Stephen Fry makes Who Wants to be a Millionaire history with £250,000 win
The former QI TV presenter took part in the first instalment of the celebrity version of the ITV show on Sunday night (26 January), and broke a record as the first celebrity to receive such a large amount of money on the programme.
Clarkson was instrumental to Fry's win, when the 'ask the host' option was used for the question: 'Which European city out of Brussels, Strasbourg, Munich and Luxembourg City would you come closest to if you walked a straight line from Paris to Berlin?'
The Clarkson's Farm star knew the answer, which was Luxembourg City, sending Fry through to the next round for a £125,000 question.
After a string of successful rounds, the broadcaster had to tap out and choose to bank his money after not knowing the answer to the question: 'Which of these cover songs entered the UK Top 40 the longest time after the original version first charted?'
The options were: 'Tragedy' by Steps, 'Fast Car' by Jonas Blue and Dakota, 'Uptown Girl' by Westlife and 'Killing me Softly by Fugees' – and the second option was the correct answer.
After it was revealed that Fry had secured £250,000 for his charity of choice, host Jeremy Clarkson dubbed the presenter's appearance the 'biggest celebrity win since I started this show'.
Speaking about his win, Fry said: 'Jeremy is very encouraging, and he was great with the question that took me to a quarter of a million.'
'It was a geographical question, and you had to work it out. Jeremy has travelled so much, particularly in the area that the question was about.
'He and I kind of agreed that it was one of two answers, and I thought 'I am going to risk it', and fortunately, it was right.
'This lifeline is a tremendous addition to the show. If Jeremy doesn't know, he will say but he will take you through the thinking and it slows things down. Once you start getting to the high numbers, you don't want to let the charity down.'
Fry also used the phone a friend option, and called up Pointless star and author Richard Osman on the £500,000 question – but Osman couldn't work out the answer in the limited time.
'I am delighted and I am not complaining at all,' said Fry. 'It was extremely good fun. The time goes so quickly.'
Fry said he will donate his prize to mental health charity Mind, which he has been the president of since 2011.
Viewers were impressed by Fry's knowledge when it came to methodically approaching each question.
One fan wrote on X/Twitter: 'I love how the genius Stephen Fry on #whowantstobeamillionaire doesn't just answer questions, but gives you full background and historical context to each answer.'
'Stephen Fry knows everything!' said one viewer, as another added: 'He was excellent!'

The Chase's Darragh Ennis shares natural method to eliminate pesky house flies
The Chase's Darragh Ennis, also known as The Menace on the ITV quiz show, has a genius hack for keeping flies out of your home - and it's all natural and costs just £12 You could ward off flies this summer with a "brilliant" tip shared by The Chase star Darragh Ennis. As an entomologist, Darragh has a clever method to eliminate the insects from your home, especially if you have houseplants that draw them in. In a recent TikTok video, the 44-year-old TV personality, also known as The Menace on the ITV quiz show, shared a straightforward and natural approach to tackle the small black flies that can prove troublesome during the summer months. These pests, called fungus gnats, can be "really hard" to eradicate and frequently inhabit houseplants, creating annoyance and prompting many people to abandon their plants entirely. Darragh said in his video: "If you've got little insects flying around your house, it can be really annoying. "Now, I'm an entomologist, so I love insects, but I still don't want those tiny little black flies all over my house, and they're really hard to get rid of - especially when they live in your houseplants. "They're called fungus gnats because they live in compost and stuff, and they're a big pest in mushroom growhouses and things. Getting rid of them with chemicals is really hard." Darragh recommends a strategy to maintain your houseplants whilst banishing the flies at the same time - utilising nematodes. He explained: "You've probably never heard of them, but they're little microscopic worms that live in the soil. "They're probably the most common animal on the planet, but we can't see them. There's billions upon billions upon billions of them." He continued: "One type of them crawls inside insects and kills them. Now, it's a bit gruesome, but it's a natural way of killing them. "You can just order these online. You just put these into a watering can and then pour them on your house plants. The best bit about this is that they crawl through the soil and hunts through the larvae and everything so they're gone. "So if you want to get rid of those little flies and you don't want loads of chemicals, buy some nematodes. I studied them for my PhD, and now they're useful in my house." Darragh also showed off the packet of nematodes he had bought online, branded as Sciarid Fly Nematodes, available on Amazon for roughly £12. How to ward off flies You can prevent flies from entering your home using several natural solutions, including utilising herbs and plants the pests despise the scent of. These include basil, lavender, mint, bay leaves, and marigold. Then you can also whip up an essential oil spray by mixing one cup of water, 10-15 drops of an essential oil such as peppermint, lemongrass, citronella, or lavender, and one tablespoon of vodka (optional, but aids in blending the oils) into a spray bottle and spritzing it around windows, doors, and other entry points in your home. Another popular method to keep flies at bay, especially tiny ones like fruit flies, is to create a homemade trap. This can be done by combining apple cider vinegar and washing up liquid in a bowl, covering it with cling film, and then piercing a few small holes in the top.

