Medieval knight's 1,000-year-old tomb is unearthed beneath ice cream shop in ‘insane' archaeological breakthrough
Archaeologists have unearthed what they believe to be the tomb of a medieval knight beneath the structure.

The remains were found under a busy street corner in Gdańsk, a city in northern Poland.
This area is known for its rich history, with other archaeological dicoveries made at the same site.
A statement from Poland's Provincial Council for the Protection of Monuments detailed the finding.
Medieval era
The grave is thought to be from either the 13th or 14th century, according to a report shared on the city's website.
It also revealed that the knight measured about 5-feet-6 and is estimated to have been about 40 years old at the time of his death.
Researchers believe the man was a knight due to a hand-carved limestone tombstone over his grave, which depicted a knight holding a shield.
Popular Mechanics reported that the coat of arms on the carved shield has worn away, meaning researchers are currently unable to determine who the knight served.
While the city of Gdańsk was ruled by the Teutonic Knights in 1308, the buried knight could also have served a number of different rulers.
According to experts, other contenders include a Sobieslaw dynasty or a German house.
Researchers with the Polish archaeological company ArcheoScan have been studying the area since 2023.

This project took place after a popular local ice cream parlor, which had stood on the site for 60 years, was sold to developers.
Developers are required by law to allow archaeologists to survey the site before any new structures could be built, according to Science in Poland.
Previous discoveries
The outlet reported that researchers had previously discovered the remains of a large wooden church at the site and over 200 burial sites and six tombstones.
"What we're unearthing here is insane," Sylwia Kurzyńska, a member of the archaeological team, told the Polish Associated Press.
She also revealed that a fragment of the knight's chainmail boot and leggings were preserved.
The tombstone and skeleton have since been taken to the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk, where they will undergo further study, reports Smithsonian Magazine.
Researchers plan to learn more about who the knight was and where he came from.
They said they hope to release more about their findings sometime in 2026.

Urgent warning to parents as expert reveals the cuddly toys you should NEVER put in the washing machine – including two very popular brands
Most parents would agree that their child's cuddly toy can get a bit mucky sometimes. From being dropped on the floor to covered in food, it doesn't take long for them to get dirty and smelly. It might be tempting to throw them in the wash to get rid of the grime. But an expert has revealed there are some brands of toy you should never put in the washing machine. And doing so could potentially ruin your child's favourite teddy bear. Rebecca Jakeman, senior researcher at Which?, said some cuddly toys should be 'handwashed at all costs' to avoid damaging them. 'Always check the label, but certain brands of soft toys are handwash-only for the most part,' she said. These include two very popular brands – Beanie Babies and Jellycats. TY, the company which manufactures Beanie Babies, writes on its website: 'Stuffed animals travel everywhere with kids, so it's no surprise parents often find themselves searching for how to clean plush toys after a mess or spill. 'It doesn't matter if you go to the grocery store, library, a friend's house, school, or for a car ride; you can be sure the Beanie is glued to your youngster's hip. 'Meal and snack times are no exception, so when an unfortunate spill of grape juice or spaghetti sauce stains the cherished plush beanie, it becomes crunch time to find a solution to clean the tarnished plush.' It goes on to explain that putting the stuffed toys in with a load of laundry can be asking for trouble. 'The washer's spin cycles, the heat from the dryer and the harsh detergents used to wash your clothes aren't a good combination for a delicate plush toy,' it said. 'Your washer and dryer appliances aren't a friend to your child's Beanie pal, especially if it has fragile, sparkly eyes, fur, sequins, or scales.' Instead, they recommend using baby wipes or a stain remover pen that can do the trick if only a spot clean is needed. However, if the whole toy is dirty, it's best to handwash using soap and cool water before leaving to air dry. The Jellycat website, meanwhile, says that while 'many' of its products can be washed at 30°C in a washing machine, some must be washed by hand. 'We do not recommend that any of our toys be put in a tumble dryer,' it added, 'nor should they be ironed or dry cleaned.' The Which? website also warns against putting clothes with embellishments, glitter, lace and fringing in the washing machine. Anything with fur, leather, suede, velvet or rayon are also better off going to the drycleaners. How to clean stuffed toys There are several ways to safely clean your child's dirty stuffed toy. Baby Wipes - If you have baby wipes on hand, gently wipe the soiled area with them. Gently dabbing and softly rubbing the dirty spot may help clean the toy plush. Cold Washcloth - Grab a washcloth or a paper towel, and run it under cold water. Wring the cloth out, and blot it on the smeared spot until the stain comes off. Stain Remover Pen - If using only water to remove the blemish didn't do the trick, you can try using a stain remover pen. Apply the concentrated stain remover to the tarnished area, and use a wet cloth to lift the stain. Baking Soda - You may have some baking soda around, whether for freshness or baking. Use a small amount of baking soda if the stain is particularly greasy, as it will help absorb the oil. Then, spot clean with a damp cloth. Handwash - Use soap and cool water if the entire toy is tarnished. Let the plush air dry, and then use a soft-bristled brush to fluff out the fur. Vacuum - If the plush was dropped in dirt outside or a sandbox, start by vacuuming what you can. Then, try any of the cleaning methods above. Air Dry - No matter which way you spot clean the toy, you want to make sure it air dries. You can start by using a towel to gently pat the plush animal dry, absorbing some of the excess water.

