Police bust interstate auto robbery syndicate, recover 8 high-end cars

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted an interstate syndicate involved in the theft and resale of high-end vehicles, a statement said on Friday. The gang used a sophisticated modus operandi to sell stolen cars through online platforms by forging documents, opening bank accounts with fake identities, and tampering with engine and chassis numbers. In a series of coordinated operations, the police arrested a key member of the gang and recovered eight luxury vehicles. According to Delhi Police, the breakthrough came with the arrest of Rakesh Patel alias Pappu (38), a core operative of the syndicate, near Sahibabad Railway Station in Ghaziabad on April 21, 2025. Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended him while he was attempting to sell a stolen Maruti Wagon-R via an online platform. Patel, a resident of Sahibabad, Ghaziabad (UP), and originally from Mohiuddin Nagar, Samastipur (Bihar), played a central role in managing theft operations and delivering stolen vehicles across states. His associates arranged vehicles, counterfeit documents, and fake number plates. The gang's method was notably elaborate. After stealing a car, they searched online car-selling portals for vehicles of the same make, model, and colour. Using open-source information, they identified details of genuine owners and forged documents in the owner's name -- featuring the photograph of one of the accused. They also opened bank accounts using these fake identities. To avoid detection, the syndicate would tamper with the stolen car's engine and chassis numbers to match those of the legitimate vehicle. Fake Registration Certificates (RCs) were then prepared, making the stolen car appear genuine. Once the vehicle was thus 'cloned,' it was listed for sale on online platforms. The syndicate targeted high-demand vehicles, often choosing cars parked in low-surveillance or roadside areas. The police noted the gang's use of advanced technological tools to support their operations. A team led by Inspector Arun Sindhu of the Crime Branch spearheaded the investigation, which led to the arrest and recovery of the stolen vehicles.

It's one blow after another for Reds: Chief of banned CPI-maoist splinter bloc gunned down in Jharkhand

RANCHI/DALTONGANT: Pappu Lohra, chief of Maoist splinter outfit Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), was shot dead on Saturday during a gunfight with cops in Latehar district's Ichabar area along with his second-in-command Prabhat Ganjhu. The duo's elimination comes amid an intensified crackdown on Maoists that led to the killing of CPI (Maoist) chief Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basavaraju, on Wednesday along with 26 other rebels in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur. "He (Pappu) was a former Maoist and had good tactical skills. The way he was neutralised shows that ultras have very little time and space left for themselves. With Pappu's death, the outfit has virtually collapsed," Sunil Bhaskar, IG (Palamu Range), said. Police said a squad led by Pappu had gathered in Ichabar forests to plan attacks on local contractors and builders when they were surrounded. "Pappu was asked to surrender but he did not and was killed. He had three dozen criminal cases in various police stations," a police source said. Pappu and Prabhat were residents of Latehar. SP Kumar Gaurav said Pappu carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh and Ganjhu Rs 5 lakh. Ashish Kumar, another JJMP operative, was found injured at the site. A cop, Awadh Singh, was also wounded in the encounter and has been admitted to a hospital in Ranchi, around 120km away. Later in the day, junior Union defence minister Sanjay Seth met Awadh Singh in hospital. "Anti-Naxal operations are underway in different parts of the country. The menace is on the wane due to sustained efforts of our security forces," Seth said. According to Jharkhand police, offensives have been stepped up against several breakaway rebel outfits. "Apart from Maoists, Jharkhand police are conducting intensive operations against splinter groups which include People Liberation Front of India (PLFI), Tiritya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) and JJMP," IG (operations) Amol Homkar said. PLFI supremo Dinesh Gope was arrested earlier in May 2023. TSPC chief Brajesh is inactive, while outfit's de-facto top gun Akraman Ganjhu was arrested in March, police sources pointed out. Many in Jharkhand police viewed Pappu's elimination on Saturday as his comeuppance for the killing of Rajesh Kumar, a deputy commandant, in an encounter with a squad led by the JJMP chief in Latehar in 2021.

Major splinter groups now headless: Police

Ranchi: With Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) chief Pappu Lohra's death in Latehar on Saturday, security forces in the state have managed to either arrest or eliminate all heads of major LWE splinter groups which are active in Jharkhand. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The state police are conducting intensive operations against the splinter groups which include the People Liberation Front of India (PLFI), Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) and the JJMP. The director general of police, Anurag Gupta, has directed that emphasis should be on eradicating the splinter groups from the state as well," IG (operations) Amol Homkar said. Pappu's death could be the end of JJMP with many of its operatives laying down their arms under the state govt' surrender policy. Now, JJMP is restricted to less than 30 members in Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Ranchi and Palamu districts. Police are also considering the death of Pappu as a salute to martyred Jharkhand Jaguar deputy commandant Rajesh Kumar who was killed in an encounter with a squad led Pappu in Latehar in 2021. On May 2023, PLFI supremo Dinesh Gope was arrested. Moreover, police said, Brajesh, the chief of TSPC, is inactive and they have arrested the outfit's leader Akraman Ganjhu in March this year. Union minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth visited the private hospital in Ranchi where a jawan, Awadh Singh, injured in Saturday's encounter, is undergoing treatment. "Anti-Naxal operations are underway across the country and this menace is on the wane due to the efforts of our security forces," Seth said.

Wanted JJMP chief, aide gunned down in Latehar

Daltonganj: Police gunned down Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) chief Pappu Lohra and the outfit's second-in-command Prabhat Ganjhu in a gunfight in Ichabar locality under the Latehar police station on Saturday morning. JJMP is a Naxalite group which broke away from the Maoists. Pappu and Prabhat were both residents of Latehar district. Kumar Gaurav, Latehar SP, said Lohra and Ganjhu were killed in a retaliatory firing. "Pappu carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh while Ganjhu carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh," he said. Ashish Kumar, another injured JJMP operative, was found in the bushes in Ichabar and was being treated in police custody. Awadh Singh, a cop from the district police, sustained injuries to his shoulder and was referred to a Ranchi hospital where he was said to be stable. In the operation, which was conducted by the district police, an Insas rifle, 20 empty cartridges, two magazine pouches, a motorcycle, three backpacks, a shoulder bag and a tarpaulin sheet were recovered. Police said that a squad, led by Pappu, had gathered at Ichabar to attack local contractors and builders when they were surrounded. "Pappu was asked to surrender but he did not and was killed. He had three dozen criminal cases in different police stations. The death of Pappu and Prabhat is an irreparable loss to the outfit," a source said. "He was a former Maoist and had good tactical skills. The way he was neutralised shows that ultras have very little time and space left for themselves. With Pappu's death, the outfit virtually collapsed," Sunil Bhaskar, IG Palamu, said. Insiders said Pappu had carried a larger-than-life image of himself. "He thought of himself as invincible but trusted no one. He loved "jalebis" and when his men would arrange the sweet for him, Pappu was the last one to eat as he suspected he could be poisoned," a source close to the outfit requesting anonymity said.