Good Morning Britain's Ed Balls leaves Charlotte Hawkins stunned with swipe at her 'podgy' appearance - as she warns him 'we'll have words after this'
Melvin Odoom had to intervene and diffuse tension while appearing on Tuesday's episode of Good Morning Britain 's after Ed Balls made a cheeky comment about his co-star Charlotte Hawkins. During the most recent episode of the ITV show, hosts Ed, 58, and Charlotte, 50, were chatting to Melvin, 44, about some of the showbiz headlines. One topic that got people talking about how singer Mariah Carey, 56, has said that 'aging just doesn't happen to her'. Just moments before they shared an old snap of the Ed on our screens, the broadcaster confessed: 'People look the same as when I was 21. But do I want that?' They then shared an old video of Charlotte showing off a white fitted coat while modelling on ITV's This Morning a number of years ago. Charlotte said: 'Oh don't show that one. No one wants to see that. There's a reason why people don't want to see that.' A shocked Melvin asked: 'When was that?!' to which Charlotte replied: 'It was on This Morning!' An intrigued Ed asked: 'Has Charlotte aged well or badly?' He continued: 'How have you aged? I think you have aged beautifully.' Charlotte said: 'Thank you Ed. That is very lovely of you to say.' Ed told her: 'You almost look younger than then. Then you were a bit more podgy.' Charlotte let out a big gasp as she was shocked with what he said. Melvin chimed in: 'Ed, Ed. Stop. Ed. Move on. I'm trying to help you my brother. Move on.' Moments after the segment wrapped up, Charlotte turned to her co-star and asked: 'Podgy?!' The show shared an old video of Charlotte showing off a white fitted coat while modelling on ITV's This Morning a number of years ago (pictured) Trying to get himself out of a very awkward situation, Ed told her: 'I think you look lovely.' Luckily Charlotte saw the funny side of things and said: 'We'll have words after this...' Last week Good Morning Britain viewers called for a presenter to be investigated by Ofcom as he hosted Tuesday's instalment of the ITV show. The latest episode of the programme saw Kate Garraway, 58, and Ed Balls, 58, return to our screens to discuss the latest headlines and newsworthy topics. During one segment the pair discussed the small boat crisis with Michael Gove, 57, and Kevin Maguire, 64. And some think that Ed shouldn't be involved in political interviews when his wife, Yvette Cooper, 56, is the Home Secretary. Some took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts. 'Ed Balls 'grilling' a Labour MP when you're wife's the Home Secretary should be investigated by OFCOM. It's not right...' 'Smug Ed Balls, whose wife is chief of command for protecting the public in this country, should pipe down.' 'I simply cannot stand Ed Balls, he is so smug and has a clear conflict of interest because his wife is a cabinet member (and not a good one either). His smug smile is so annoying!' 'Total embarrassment listening to #GMB this morning nearly every story mentioned by the panel is the actual responsibility of the Home just happens to be 'Mrs Ed Balls', the pointlessness of this 'chat' is truly appalling.' Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 from 6am and is available to stream on ITVX.

