All Set for GVMC standing committee elections on August 6 in Visakhapatnam

The Hindu2 days ago
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has made elaborate arrangements for the standing committee elections, which are scheduled to be held on August 6 (Wednesday). With just hours remaining for polling, both the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the NDA alliance are holding last-minute strategy sessions to prevent cross-voting and secure a majority for their candidates.
GVMC Additional Commissioners D.V. Ramana Murthy and S.S. Varma on Tuesday conducted a sensitisation session for all party corporators at the GVMC Main Office, in the presence of floor leaders. The session focused on the election process for selecting the 10-member standing committee. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg has directed that the election be conducted transparently, with no scope for untoward incidents. Voting will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the GVMC Conference Hall. Corporators must present valid photo ID to obtain voter slips. Due to disruptions during previous elections, items such as pens, digital watches, mobile phones, and electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the polling area.
Each corporator is required to cast exactly 10 votes, and any ballot with more than 10 votes will be deemed invalid. Contesting candidates must report at 9:45 a.m. for sealing of ballot boxes and return at 2:05 p.m. for the final sealing. Counting will be conducted in the candidates' presence, followed by the announcement of results.
The run-up to the election saw political turbulence. CPI(M) Corporator B. Ganga Rao (Ward 78) declared he would boycott the election, accusing both YSRCP and NDA of fostering corruption. Jana Sena Party (JSP) Corporator P.L.V.N. Murthy (Ward 22) also announced a boycott, alleging that the TDP had failed to honour the NDA's seat-sharing arrangement, which reportedly allocated six seats to the TDP, three to the JSP, and one to the BJP. No JSP candidates filed nominations, and one YSRCP-turned-JSP supporter who had filed withdrew later.
As a result, the contest will see 10 YSRCP candidates pitted against nine TDP corporators and one BJP corporator from the NDA.

Election Commission Issues Notification For Vice Presidential Poll, Nomination Process Begins

August 25 is the last date to withdraw from the electoral battle. The post fell vacant on July 21 following the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, citing health reasons. Dhankhar's tenure was to end in August 2027. According to constitutional provisions, in case of a mid-term poll, the incumbent gets a full five-year term. The vice presidential election is set to be a keen contest with the Congress-led opposition likely to field a common candidate to take on the BJP-led NDA, which has the numbers on its side. Dhankhar's resignation was the first time an incumbent stepped down mid-term and did not seek a higher office. Earlier, VV Giri and R Venkataraman had quit their offices mid-term, but both were contesting the presidential election in 1969 and 1987, respectively. The Electoral College for the vice presidential election comprises members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, too, are eligible to vote in the vice presidential election. The electoral college for the vice presidential election comprises 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and 543 members of the Lok Sabha. There are five vacancies in Rajya Sabha and one in Lok Sabha, pegging the effective strength of the electoral college at 782. The ruling NDA has a comfortable edge in the ensuing poll. The 543-member Lok Sabha has one vacant seat, Basirhat in West Bengal\, while there are five vacancies in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. Of the five vacancies in Rajya Sabha, four are from Jammu and Kashmir, and one from Punjab. The seat from Punjab was vacated after AAP leader Sanjeev Arora quit following his election to the state assembly in a bypoll last month. The effective strength of both the Houses together is 782, and the winning candidate will require 391 votes, considering that all eligible voters exercise their franchise. In Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA enjoys the support of 293 of the 542 members. The ruling alliance has the support of 129 members in Rajya Sabha (effective strength 240), assuming that the nominated members vote in support of the NDA nominee.

YSRCP urges SEC to act on Pulivendula violence

Vijayawada: A delegation of senior YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders met Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Neelam Sawhney in Vijayawada on Wednesday, raising serious concerns about the violence 'unleashed' by TDP-backed goons in Pulivendula during the ZPTC by-election campaign. The leaders submitted detailed evidence and urged the Commission to intervene immediately and ensure a peaceful and democratic election process. Former ministers Perni Venkataramaiah (Nani), Velampalli Srinivas, MLCs Lella Appi Reddy and Ramesh Yadav, former MLA Malladi Vishnu, and other key district leaders including Devineni Avinash, Manohar Reddy, and Mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi were part of the delegation. They highlighted a series of violent incidents, including the brutal attack on MLC Ramesh Yadav and YSRCP leader Velpula Ramu, allegedly by over 30 TDP men armed with sticks and weapons. The victims were chased, dragged out of their vehicles, and assaulted near Nallagondavaripalli village, while the police remained mute spectators. The leaders alleged that the police and local administration were working hand-in-glove with the ruling party and failing to provide basic security to opposition candidates. They accused the TDP of deliberately creating fear among voters and misusing State power to disrupt the election. They also claimed YSRCP leaders were being targeted with bind-over cases and false arrests. The YSRCP delegation demanded that the Election Commission take immediate and stern action to stop the violence, protect candidates, and ensure free and fair local body elections in Pulivendula and across the State.

Foundation laid for Anna Canteen in Muthukur

Nellore: Sarvepalle MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy has alleged that the previous YSRCP government has closed Anna Canteens during its five-year tenure with political vengeance. On Wednesday, he laid foundation stone for the construction of Anna Canteen in Muthukur mandal, with an estimated cost of Rs 65 lakh. The MLA recalled that during TDP regime in 2014, there were two Anna Canteens in Muthukur and Podalakur mandals in Sarvepalle constituency. Pointing out that though DMK came to power by defeating AIDMK in Tamil Nadu, it continued Anna Canteens introduced by AIDMK, for the benefit of the poor in the State, Somireddy questioned YSRCP as to why it closed the canteens after it formed government in 2019 in the State. The MLA claimed that the coalition government led by TDP is keen on opening Anna Canteens across the State in a phased manner.
