Delhi Police bust interstate auto theft syndicate, recover eight high end cars

Hans India6 days ago

The Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted an interstate syndicate involved in the theft and resale of high-end vehicles, a statement said on Friday.
The gang used a sophisticated modus operandi to sell stolen cars through online platforms by forging documents, opening bank accounts with fake identities, and tampering with engine and chassis numbers.
In a series of coordinated operations, the police arrested a key member of the gang and recovered eight luxury vehicles.
According to Delhi Police, the breakthrough came with the arrest of Rakesh Patel alias Pappu (38), a core operative of the syndicate, near Sahibabad Railway Station in Ghaziabad on April 21, 2025.
Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended him while he was attempting to sell a stolen Maruti Wagon-R via an online platform.
Patel, a resident of Sahibabad, Ghaziabad (UP), and originally from Mohiuddin Nagar, Samastipur (Bihar), played a central role in managing theft operations and delivering stolen vehicles across states.
His associates arranged vehicles, counterfeit documents, and fake number plates.
The gang's method was notably elaborate. After stealing a car, they searched online car-selling portals for vehicles of the same make, model, and colour.
Using open-source information, they identified details of genuine owners and forged documents in the owner's name -- featuring the photograph of one of the accused. They also opened bank accounts using these fake identities.
To avoid detection, the syndicate would tamper with the stolen car's engine and chassis numbers to match those of the legitimate vehicle. Fake Registration Certificates (RCs) were then prepared, making the stolen car appear genuine. Once the vehicle was thus 'cloned,' it was listed for sale on online platforms.
The syndicate targeted high-demand vehicles, often choosing cars parked in low-surveillance or roadside areas. The police noted the gang's use of advanced technological tools to support their operations.
A team led by Inspector Arun Sindhu of the Crime Branch spearheaded the investigation, which led to the arrest and recovery of the stolen vehicles.

Three arrested from Mewat in sextortion racket that duped Delhi man of Rs 14 lakh

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested three fraudsters from Rajasthan's Mewat for running a sextortion racket that extorted Rs 14 lakh from a man in the capital. The accused posed as Crime Branch officers, manipulated the victim into a compromising situation during a WhatsApp video call, and then used the footage to blackmail him over several days. According to police, the accused contacted the complainant via WhatsApp video call and played a pre-recorded obscene video featuring a woman. "The complainant told police officers that he was manipulated into getting nude, and subsequently, his video was recorded. The complainant later received three obscene videos of himself, which were recorded by the fraudster. Later, the complainant received a WhatsApp call from someone who identified himself as a Crime Branch officer," DCP (west) Vichitra Veer said. The caller threatened to register a case of sexual harassment against the complainant, falsely claiming that the woman in the video was a minor and that the victim's phone was under surveillance. "The fraudsters initially demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for deletion of the video, followed by further demands of Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. In a final extortion attempt, the accused claimed the girl committed suicide and threatened the victim with arrest unless he paid an additional Rs 6 lakh. Under pressure, the complainant transferred the entire amount across these intervals, totalling around Rs 14 lakh," DCP Veer added. Through technical surveillance and analysis of the money trail, a police team tracked the suspects to the Mewat region, specifically Sikri in Deeg district, Rajasthan. "The first raid was conducted at the residence of accused Vasim (30), and a subsequent raid led to the arrest of Javed (48) also in Deeg. During interrogation, the two disclosed the involvement of a third accomplice, Khalid (23)," a senior police officer said. Police said Khalid was the individual who made the original video call to the complainant and recorded the footage. He also impersonated the Crime Branch officer to carry out the extortion.

Delhi Police arrest Maharashtra Home Guard who conned women on matrimonial website

An employee with the Home Guard Department in Maharashtra, who allegedly deceived innocent women on the pretext of marriage through a matrimonial website, was arrested by the Delhi Police on Wednesday. The accused, Nagesh Arjun Pawar, a 29-year-old resident of Mumbai, was found siphoning off money from unsuspecting victims by promising them marriage, according to police reports. Six complaints registered on various cybercrime portals have been linked to the same modus operandi. Investigations are ongoing to identify other victims and ascertain the full extent of his cyber crimes, the police said. The case came to light after a woman filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal alleging that she was defrauded of Rs 20 lakh by a man posing as Vishal Bhosle. The complainant had created a profile on the matrimonial website and was contacted by Bhosle, who claimed to work at Morgan Stanley, a multinational financial services company, in Worli, Mumbai. He also convinced her that he owned a 50 per cent stake in Adventure Water Sports and Mansion Sahara Star Club. According to the Delhi Police, Bhosle would ask the woman for money under the guise of various emergencies, including hospital admissions, car accidents, and mobile phone purchases, as their relationship progressed. The transactions eventually amounted to Rs 20 lakh, the woman stated to the police. Upon realising that the woman had been deceived, she reported the matter online, which led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and a subsequent investigation. 'During the investigation, the details of the accounts of the complainant were obtained from the bank. On the basis of information obtained from the bank and technical analysis, we located the accused at Kandivali East in Mumbai. Accordingly, a raid was conducted at the hideout and one accused, namely Nagesh Arjun Pawar, was arrested,' said Rajiv Ranjan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rohini. According to the police, Pawar allegedly confessed to creating a fake identity using fabricated photos and details under the name Vishal Bhosle on the matrimonial site. He admitted to coercing the complainant into transferring funds and even acquiring a credit card in her name, which he used for his luxuries. He revealed that the money received was used to sustain a lavish lifestyle.

Delhi man under ‘digital arrest' duped of Rs 14 lakh, 3 cyber fraudsters held from Rajasthan

The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested three cyber fraudsters who allegedly posed as Crime Branch officials and extorted Rs 14 lakh from an individual, who was placed under 'digital arrest', and blackmailed with his nude photos. The three accused — Vasim, 30, and Javed, 48, and Khalid — were arrested from their residences in Rajasthan's Mewar region, the Delhi Police said. The police said that the racket came to light when the complainant approached the Delhi Police, claiming that he had been duped by fraudsters who recorded his nudes on a WhatsApp call. 'During the call, an obscene video of a girl started playing, and she manipulated the complainant into getting nude, subsequently recording his video. The complainant, later, received three obscene videos of himself, which had been recorded by the fraudster,' Vichitra Veer, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West, said. The victim told the police that a man claiming to be from the Crime Branch then contacted him over WhatsApp and told him that the girl he had talked to was a minor and that his phone was tracked by the police. To get away with the 'crime', the caller asked the complainant to pay Rs 1.5 lakh initially and then called him twice to blackmail him into giving an additional Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. The complainant gave in to the demand. 'The complainant stated that the fraudster called again and threatened that the girl had committed suicide and that the complainant would be arrested. He further demanded ₹6 lakh for 'settling' the case, which the complainant also transferred,' DCP Veer said. After losing Rs 14 lakh, the complainant approached the cyber police station. Investigators traced the accounts to which the money was transferred, leading them to Mewat, a known cybercrime hub. Following this, the police raided the houses of Vasim and Javed in the Deeg district of Rajasthan and arrested them. During interrogation, Vasim revealed that Khalid had recorded the nude videos and impersonated a Crime Branch officer. 'A raid was conducted at Khalid's residence, and he was apprehended too,' DCP Veer said. All three men were formally arrested on Wednesday after questioning. A police officer noted that typically, users of mule accounts are unaware of the main suspects in digital arrest schemes; they are usually tasked with siphoning off money from the account and transferring it to another. 'However, in this case, the suspects knew each other as they were all working together. This facilitated to nab the main accused swiftly,' the officer said.
