Handball: Ahly drawn with Veszprem in IHF Club World Championship, Zamalek to face Barcelona - Omni sports
As tournament hosts and African champions, Ahly were granted the privilege of selecting their group and opted for Group B.
According to the competition format, the three group winners will advance to the semi-finals, along with the best-performing runner-up across all groups.
Defending champions Veszprem boast four Egyptian players in their squad: Yehia El-Deraa, Ahmed Hisham, and former Ahly players Ali Zein and Ahmed Adel, who joined the Hungarian side this summer.
Ahly made history last year by becoming the first non-European team to defeat Barcelona, beating them in the third-place playoff.
They also met Sydney University in the group stage, securing a commanding 49–15 victory.
The draw, held at Cairo Stadium on Monday, handed domestic rivals Zamalek a tough clash in Group C, where they will face Spanish giants Barcelona and Brazil's Handebol Clube Taubate, winners of the South and Central American Men's Club Championship.
Group A also features UAE champions Sharjah, winners of the Asian Club League Championship; the United States' California Eagles, champions of the North American and Caribbean Club Championship; and European champions SC Magdeburg of Germany.

Spanish coach Riveiro lays down the law for Ahly stars - Egyptian Football
Spanish coach Jose Riveiro has laid down the law to the stars of African giants Ahly of Egypt as they prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign. Cairo-based Ahly have won the elite African club competition a record 12 times -- seven times more than closest rivals Zamalek of Egypt and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo. But last season they fell in the semi-finals to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, losing the tie on away goals after Yasser Ibrahim conceded an own goal in the final minute of regular time. Defeat was particularly painful for the Cairo Red Devils as it was the fourth time they had won back-to-back titles only to fail to create history by lifting the trophy three consecutive times. After three seasons and five trophies with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, Riveiro moved to Ahly last May and has yet to celebrate a victory. Ahly drew with Inter Miami and Porto, who they led four times, at the Club World Cup in the United States and lost to Brazilian outfit Palmeiras. If the 49-year-old Spaniard believed the Egypt Premier League kick-off last weekend would bring a chance of fortunes, he was mistaken. Away to Modern Future, who finished 14th last season, Ahly had to come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to a Yassin Marei goal. "There is no place for names, and no room for favouritism," said a visibly angry Riveiro after that match. "Whoever proves himself in training and in matches will get chances -- whoever disobeys instructions will have no role in the team." No future Queried by reporters about his line-up, Riveiro said: "I am the coach and I decide who participates and who does not". Riveiro stressed to his squad the need for full commitment to his tactics, warning those who failed to follow them would have no future at Ahly. He echoed the comments of the last two Ahly coaches, South African Pitso Mosimane and Swiss Marcel Koller, that Ahly want to win every competition they are involved in. But Riveiro knows winning the Champions League is of paramount importance for several reasons, including qualification for the 2029 Club World Cup. They have a first round bye in qualifying and will tackle the winners between Aigle Noir of Burundi and ASAS of Djibouti for a place in the group phase. The Club World Cup this year gave Ahly and the other three African representatives, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Esperance of Tunisia and Wydad Casblanca of Morocco, unrivalled riches. Each club received $9.5 million for qualifying plus an additional $2 million for a win and $1 million for a draw. Sundowns did best, taking home $12.5 million. Wydad will not be involved in the coming Champions League as they finished third in the Moroccan league, leaving champions Renaissance Berkane and runners-up FAR Rabat to represent the kingdom. FAR and the other seven quarter-finalists last season, including eventual champions Pyramids of Egypt will be back, and the field includes 10 former champions and six winners of other CAF competitions. Pyramids will face Rwandan army outfit APR for the third straight season in qualifying and will be expected to complete a hat-trick of aggregate victories. Should the defending champions advance, they will face Insurance of Ethiopia or Mlandege of Zanzibar for a group place. Mali club hope motorbikes can help drive for CAF Cup glory - Africa
CAF Confederation Cup contenders Djoliba of Mali hope gifts of motorbikes can steer them to success in a competition where they once finished runners-up. Officials at the Bamako club, who have dominated domestic football with neighbours Stade Malien for decades, told reporters they had motivated the squad by presenting 21 motorbikes to players. But the Djoliba bosses said the gifts came with conditions, including that they must be used exclusively for training and matchdays. "The bikes must not be used for social activities, or for commercial purposes. We presented the gifts to ensure our boys arrive early for matches and achieve success," an official said. Motorbikes are a popular mode of transport in many west African countries with the purchase and running of cars beyond the financial reach of most citizens. Djoliba, who lost 4-3 on aggregate to AC Leopards of Congo Brazzaville in the 2012 Confederation Cup final, want to emulate arch rivals Stade, surprise winners of the trophy three years earlier. However, just getting past the two-round qualifying stage in the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, poses challenges for Djoliba. Their first opponents, on consecutive weekends in September, will be African debutants Abia Warriors, who finished third in the highly competitive Nigeria Premier Football League. Should Djoliba win that two-leg tie, they will meet the winners of another west African derby, between USFA of Burkina Faso and AS Gbohloe-Su des Lacs of Togo, for a place in the group phase. Cash boost Being among the 16 qualifiers for the mini-leagues guarantees each club $400,000 (€345,000), with the prize money progressively rising to $2mn for the winners. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) last season responded to numerous complaints about the high cost of competing in continental competitions by giving qualifying-phase losers $50,000 each. This has been doubled to $100,000 for the forthcoming campaign -- a huge boost given travel and accommodation costs in a continent where flight options are limited and relatively expensive. While Djoliba dream of glory, the odds are that the 2025-26 Confederation Cup winners will come from one of four north African countries -- Algeria, Egypt, Morocco or Tunisia. Clubs from those nations have won 17 of the 22 editions, led by Renaissance Berkane of Morocco and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia with three titles each. Berkane will not defend a title won last May with a 3-1 overall victory over Simba of Tanzania as they will make a maiden appearance in the CAF Champions League instead. Twice winners Zamalek of Egypt, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, 2023 title-holders USM Alger and fellow Algerians Chabab Belouizdad are among the clubs who could succeed Berkane.
