Inseparable twin sisters diagnosed with breast cancer just six weeks apart

Daily Record11-08-2025
"I just thought I was double-checking that everything was alright and for that to happen to me it was just unbelievable."
Inseparable twin sisters have been diagnosed with breast cancer - within weeks of each other. Scottish sisters Amanda Mcinulty and Rhona Buchanan, 51, received the tragic news just six weeks apart from each other.

In January this year Rhona started noticing that something wasn't right with her left breast. Rhona broke the news to Amanda that she had breast cancer on FaceTime and she realised it was best if she get checked out too.

Just six weeks after Rhonda's diagnosis, Amanda revealed she also had breast cancer. In recent months both have undergone mastectomies on their left breasts.

They teamed up on TikTok to raise cancer awareness after both undergoing mastectomies. Amanda lives in in Burton-on-Trent and Rhona Buchanan in central Scotland.
Amanda said: "It has been an emotional journey for ourselves and our family and friends.

"With us being so close we have been able to support each other. And I think it has actually brought us closer."
Rhona added: "I appreciate the time that we spend together more."
Born just 14 minutes apart, the "inseparable" identical twins each have a son and a daughter, and even became grandmothers to two boys born. Thirty years ago Amanda moved to Burton-on-Trent but the sisters take every opportunity to meet up.

Amanda said: "We have always been close. We have never had a bad word to say about each other.
"I moved down south but we take every opportunity to meet up. We have a caravan in Carlisle it is quite a good central spot for us to meet up."
Rhona first noticed a change in her left breast in January 2025, which prompted her to visit her GP. She was then referred to the breast clinic to undergo an ultrasound and mammogram.

Rhona said: "I had noticed a change in my left breast - there was a dimpling. The doctor referred me to the breast clinic and after a mammogram and a ultrasound they said it was likely to be breast cancer.
"It was confirmed in the end of April when they said I had invasive lobular cancer. They thought it was multiple tumours but after a surgery they confirmed it was just one large tumour I had."

The shocking news was delivered to Amanda over FaceTime - who travelled to Scotland to support her sister. Amanda soon decided return south to do a mammogram screening.
She got a call back and a letter asking to go back to some further tests where she did a mammogram and an ultrasound. But six weeks later she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Rhona said: "Amanda went back to her appointment and the same thing happened. She Facetimed me from the hospital car park and told me she had breast cancer."

Amanda said the sisters "could not believe" what was happening and that it was "ironic" that the cancer was also in the left breast.
She said: "I had no symptoms. It was just your routine breast screening after you're age 50 you get invited for breast screening and that's where it was picked up.

"I just thought I was double-checking that everything was alright and for that to happen to me it was just unbelievable."
Amanda's cancer was identified as invasive ductal cancer. She was offered a lumpectomy but chose a full mastectomy instead. Rhona completed radiotherapy a few weeks ago and she is on a hormone tablet called tamoxifen for 10 years.
With Amanda because she caught the cancer early the doctors managed to remove the cancer and she doesn't need radiotherapy or further treatment.

Amanda said: "It has been an emotional journey for ourselves and our family and friends.
"We being so close we have been able to support each other. I think it has actually bringing us closer."

Rhona added: "I appreciate the time that we spend together more."
The twins have even set up their own TikTok account where they share their cancer journeys on TikTok.
They have had many people reaching out to them asking for advice on breast cancer - including school friends that they have not seen for years. Thousands of views have been amounted in the sisters account @twintides0.

Rhona said: "I was at Amanda's and I think we were having a conversation about how unique it is the fact that the two of us have got breast cancer within two weeks of each other.
"We were encouraged by Amanda's husband and our son and daughter to documenting our journey in TikTok. We just try to be our authentic selves and just getting our message across."
Amanda added: "We have got friends and family both in England and Scotland and it was a way for both of us share what was going on without directly talking to them. Rhona is the brain's behind it.
"It has been a positive experience all around really just an act to take our minds off what's been happening. It has been something we can actually do together which has been fun."

