SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium, July 27 (Reuters) - Former Red Bull team boss Christian Horner posted a video on social media of himself riding on horseback in the English countryside on the day of the Belgian Grand Prix.
"Different horse power this Sunday," read the simple caption.
Spa-Francorchamps marked the start of a new era for the former Formula One champions, the first race without Horner -- dismissed two weeks ago -- at the helm since Red Bull entered the sport in 2005.
New boss Laurent Mekies started with a win, with Max Verstappen taking the Saturday sprint, and then a frustrating fourth place for the Dutch four-times world champion in the main Sunday grand prix.
Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda failed to score for the sixth race in a row.
Apart from expressing surprise at the long delay in getting the race started, due to heavy rain, Mekies avoided any polemic.
He blamed the team for Tsunoda's blank, saying the Japanese had done a great job in qualifying but was called in too late for his pitstop in a mistake that cost him three or four positions.
"After two weeks at the factory, trying to meet as many people as possible, it was nice to also meet the race team," said the Frenchman when asked to assess the weekend.
"To also enter into the race dynamics and see how the flows and the processes and preparation are. That was super-good in terms of getting to know the team. As you would imagine, it's a team where everything is done at the mega level."
Horner's absence was the talk of the paddock but by the time the circus regroups in Budapest next week, the conversation is likely to have moved on.
"I think Laurent is very good. The sport moves on quickly, so it probably won't be something that we're talking about come Monday," McLaren boss Zak Brown told Sky Sports television.
"He (Horner) had fantastic results. It's a shame to kind of go out the way he did."
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said earlier in the weekend that he would miss his old sparring partner and Netflix 'Drive to Survive' protagonist -- in a way -- and expected him to return sooner or later.
"I don't think he's gone forever. I think he's going to pop up in some kind of other function," said the Austrian. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

The service's expected expansion will follow a limited pilot in Austin, Texas, where a small fleet of vehicles started operating within a geofenced area. In San Francisco, the initial operational zone is expected to cover the broader Bay Area. Select Tesla owners have received early invitations, and the launch has reportedly also been moved up. Expansion plans for this service even include states like Nevada, Arizona, and Florida, but broader deployment depends on obtaining regulatory approvals. In California, Tesla has yet to complete the permit process required for full driverless services, with state agencies emphasising safety evaluations. The service is said to be introduced on an invite-only basis that will allow Tesla to manage safety, collect data, and meet compliance standards. Elon Musk and Tesla have been taken to court by a group of shareholders who allege the company misled them about the safety of its self-driving technology, including the much-publicised Robotaxi. The lawsuit, filed as a proposed class action on Monday, accuses Musk and Tesla of concealing serious risks associated with autonomous driving, according to a report by Reuters. The legal action follows Tesla's first public test of its Robotaxi fleet, which took place in late June in Austin, Texas. During the demonstration, vehicles were reportedly seen speeding, braking sharply, mounting a curb, driving in the wrong lane, and dropping off passengers in the middle of busy multi-lane roads. Tesla's share price fell by 6.1 per cent over the two trading sessions following the test, wiping out approximately $68 billion in market value. Shareholders say Tesla overstated tech readiness The lawsuit claims Musk and Tesla exaggerated the readiness and potential of their self-driving systems, inflating the company's valuation and stock price. Shareholders cited remarks made during an April 22 conference call, where Musk said Tesla was 'laser-focused on bringing Robotaxi to Austin in June'. On the same day, Tesla asserted its autonomous technology would allow for 'scalable and safe deployment across diverse geographies and use cases'. It seeks damages on behalf of investors who held Tesla shares between April 19, 2023, and June 22, 2025. In a separate development, a Florida jury on August 1 found Tesla 33 per cent liable for a 2019 fatal crash involving its self-driving software. The accident killed a 22-year-old woman and seriously injured her boyfriend. The court ordered Tesla to pay approximately $243 million in damages. Tesla argued the driver was at fault and has said it plans to appeal the ruling.