THESE are the four skills your child need to know before starting primary school in September. As the back-to-school period begins to dawn upon us, here is a checklist of everything your child needs to know ahead of making the big step. 2 According to ArkStart, teachers believe only one in three children are actually ready to start primary school by the time September rolls around. To ensure that your child is classroom ready it has put together a guide for parents to follow. 1. Growing independence The first skill children are encouraged to learn before starting reception is independence - in other words, being able to take care of themselves on a basic level. Can your child take their coat and shoes on and off, can they use the toilet and wash their hands on their own? Other tasks your child should be able to manage include, being able to drink from an open cup, being able to use a fork or spoon, and being able to get dressed with little help. If your child is not quite there yet - don't panic! There is plenty of time to help them get ready. When it comes to dressing, start by letting your child practice taking off clothes - this is often easier than putting them on! Bedtime is a great opportunity to practice swapping clothes. And the type of clothes they wear can make a big difference - loose, with velcro fittings, or elasticated waistbands. Learning to dress independently takes time, so be patient and understanding. Your child should also be familiar with spending time apart from you. This can be practiced through dedicated 'alone time'. If kids feel comfortable and confident playing on their own, they will also feel capable of other tasks on their own. 2. Building relationships and communicating For lots of tots, this will be their first time being around such a large group of other children each day. In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, it is a good idea to get your child used to spending more time with other kids. ArkStart recommends that parents use the summer holidays as an opportunity to start familiarising their children with being with and around others. A great place to start is by looking into events that schools may be putting in on in preparation for welcoming new pupils in September. Lots of schools will offer taster sessions and welcome days in the build up to term. Another good idea is to organise some playdates with children who will be starting at the same school, so both you and your child know a familiar face in the playground on the first day. ArkStart also advises that you practice sharing and taking turns with toys. Sharing may be a novel concept to your child who hasn't yet had to deal with thirty other classmates wanting to use the same toys. Introducing these concepts to your child now is a therefore a great idea. The prospect of starting big school will no doubt feel extremely daunting, so experts also suggest that you encourage a positive line of communication surrounding school and learning from early on. Try singing along to nursery rhymes, trialing different counting activities and crafting to start introducing the subjects they may be learning in a positive and exciting way. Anything you can do to make learning and the idea of school seem fun is worth your time! Another top tip is to ensure that your child is familiar with their name, so they can easily find it on a coat peg or on the labels of their clothes. 3. Physical development Starting school can also take a physical drain on your child as they adjust to five days a week of learning. Help your little one adjust to this change by introducing daily movement into your routine. It is recommended that you try and get your child moving for at least three hours a day, to aid them in adjusting to the busier primary school schedule. Among the activities you could do are climbing, running, and playing. Also, why not make the most of the sunny August weather and take your child on walks or bike rides where they can explore green spaces. For the rainy days, crafting is also a good idea. Cutting, sticking and drawing are all activities which will help you child strengthen their grip, while also flexing their creative muscles. Extra help with school uniform costs IF you can't get targeted help from your council, you might have some other options available to you. In some areas, you can talk directly to your school, which might be able to offer you clothing. Or, you might be able to get cheap garments from low-budget shops or charity stores. Some charities offer help to families in need too. But bear in mind charities often have a limited amount of money to give and usually have specific criteria which must be met in order to get a grant. Charity Turn2Us has a free grants search tool on its website which you can use to find out what help is available to you. Meanwhile, you can always try approaching your nearest Citizens' Advice branch. Healthy routines Getting into a healthy routine is really important as September begins to roll around. It also suggests limiting screen time to the recommended daily amounts, which will both help with sleep and get them used to not having as much screen time when school commences.