Pilates focuses on strength training, especially the core, which helps tone the stomach. "As somebody who has lost and gained a lot of weight three times, twice from having children and I've had two caesareans, I can honestly say Pilates, after the fat loss, is what has really toned up my stomach and build it out with definition and muscle," Bethanie added. "Almost everything is working your core and it focuses a lot on breathing and I don't think we realise, generally speaking, how important breathing is to activate and engage your core, your deep core properly." The best part is that Bethanie didn't have to leave the house to get her workout done as she used online pilate workouts on YouTube. Bethanie added in the comments section that the only other form of workouts she did to lose weight and maintain was to make sure she got 10,000 steps in a day. One person wrote: "I did my first Pilates with Izzy this morning after your recommendation and loved it, I'm looking forward to getting up early and doing day 2. Thank you for inspiring me." Another commented: "You've inspired me to do at-home Pilates. The fact you do most things from home just proves you don't need the best membership to get these goals like I always thought you did. I hate going to the gym." "Me too! Lost 13kgs doing Pilates only and just recently joined the gym as I hit a bit of a plateau so needed to ramp it up a bit," penned a third. The street where the Longs have lived since 2020 is known for being residential and friendly, as families often gather outside and children meet up to play together in the cul-de-sac. Residents were rattled by the news of the deadly shooting. Neighbor Beverly Ketel, who is watching the family's two dogs after the tragedy, told CBS affiliate WBZ-TV that she was shocked by the tragedy. "It was a perfect family as far as we knew," Ketel told the outlet. "It's just shocking. We didn't see it coming." Calls for more urgency over need for new medical centre in West Lothian village

Built to serve just 4,500 it is now responsible for 16,000 patients Livingston's MP has accused the Scottish Government of squandering opportunities to improve health services in a West Lothian village. ‌ Labour's Gregor Poynton MP was joined by Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar alongside other party members in East Calder where he highlighted the urgent need for a new medical centre to serve the growing community. ‌ West Lothian Council Leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick and Jordan Stokoe, who will be the Labour candidate for Almond Valley in next year's Scottish Parliament election, were also amongst the delegation that toured the current facility with Practice Manager Thanos Keramidas. They heard first-hand how staff and patients are being impacted by overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure. ‌ Built to serve 4,500 patients, East Calder Medical Centre is now responsible for 16,000 people - a figure projected to rise to 19,600 by 2028. Also present was Pauline Cowan from the East Calder Medical Centre Campaign Group, who outlined the community's ongoing pressure on the Scottish Government and NHS Lothian to deliver the long-promised new facility. Campaigners warn that without investment, the situation will only worsen. Gregor Poynton MP said: 'This UK Labour Government is delivering the largest budgetary settlement in the history of devolution with an extra £9.1 billion for Scottish public services. Yet the SNP Scottish Government continues to squander opportunity after opportunity and waste public money. 'Nearly five years ago, the SNP's Angela Constance called for 'further and faster' progress towards a new medical centre for East Calder. Five years later, nothing has happened. That's five years of failure for local people. We cannot give the SNP Scottish Government another five years to fail again.' ‌ The Scottish Government say they are reviewing capital spending following 'historic real terms cuts' to its block grant from the UK Government. Jordan Stokoe also criticised the Scottish Government over the current facilities, saying: 'I have yet to hear from anyone that disputes East Calder desperately needs larger and better GP facilities. I've worked on many projects in my career and I see that the centre team have squeezed every single thing they can out of the current building. "There is no more to give. The result is more wasteful spending to keep the centre from bursting at the seams all while the pressure continues to build as more and more people move into the area. ‌ 'The neglect being shown to the people of East Calder, Mid Calder, Calderwood, Kirknewton and Wilkieston is unacceptable. As it stands, it's only the SNP Scottish Government that can make the decision to push ahead. Everyone else is ready to do what it takes, so it's time to make them listen.' A spokesperson for the Scottish Government said: 'Historic real terms cuts to our block grant from the UK Government have put pressure on our capital budget and we have only recently received clarity from the UK Treasury for our capital and FT funding up to 2029-30. 'As part of our own Scottish Spending Review, we are undertaking a full review of our capital spending to prioritise available funding towards projects that drive progress against our priorities. We will provide clarity over which projects will receive funding in the medium term when we publish this review, alongside our new Infrastructure Pipeline.'
