Wrexham opens next season against ex-Premier League side Southampton

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Wrexham will play relegated Premier League team Southampton in its opening game of the season.
Wrexham will begin its first campaign in 43 years in English soccer's second tier away at St Mary's on Aug. 9.
The Welsh team has enjoyed a spectacular rise under celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Just two years ago, Wrexham was playing non-league soccer in England's fifth tier.
After three straight promotions, it is one tier below the Premier League and faces a Southampton team that was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal last season.
The game will be screened live in the U.K., another sign of the growing interest in Wrexham.
Fixtures for the second-tier Championship were published on Thursday. Wrexham plays former Premier League champion Leicester on Sept. 30.
It plays Ipswich, also relegated from the top flight last season, on Nov. 22 and Sheffield United on Boxing Day.
The Championship is renowned as one of the toughest divisions in soccer. That was illustrated last season when Luton — in the Premier League a year before — dropped down to the third tier after back-to-back relegations.

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn signs a 1-year deal to stay with his only NHL team

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has signed a one-year contract to stay with the only team he has played for in his 16 NHL seasons. 'Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,' general manager Jim Nill said Thursday. The deal has a base salary of $1 million, plus an additional $3 million in potential performance bonuses. This past season was the end of Benn's $76 million, eight-year contract extension. "There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season," Nill said. "We are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.' Hall of Fame center Mike Modano is the only player in franchise history with more than Benn's 1,192 regular-season games, 399 goals and 956 points. He has played in 120 postseason games. Benn, who turns 36 on July 18, had 16 goals and 33 assists in 80 regular-season games. It was the 13th time in his career to be over 40 points in a season, though he had only one goal and two assists in Dallas' 18 postseason games. The Stars have been to the Western Conference final three seasons in a row but haven't been to the Stanley Cup Final since 2020. Their only Stanley Cup title was in 1999. ___

What could Barry bring to Everton?

Everton have reportedly entered negotiations with Villarreal to sign France Under-21 striker Thierno Barry. A Premier League move at the age of 22 would cement Barry's rapid rise in European football in recent seasons. Only three years ago, he completed his first season of senior football in France's fifth tier before moving to Belgian second-tier side Beveren in July 2022. Advertisement Twenty goals in 28 starts were enough to earn a move to Swiss Super League side Basel a year later and he subsequently finished as the club's top scorer on 12 goals in his first campaign of top-flight football. A flurry of eight goals in the first four matches of 2024-25 convinced Villarreal to pay €15m (£12.7m) for his services in August. The 6ft 5in striker was an instant success, scoring 11 goals to help the Yellow Submarine finish fifth with their highest points tally in 17 years and qualify for the Champions League. Barry was in an elite group of players aged under 23 to score 10 or more goals in Europe's top five leagues this season, sitting alongside the likes of Leipzig's in-demand Benjamin Sesko, PSG's Bradley Barcola and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. Barry's height makes him a huge threat in the air and he ranked second of all forwards in Europe's major leagues (and top of anyone in La Liga) for aerial duel success in 2024-25, winning 66.7% of his 153 challenges (minimum 100 aerial duels). [BBC] It is a facet of Barry's game that has undoubtedly attracted Everton boss David Moyes, whose sides typically get lots of crosses into the box. The Toffees ranked seventh for open-play crosses in this season's Premier League, although they struggled to convert crosses into goals, scoring just three times from such situations – the fewest of any club other than Chelsea (2).

Minnesota Timberwolves will make the first selection of the second round of the NBA draft

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA draft resumes Thursday night with the Minnesota Timberwolves making the first selection of the second round. The draft picks up where it left off at Barclays Center in Brooklyn — though in a much smaller portion of it than was used Wednesday for the first round. The second round begins with the No. 31 pick and this year runs through No. 59 instead of 60, with the New York Knicks having been penalized their selection for tampering by negotiating with Jalen Brunson too soon before eventually signing the guard away from Dallas in 2022. The NBA points to the success of players such as Brunson, who became an All-NBA selection in New York, and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic of Denver when touting the types of difference-makers who could come out of the second round. The Mavericks, who selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick on Wednesday, do not currently have a selection in Round 2. The NBA began a two-night format for the draft last year after doing it one night ended too late. ___ AP NBA: recommended