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi share rare glimpse of their blended family as they take Wolfie, Sienna and baby Athena to Lionesses' victory parade
Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have shared a rare glimpse of their blended family as the royal couple joined Lionesses fans at their Euros victory parade in London today. The King's niece, 36, and Edoardo made their way to The Mall to watch the European champions lift their hard-earned trophy as a 65,000-strong crowd cheered for the squad. The Lionesses waved at onlookers from atop a bus as it travelled down the thoroughfare - with the eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson also joining in the celebrations. The royal looked lovingly at her baby daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose, who was safely fastened to her father's chest. Beatrice gave birth to her and Edoardo's second daughter on January 22, with the couple shielding their newborn - dressed in an adorable, baby pink onesie - from cameras. Edoardo and Beatrice's older daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, three, however, appeared unfazed by the large gathering as she waved England's flag while enjoying a sweet treat during her most public appearance yet. In one sweet moment, Beatrice was seen leaning over to talk to Wolfie, Edoardo's eight-year-old son with his former fiancee, architect Dara Huang. Beatrice often refers to Wolfie as her 'bonus child' who is frequently seen at royal events and family gatherings, including Christmas celebrations at Sandringham and the Princess of Wales's 2024 carol concert. The family was casually dressed as Princess Beatrice went makeup-free for the victory parade after Sarina Wiegman's side thumped Spain 3-1 on penalties in the nail-biting final on Sunday, July 27. Beatrice pulled her hair back into a messy bun and dressed for cooler weather in London today as she paired a cream sweater with a blue, floral print maxi skirt from Farm Rio. Sienna was matching with her baby sister, as the toddler was dressed in a pink t-shirt - with an adorable bow clipped to her blonde hair. Prior to today's appearance, Sienna's family has only shown the back of her head in public posts and birthday announcements. However, a friend of Beatrice told Tatler earlier this year: 'Sienna is absolutely gorgeous and looks exactly like Bea. She's really cheeky and has a very good personality.' Buckingham Palace announced Princess Beatrice and Edoardo - who tied the knot in 2020 - welcomed Athena Rose on January 22. The newborn is 11th in line to the British throne, pushing her aunt Princess Eugenie down to 12th place. The family's trip to The Mall to celebrate the Lionesses victory comes after Beatrice's cousin, Prince William and his daughter Charlotte travelled to Basel, Switzerland, to watch the dramatic Euros final last week. The team roared to a 3-1 victory in a thrilling penalty shootout that saw them triumph over Spain and retain their title as the European champions following their 2022 win. Sweet images of the young princess with her father show them doing almost exactly identical expressions of shock as the tense match unfolded. The royal was also given a winners medal to keep after the presentation ceremony - which she was seen holding on to reverently. Princess Beatrice's most recent appearance comes after she and Edoardo marked their fifth wedding anniversary. The British property developer, 41, paid tribute to Beatrice as an 'incredible partner, the most beautiful and amazing wife' in a gushing Instagram post on July 17 - five years after the couple said 'I do' in a private Windsor ceremony. He shared a snap of the couple posing together on a beach in Scotland, which he accompanied with the sweet caption. It read: 'Happy 5th Anniversary to my incredible partner, the most beautiful and amazing wife. I cherish every moment we've spent together and am deeply grateful for our journey. Here's to countless more years filled with laughter and tons of love!' The Lionesses have enjoyed a heroes' welcome after they emerged victorious over the Spanish side in a dramatic finale to the Euros tournament. Thousands of fans joined in the victory celebrations as they cruised through The Mall on board a bus emblazoned with the slogan '2022 and 2025 European Champions' just after noon today. Rapid preparations had been made for the ceremony after Sarina Wiegman's team thumped Spain 3-1 on penalties following a tense and drawn-out 120 minutes of stalemate football in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday. The Lionesses turned out in t-shirts that read 'HOME', with the 'H' stylised as a pair of letter 'I's in recognition of their two European titles on the trot, and red scarves bearing the Three Lions and the word 'CHAMPIONS'. Kerry Davis - the first Black women's footballer to play for England - then brought out the Euro 2025 trophy alongside Jane Oboavwoduo, a 14-year-old forward in the England Under-17s, before the team hoisted it aloft in a flurry of red smoke to the cheers of thousands. A tearful Leah Williamson told the crowds it had been like a 'fairytale', adding: 'I've been crying all the way down the Mall. It's unbelievable. It's one of the best things we've ever been a part of.' She continued: 'There's lots of ways to win a football match and we repeatedly did it the hard way. You can see how much we care about playing for England. How much we love it.'
