Former WI skipper Pooran announces retirement from international cricket
In a development that has taken the cricketing world by surprise, star West Indies batter and former white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The Trinidad-born southpaw, who made his debut in 2016, revealed the news via social media, stating that the decision followed 'much thought and reflection'.
Pooran, who recently opted out of the West Indies' T20I series against England, offered no specific reason for his decision but expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Caribbean. His departure ends a career that saw him become the most capped West Indies T20I player and their leading run-scorer in the format.
A decorated white-ball career
Pooran leaves behind a legacy built on explosive batting and consistent performances. He played 106 T20 Internationals, amassing 2,275 runs at a strike rate of 136.39. In the ODI format, he featured in 61 matches, scoring 1,983 runs at a healthy average of 39.66. Cricket West Indies described him as a 'game changer' and 'a world-class player', acknowledging the void his retirement will create in the national setup.
Leadership and legacy
Pooran also served as the West Indies' white-ball captain and reflected on the privilege of leading his team. In his farewell note, he said wearing the maroon and hearing the national anthem were experiences he would cherish forever. Though he won't play for West Indies again, he insisted his love for Caribbean cricket remains 'unshaken'.
Focus shifts to franchise cricket
Meanwhile, Pooran will continue to play franchise cricket all around the globe. Following a record-breaking 2024, when he hit 170 sixes in a calendar year, he ended IPL 2025 with 524 runs at a staggering strike rate of 196.25. With stints lined up in Major League Cricket, The Hundred, and the ILT20, the flamboyant batter's journey is far from over — just now beyond the international stage.

IND vs ENG: KL Rahul has special message to Karun Nair ahead of England series
KL Rahul and Karun Nair Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has expressed strong support for his former Karnataka teammate Karun Nair, who has made a comeback to the Indian Test cricket squad after an eight-year gap. Nair, who previously scored a triple century against England in 2016, earned his recall following impressive performances in domestic cricket and county cricket in England. Karun Nair's return to the national team comes after a successful stint with Northampton in the 2024 County Championship Division Two, where he scored 487 runs in 11 innings. His recent form includes a double century (204) for India A against England Lions in an unofficial Test match. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The 33-year-old Nair demonstrated exceptional form in domestic cricket last season, accumulating nine centuries across different formats. His Ranji Trophy campaign yielded 863 runs in 9 matches at an average of 53.93, including four centuries and two half-centuries. 07:10 'Nitish Kumar is a guy who can bowl that magic ball': India bowling coach Morne Morkel In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Nair maintained his impressive run-scoring ability, amassing 779 runs in eight innings at an average of 389.50, including five centuries. His first-class cricket record shows 8470 runs in 186 innings at an average of 49.82, with 24 centuries and 36 half-centuries. "I've known him for a very long time and the months that he spent here in the UK playing cricket and how hard and how lonely it was and for him to be able to do all of that and come back into the Indian team," KL Rahul said in a video posted by BCCI . "I think it's special for him, for his family, and for friends like us who've seen his journey. So, like I said very inspiring as well and hopefully his experience and his learnings from playing county cricket here will hold him in good stead when he plays the Test matches here," Rahul added. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Nair's previous stint with the Indian Test team lasted from November 2016 to March 2017, during which he scored 374 runs in seven innings. His career highlight came when he became only the second Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag to score a triple century in Test cricket, achieving the feat with an unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai in December 2016. "Feels really special. Very grateful and very fortunate to be able to get this opportunity again and really looking forward and excited to grab this opportunity with both hands," Nair said in response to his selection. "Not sure actually! I think I'll have to experience that feeling myself and, you know, just go out there and feel it for myself. And I'm sure there'll be a lot of feelings, ones that I can't express right now and It'll be a special feeling," Nair added when asked about his emotions regarding the comeback. The duo of Rahul and Nair share a long history, having played age-group cricket together and recently representing Delhi Capitals in the 2025 IPL season. Nair's selection for the upcoming five-match Test series against England comes with the advantage of his recent experience in English conditions through county cricket.

BCCI Apex Council to discuss norms for IPL victory celebrations after Bengaluru stampede; RCB ban not on cards
Stampede in Bengaluru left 11 dead as lakhs reached the Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title. Mumbai: The BCCI is looking to make standard guidelines for IPL victory celebrations in its Apex Council meeting on June 14, in the wake of the tragic stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives, but there's no likelihood of IPL-2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru being banned or 'facing any kind of punishment', a reliable source in the Board told TOI. The formulation of standard guidelines for IPL victory celebrations, in the wake of the tragic stampede in Bengaluru, is among the key items on the agenda when the BCCI holds its 'Emergent' Apex Council Meeting on Saturday. The meeting will be held virtually at 4pm. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The tragedy occurred on June 4 following RCB's victory after 18 years when nearly 2.5 lakh fans flocked the stadium and its surrounding areas to catch a glimpse of superstar Virat Kohli & Co, leading to a stampede that left 11 dead and 56 injured. IPL 2025 Final | Rishi Sunak Interview: 'I am a big Virat Kohli fan... RCB is my team' 'We will discuss how this kind of a tragedy can be avoided in the future, and what are the steps that can be taken in this regard. The need of formulation of norms for IPL victory celebration will be discussed during the meeting, but we're not looking to ban RCB or take any action against the franchise. We want to have a constructive, positive discussion around what steps are needed to manage these celebrations better. The RCB celebration was held without intimating the BCCI about it. NZ to tour India in Jan next year for white-ball series Meanwhile, TOI has learnt that New Zealand will tour India from January 11-31, 2026 for a white-ball series, which is likely to comprise three ODIs and five T20Is. The Apex Council will also discuss the 'BCCI Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials,' which was implemented by the Board after India's dismal tour of Australia. The code, which mandates a limited number of days for families on overseas tours, had come in for sharp criticism from India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma and superstar Virat Kohli, who both retired from Test cricket, just before the England tour last month. The Apex Council will review the existing 'AVP'-Age Verification Programme, which is a mechanism that is aimed at curbing age-fudging in age-group cricket, particularly in the Under-16 (boys) and Under-15 (girls) categories. Another matter listed on the agenda is the complaint filed in April 2025 by Karimnagar District Cricket Association president V Agam Rao. He alleged irregularities in the utilisation of funds allocated for cricket infrastructure development in Telangana districts. Acting on the complaint, BCCI Ombudsman Justice Arun Mishra directed the Apex Council to take appropriate action.
