Johor Amanah eyes incumbent BN state seats of Skudai, Kota Iskandar

The Star22-07-2025
JOHOR BARU: Parti Amanah Negara wants Pakatan Harapan to contest solo in the Skudai and Kota Iskandar state seats under the Iskandar Puteri parliamentary constituency.
This could mean a head-to-head battle between Pakatan and Barisan Nasional, which is the incumbent in Kota Iskandar.
Iskandar Puteri Amanah division chief Dzulkefly Ahmad said the decision for Pakatan to contest in both the state seats under the Iskandar Puteri parliamentary constituency came during the division's annual general meeting on Sunday (July 20).
'Amanah is prepared to face any possibilities, including three-cornered fights if necessary, by bringing the people's agenda of national unity, institutional reform and sustainable development.
'This decision was made in the spirit of reinforcing Pakatan and ensuring Johoreans continue to have the best choice when evaluating principled and capable candidates focused on the people's interest,' he said in a statement on Monday (July 21).
Dzulkefly, who is also Johor Amanah deputy chief, added that this reflected the party's commitment to strengthening Pakatan in key strategic areas to ensure continuity of progressive and inclusive governance for the rakyat.
He also said that any negotiations in view of the upcoming state election should consider grassroots strength and the past performance of candidates and parties in each constituency.
In the 2022 Johor election, Dzulkefly went up against a five-cornered fight with Barisan's Pandak Ahmad (Umno), Perikatan Nasional's Samsudin Ismail (Bersatu), Gerakan Tanah Air's Dr Zaini Abu Bakar (Pejuang) and Parti Sosialist Malaysia's R. Arangkannal.
Pandak won the seat with 23,133 votes while Dzulkefly received 18,773 votes.
Pakatan's Marina Ibrahim won the Skudai seat, a DAP stronghold, in a three-cornered fight against Barisan's Lim Soon Hai (MCA) and Perikatan's Khoo Kong Ek (Bersatu).

Dzulkefly's bid to recuse Apandi's daughter from libel suit dismissed

Dzulkefly Ahmad is suing former prime minister Najib Razak over claims the health minister had practised nepotism by securing the appointment of his daughter, Nurul Iman, to the board of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court has dismissed health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad's bid to recuse the judicial commissioner currently presiding over his RM5 million libel suit against former prime minister Najib Razak. Judicial Commissioner Arziah Apandi held that the plaintiff had not demonstrated a credible risk of bias arising either from her judicial remarks or her familial connections with former attorney-general Apandi Ali. Earlier, the plaintiff's lawyer Stanley Sabastien Sinnappen submitted that statements made by Arziah during case management on March 7 and April 7 – that the suit would be struck off if no settlement was reached and no notice of withdrawal filed – amounted to a real danger of bias. The parties had, in March, informed the court that they were working towards an amicable solution. Stanley further raised concerns that Arziah being the daughter of Apandi – appointed attorney-general in 2016 during Najib's administration – had created actual bias or reasonable apprehension of bias. Delivering her broad grounds of judgment, Arziah said the plaintiff's contention had no basis. She said the statements made during case management were standard directions aimed at preventing cases from remaining dormant, not expressions of partiality. 'Courts routinely make such directions to prevent cases from remaining dormant indefinitely,' she said. Addressing her relationship with Apandi, Arziah stressed that there was no evidence of any continuing relationship between her father and Najib beyond a brief court appearance as a witness in 2019. She said Apandi ceased to hold the office of attorney-general in 2018 and that any connection he had with the litigation was tenuous and historical. She also said familial relationships alone were insufficient to justify her recusal as it did not create a real danger of bias. 'Familial connections between members of the judiciary and legal professionals are common and do not automatically give rise to bias. 'Children of judges regularly appear before courts without raising concerns,' she said. Arziah dismissed the application with costs which will be decided at the end of the proceedings. Case management is set for Aug 13. Dzulkefly filed the suit in his private capacity on Dec 31, 2021, over Najib's claim that he had practised nepotism by securing the appointment of his daughter, Nurul Iman, to the board of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia two years earlier. In his statement of claim, the Kuala Selangor MP alleged that Najib's Facebook post on Aug 24, 2020, subsequently reported by a Malay daily, had defamed him.

Court dismisses Dzulkefly's bid to recuse judicial commissioner from Najib defamation suit

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — The High Court here today dismissed Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad's application to recuse Judicial Commissioner (JC) Arziah Mohamed Apandi from presiding over his defamation suit against former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, which concerns a Facebook post alleging cronyism. In delivering her decision, JC Arziah held that the plaintiff had failed to demonstrate any real danger of bias arising from her prior case management directions or from the fact that she is the daughter of former Attorney General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali. 'The relationship is between my father and the defendant (Najib), not between myself and any party. There is no evidence of any continuing relationship between my father and the defendant beyond a brief court appearance as a witness in 2019. 'My father ceased to hold office at the AGC in 2018, which is seven years ago. Any connection to this litigation is tenuous and historical,' she said. Arziah further stated that the court found no evidence of actual bias or circumstances that would lead a reasonable observer to conclude it exists. 'The application is accordingly dismissed,' she said. On April 14 this year, Dzulkefly filed an application to recuse Arziah, citing alleged bias stemming from remarks made by the JC during case management proceedings held on March 7 and April 7. He contended that those remarks, which touched on the possibility of striking out the matter, gave rise to actual bias or, at a minimum, a perception of bias. Dzulkefly further argued that JC Arziah's position as the daughter of former Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who was appointed to the post in 2016 by the defendant, Najib, also raised grounds for actual bias or a reasonable apprehension of bias. Counsel Stanley Sabastien Sinnappen appeared for Dzulkefly, while Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee represented Najib. Dzulkefly filed the defamation suit in his personal capacity in January 2022, alleging that Najib had published a defamatory Facebook post on Aug 24, 2020, relating to allegations of cronyism. The post was accompanied by a screenshot of a Sinar Harian article dated Jan 28, 2019, which featured the plaintiff's photograph. The plaintiff alleged that the impugned statement implied, among other things, that he engaged in cronyism by awarding positions or appointments to relatives without any objective assessment of their qualifications or suitability for roles in government or private entities. He further claimed that the defendant had published the statement with the intent to attack his character, degrade and humiliate him, and that the post was politically motivated with the express purpose of defaming him and tarnishing his reputation. In his statement of defence filed on March 29, 2022, Najib contended that the Facebook post in question, which touched on the issue of cronyism, did not refer to Dzulkefly personally but was directed at the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. — Bernama
