Hindustan Times23-04-2025

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLA will be offered in new colours like aqua mint and clear blue metallic.
Mercedes-Benz has listed the 2025 CLA Electric on the Indian website shortly after launching it globally, pointing towards an imminent India-specific launch soon. The new-gen CLA from Mercedes-Benz comes forward with EQ Technology, showcasing a blended emphasis on sustainability and luxury. The maker claims the 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric as the cleverest car they've ever made.
Internationally, the CLA is being offered with both electric and high-tech hybrid drivetrain options. The Mercedes-Benz CLA is the first offering in a new family of vehicles built on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture, offering a blend of performance, innovation and practicality for a range of users. Mercedes-Benz CLA: Design and interior
The CLA features a contemporary and athletic exterior, characterised by gently contoured surfaces. Its new illuminated grille, adorned with 142 LED stars, enhances its modern aesthetic, while the distinct star-shaped headlights and taillights amplify its presence on the road.
Inside, the cabin boasts a minimalist design centred around three high-tech elements: the optional MBUX Superscreen, a floating centre console, and leather-wrapped door panels. The panoramic roof, standard on all models, contributes to an airy feel and offers increased headroom. New material choices, such as open-pore wood and anodised finishes, elevate the vehicle's ambience. The all-electric CLA variants available internationally, including the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC, are powered by an 85 kWh battery pack. The CLA 250+ model boasts a range of up to 792 kilometres (WLTP), while the CLA 350 4MATIC features a 260 kW motor, making it the performance-oriented option. These electric models achieve a claimed 40 per cent reduction in carbon emissions during production compared to previous versions. Thanks to the 800-volt charging system, drivers can replenish their vehicle's range by 325 kilometres in just 10 minutes.
The new CLA is equipped with a two-speed gearbox at the rear axle for primary drive. The first gear facilitates immediate acceleration, while the second gear enhances efficiency for greater range, enabling the car to reach its maximum speed.
In addition to electric models, Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce hybrid variants with advanced 48-volt technology later this year. These hybrids will offer electric-only driving modes and energy recovery systems, providing flexibility tailored to each driver's needs.

The new CLA is fitted with an array of safety and driving assistance technologies. Standard features include DISTRONIC Distance Assist, while optional comfort-oriented systems are part of the MB.DRIVE Assist package. These features encompass Lane Change Assist and Steering Assist, promoting advanced levels of autonomous driving with SAE Level 2 capabilities. Mercedes-Benz CLA: MB.OS and MBUX
Central to the new CLA is the cutting-edge operating system, MB.OS, designed for a more intelligent and seamless driving experience. It connects vehicles to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, enabling over-the-air updates for critical functions, including driving assistance systems. This ensures the CLA remains up to date with new features and enhancements throughout its lifespan.
The sedan also debuts Mercedes' fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system, which incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) from both Microsoft and Google. This collaboration allows for a more personalised and responsive user experience, capable of understanding complex voice commands and adapting to individual preferences. Furthermore, the AI-enhanced MBUX Virtual Assistant enables more nuanced and conversational interactions, assisting drivers with tasks ranging from navigation to various vehicle functions.

Weak demand for Mercedes G580 EV spurs plans for smaller G-Class with hybrid powertrain

The Mercedes G580 with EQ Technology is equipped with a substantial 116 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated range of 400 kilometers on a single charge. Check Offers Mercedes-Benz's ambitious entrance into the all-electric luxury SUV market with the G580 EQ evidently seems to be off to a rocky start. Since its April 2024 introduction, the all-electric G-Class has raised questions internally in the brand for sub par sales that have forced it to re-consider the futures of its electric off-roaders. Sales disappointment across regions As per a recent Handelsblatt report, top Mercedes officials have lashed out at the sales of the G580 as a "complete flop" and said that the model "sits like lead in dealers' showrooms." Since its launch, the G580 has sold just 1,450 units in Europe and a paltry 58 units in China, one of the most important EV markets for Mercedes. The situation isn't much better in Australia either, where just 156 G-Class units—including internal combustion versions—were sold until the end of May 2025. That's less than 2 per cent of Mercedes-Benz's total Australian sales and a 20.8 per cent drop compared to 2024. Also Read : India-exclusive Mercedes-AMG G 63 'Collector's Edition' set to launch on June 12 Mercedes rethinks its EV SUV strategy In response to this slow traction, Mercedes-Benz is now exploring the development of a smaller, more versatile G-Class model, internally referred to as the 'Little G'. Originally conceived as an EV-only vehicle, the new model will feature both electric and petrol-hybrid options for maximum flexibility across markets. This possible change is aided by the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which forms the basis for the next-generation CLA lineup. This platform enables smoother integration of multiple powertrain configurations, in contrast to the tailored EV platforms of the EQE and EQS—both of which have also been poorly selling. Claimed range of around 420 kms. #shorts The lukewarm reception to the G580 reminds us of the challenges that luxury players face while they transition towards electric mobility. For Mercedes-Benz, it's a blunt reminder that customer preference is hankering for diversity and versatility, but not full EV commitment as of yet. With the 'Little G' likely to have hybrid and electric versions, the company appears to be returning to reality checks—where performance, price, and utility are all relevant. One user wrote, "Of course yes, it's most convenient time saving by travelling in metro trains in very much congested cities like delhi, mumbai and Bangalore especially, instead of travelling by car or bus." Another commented, "Looks like you enjoyed your metro ride Revathi." The post also sparked interest due to its contrast with an earlier update where she received a luxury vehicle, a brand-new Mercedes, from her sons, Nikhil and Nithin Kamath, co-founders of Zerodha. In March 2025, Ms Kamath took to Facebook to share her joy, posting a heartwarming photo of herself holding the car keys. The car was a Mercedes-Benz GLS, renowned for its refined elegance, and a hefty price tag of approximately Rs 1.5 crore in India. Earlier, Biocon founder and billionaire Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw also took a metro ride, surprising commuters. She shared her experience on social media, praising the convenience and speed of the metro and thanking the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). She was accompanied on the ride by Jennifer Erich, whom she referred to as the "Iron Lady of Exxon Mobil". They took the Purple Line from Whitefield to Vidhana Soudha. Notably, Namma Metro is the rapid transit system serving the city of Bengaluru. "Namma" means "our" in Kannada, the local language. It's a convenient and efficient way to navigate the city, helping reduce traffic congestion. Currently, Namma Metro operates two lines: the purple line and the green line.
