West Indies all-rounder Russell set to retire from international cricket
St John's [Antigua]: West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell will be retiring from international cricket, with the opening two games of the five-match T20I series against Australia at home set to be his last games for the Windies, reported ESPNCricinfo on Wednesday. Russell, 37, has been included in the squad for the five-match series, and the first two matches, taking place at his home ground of Sabina Park in Jamaica, will serve as his farewell to international cricket. Since 2019, Russell has been an exclusively T20I player for his country. He has played 84 T20Is for WI, scoring 1,078 runs at an average of 22.00, with a strike rate of 163.08, with three half-centuries and a best score of 71. He has also taken 61 wickets at an average of 30.59, with best figures of 3/19. His retirement comes just seven months before the next ICC T20 World Cup to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February 2026. Russell is the West Indies' second high-profile retirement in recent times, with their batter Nicholas Pooran having bid goodbye to international cricket recently at the age of 29. Russell has only played one Test for WI, while he has also played 56 ODIs, scoring 1,034 runs at an average of 27.21, with a strike rate of over 130, four half-centuries and a best score of 92*. In ODIs, he has 70 wickets at an average of 31.84, with best bowling figures of 4/35. The 37-year-old was the part of West Indies teams which won the ICC T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016. Russell has played a massive part in several T20 leagues, scoring 9,316 runs in 561 matches at an average of 26.39, with strike rate of over 168. His resume includes two centuries and 33 fifties, with a best score of 121*. As a bowler, he has taken 485 wickets at an average of 25.85, with best figures of 5/15. He recently featured in the Major Cricket League (MLC) in the USA for Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR), scoring 126 runs in nine matches and eight innings at an average of 25.20, with best score of 65*, his solitary half-century. He also took 10 wickets at an average of 32.90, with best figures of 3/30. His team failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing at the bottom of the table. West Indies' Russell to retire from internationals
West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after two matches of the upcoming T20 series against Australia. The big-hitting batter and seamer will play two farewell games at his home ground of Sabina Park in Jamaica. Russell has played one Test, 56 ODIs and 84 T20s for West Indies, winning the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. He struck 2,114 runs in those appearances, with 157 fours and 147 sixes, and took 132 wickets. "I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean," said Russell. The 37-year-old has only played in the 20-over format since 2019, and retires with less than a year to go until the 2026 World Cup. Cricket West Indies say Russell has been "selected on merit" for his final two appearances. "Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life," Russell added. "When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve." Russell is the second senior player to retire from the West Indies set-up in recent months, after Nicholas Pooran stepped away in June, aged 29. He is a fixture on the T20 franchise circuit, playing 561 games in the shortest format in games around the world. The matches at Sabina Park on 20 and 22 July are followed by three more fixtures in St Kitts and Nevis, with the last game on 28 July. Get cricket news sent straight to your phone

West Indies Being Used As 'Stepping Stone' For T20 Leagues: Shocked Brian Lara After 27 All Out Shocker
West Indies cricket plunged to a new low during the third Test against Australia at Kingston, where they were bowled out for just 27 runs, the second-lowest total in Test history. The dismal display has further highlighted the long-standing struggles of the once-mighty cricketing powerhouse. The team's poor showing wasn't an isolated incident. West Indies have failed to find consistency throughout the World Test Championship (WTC) cycles, finishing eighth in all three editions. Their red-ball cricket has looked increasingly out of sync with the demands of the modern game, and their decline continues to hurt the global Test cricket ecosystem. Adding to the concerning trend is the growing number of players prioritising franchise T20 cricket over international commitments. Nicholas Pooran, once seen as the future of Caribbean cricket, retired from international cricket at just 29, though he continues to shine in various T20 leagues across the globe. Cricket legend Brian Lara has voiced his concern over the changing mindset among players on the Stick to Cricket podcast. He said, "We played first-class cricket and some of us even played county cricket to try to get into the West Indies team. We are now using the WI as a stepping stone you know to, as a stage for us, to get contracts around (for franchise cricket circuit) and that is not a fault of the player you know..." Lara's words reflect the stark contrast between past generations that aspired for Test greatness and the present crop, many of whom use international appearances as a launchpad for lucrative T20 opportunities. The decline isn't limited to the longest format. Since winning the T20 World Cup in 2016, West Indies haven't clinched a major ICC title. Their failure to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup marked another blow, symbolising a system struggling to produce results across formats. The cricketing world is beginning to see the imbalance that may be contributing to this downfall. Former England all-rounder David Lloyd pointed fingers at the structural inequalities in global cricket. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, he said, "The big three (England, Australia and India), that can't be right that they take all the money, they get the big broadcast deals. You've got to have a more even distribution to allow West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka to compete."

MLC 2025 Final Live Streaming: How To Watch Washington Freedom vs MI New York In India, USA, UK & More
The stage is set for an electrifying finale as Washington Freedom lock horns with MI New York in the grand finale of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The clash, scheduled for July 14 at 5:30 AM IST (July 13, 7 PM local time), promises fireworks, drama, and world-class cricket as two contrasting journeys collide for the ultimate prize. Washington Freedom have been the benchmark for consistency in MLC 2025, topping the league with 16 points from 10 matches. Led by Glenn Maxwell, the Freedom side boasts a perfect blend of explosive power and tactical depth. Their passage to the final was cemented by topping the table, gaining direct entry after a rain-hit Qualifier. In contrast, MI New York epitomize resilience. Scraping into the playoffs with just 3 wins in 10 matches, they have morphed into giant-slayers during the knockout stages. Powered by the experience of Nicholas Pooran and Kieron Pollard, MI New York stunned the San Francisco Unicorns in the Eliminator before outclassing the Texas Super Kings in the Challenger. Their momentum and belief make them serious title contenders. Washington Freedom: Balance and Brilliance The Freedom squad thrives on its all-round strength. Captain Glenn Maxwell has not only led with the bat but has also provided crucial overs in the middle. New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra has anchored the top order with flair, while wicketkeeper Andries Gous and Glenn Phillips offer dynamism in the middle overs. In the bowling department, Lockie Ferguson's expected return will bolster their pace battery alongside the steady Ian Holland and the experienced Saurabh Netravalkar. Washington's strength lies in their depth and adaptability—traits that have powered them to the top. MI New York: Stars Rising at the Right Time While their league phase was rocky, MI New York's resurgence has been driven by their international stars. Nicholas Pooran, who also leads the side, has delivered under pressure, and Quinton de Kock's experience at the top has laid solid foundations. The presence of Kieron Pollard as a finisher and motivator has been vital, especially in crunch moments. On the bowling front, Trent Boult has been a standout performer, swinging the new ball with menace and delivering at the death. Support from Tajinder Singh and Nosthush Kenjige has added variety to their attack. Conditions, Forecast & Final Expectations Dallas has generally produced batting-friendly wickets, encouraging scores in the 160–180 range. Both sides possess the firepower to exploit such surfaces. However, light rain is forecasted, which could introduce the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, adding unpredictability to the high-stakes finale.
