteen months on and Jo made her final payment on her credit card and if that wasn't enough, she also went into Christmas 2024 with money saved. She said: 'Being debt free is amazing, I'm the happiest I've ever been. Having money to spend at Christmas, rather than relying on credit cards was a great feeling.' But while she's riding high on clearing her debts, Jo doesn't feel like she can relax her new routine. She said: 'It really does worry me that I'll slip back as I've got 30 years-worth of spending habits to break. 'I've noticed some of my old shopping habits are sneaking back in. On Valentine's Day I didn't put anything in the budget as we hadn't planned anything. 'Then the day before I was online and putting all sorts in my basket, thankfully I was able to recognise what I was doing and stopped. All I can do is to keep trying.' Jo is giving herself new challenges to keep the momentum going and recently created an e-book sharing her own journey which she's already made £180 from.

'Comfortable' 4 seater garden set drops from £139 to £65 but sale ends soon

'Beautiful. Sturdy and comfortable than suitable for a smaller space.' Dunelm's huge clearance sale will soon be coming to an end, which has seen thousands of must-have products get their price tags slashed up to 50 per cent. Those who have had their eye on something will need to be fast as the event is set to finish at midnight on August 18. For shoppers looking to upgrade their garden furniture to provide comfortable seating for friends and family, Dunelm has a variety of popular sets available both in and out of the sale. However, for those wanting to save a bit of money, we have found the perfect set. The Dunelm 4 Seater Garden Dining Set usually retails for £139, but shoppers can now snatch it up for £69.50. This set comes with everything a household could need, including four chairs, a table and a parasol to stick in the middle so families can enjoy a meal without the sun's glare. Crafted to ensure full flexibility for your outdoor space, this garden dining set consists of metal furniture that will withstand various weather conditions, including the wind and rain. However, for times of the year when it is too cold and gloomy to be outside, Dunelm recommends using a cover to further protect the furniture so it can be used for many years to come. Along with its sturdy design, many shoppers have praised the chairs for being comfortable to sit in, which is a must for making the most of the warm, summer weather. Perfect for a warm coffee in the morning with a good book or dinner and drinks with loved ones, this dining set provides shoppers with more than enough space to entertain and ensure a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Alternatively, for those wanting to add a pop of colour to their homes, Argos has dropped the price of Habitat Cali 4 Seater Metal Patio Set in yellow. Normally retailing for £150, shoppers can now buy it for £100.50 in the clearance sale. This set includes a table, two single seats and a double sofa. For those looking for something smaller, Amazon has reduced the price of the URBNLIVING 3pc Outdoor Garden Furniture Set. Now £69.99 (RRP £89.99), this rattan set consists of two chairs with cushions for added comfort as well as a table. Back to Dunelm's four seater garden set, many shoppers have praised it for how comfortable and stylish its design is. However, there were mixed opinions on how easy the set is to assemble. One satisfied shopper said: "An excellent table chairs and parasol set. Found it very easy to erect and getting it at a discount price bonus. Staff where very helpful and Dunelm delivery were great can't say enough about the whole experience brilliant. Would give it more than five stars." While another five-star reviewer added: "Garden set absolutely beautiful looks lovely in the garden. It was easy to assemble." However, one shopper grumbled: "Lovely colour (grey). Putting the chairs together WILL test your patience and I have plenty patience for any flat pack!! OK for the sale price." While another customer commented: "Lovely patio set for the money. Hard to attach stretcher on the back of the chair without strong help is the only fault." As a few people noted about struggling to assemble the chairs, Dunelm has since added an instruction video to its website to help make the process easier. This can be found with the product images. On the flip side, a top reviewer praised: "Beautiful. Sturdy and comfortable than suitable for a smaller space." While a sixth customer said: "Very stylish, light and practical. Seats are comfortable for prolonged seating time. Easy wipe/dry. Excellent value for money." There isn't much time left to get the Dunelm 4 Seater Garden Dining Set for half price.
