Police department increasing OVI patrols ahead of St. Patrick's Day

The Miami Township Police Department will be taking park in the St. Patrick's Day Blitz from March 10-17, 2025.

Law Enforcement officers will be on patrol and 'will show zero tolerance for impaired driving,' according to a release from the police department.
The St. Patrick's Day Blitz is funded through the Ohio Transportation Safety Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It allows officers to focus more attention on reducing crashes, increase OVI patrols and participate in nation safety campaigns.
'Anytime you take an impaired driver off the road, you are preventing a potentially deadly incident,' Acting Chief of Police James McCarty, said. 'Driving while impaired is deadly and illegal and we have zero tolerance for anyone driving under in influence of drugs or alcohol.'
It is important to designate a sober driver if planning to drink. Here are some more tips offered by the NHTSA and MTPD:
Plan for a safe ride home before you start the party.
Choose a non-drinking friend as a designated driver.
If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys and help them arrange a sober ride home.
If you drink, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, a ride service, or a sober friend.
If you are hosting a party where alcohol will be served, make sure all guests leave with a sober driver behind the wheel.
Always wear your seat belt. It is the best protection against impaired drivers.
There were 13,524 fatal alcohol-related crashes nationwide in 2024, average one DUI fatality every 39 minutes according to the NHTSA.

CDC gives inside look of damage from shooting
Staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave perspective from inside headquarters on the frightening day when a shooter opened fire. There is still damage, reminders left from the day nearly two weeks ago. The shooter was at the nearby CVS when he aimed at the CDC and fired hundreds of rounds. 'He found a location where he had a good visual of CDC facilities and potentially CDC staff,' Williams said. The blast-resistant glass, installed after the Oklahoma City bombings, helped prevent more extensive damage. First responders went floor by floor, marking doors as clear to ensure everyone was safe. People can see what they did in the aftermath of the shooting, busting down the doors, going room to room. Mona Patel, who has since returned to the office, noted the difficulty of seeing broken glass on colleagues' desks. 'I think we're resilient. I believe we're here to support one another,' Patel expressed, highlighting the community's strength. Repairs are currently underway at the guard house, with similar repairs expected for all six buildings that were hit. ‘Asked for her mom:' First responders testify about treating teens killed in crash with ex-trooper
On the second day of testimony in the trial of a former state trooper charged with vehicular homicide, first responders described how they attended to the four injured teenagers at the crash scene. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Two of those teens, 17-year-old Kylie Lindsey and 16-year-old Isabella Chichilla, died in the hospital. The crash happened along U.S. 27 in Carroll County in September 2015. Investigators say the trooper, Andrew 'A.J.' Scott, was driving up to 90 mph at night without lights and sirens. The cruiser crashed into the teens' Nissan Sentra. John McCorsley was a Bremen firefighter who responded and treated one of the teens who did not survive. He testified that he placed her neck in a brace and tried to keep her stable and calm. 'I was treating her as if it was a head injury because she kept repeating that she wanted to call her mom, wanted to call her mom,' he said. Marcus Shanks is a Carrollton firefighter who was in the ambulance with Lindsey. 'She told me her first name and she asked for her mom,' he said. 'I do remember talking to him on the way to the hospital,' she said. 'He was starting to ask questions. Was everyone OK? Are my friends OK? At the time, I told him I didn't know because I truly didn't.' The prosecution showed photographs of the crash scene where beer containers and liquor bottles could be seen in and around the teens' car. Investigators testified that despite the presence of alcohol, there was insufficient evidence to charge the driver with driving under the influence. Scott, the defendant, was fired from the Georgia State Patrol after the crash and went on to become the mayor of Buchanan, in Haralson County, where he's still in office. He's charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving and speeding. He could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted. This is the second time Scott is being tried for the case. A judge declared a mistrial in 2019, saying the prosecution withheld evidence.
