The duo's elimination comes amid an intensified crackdown on Maoists that led to the killing of CPI (Maoist) chief Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basavaraju, on Wednesday along with 26 other rebels in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur.
"He (Pappu) was a former Maoist and had good tactical skills. The way he was neutralised shows that ultras have very little time and space left for themselves. With Pappu's death, the outfit has virtually collapsed," Sunil Bhaskar, IG (Palamu Range), said.
Police said a squad led by Pappu had gathered in Ichabar forests to plan attacks on local contractors and builders when they were surrounded. "Pappu was asked to surrender but he did not and was killed. He had three dozen criminal cases in various police stations," a police source said.
Pappu and Prabhat were residents of Latehar. SP Kumar Gaurav said Pappu carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh and Ganjhu Rs 5 lakh.
Ashish Kumar, another JJMP operative, was found injured at the site.

Later in the day, junior Union defence minister Sanjay Seth met Awadh Singh in hospital. "Anti-Naxal operations are underway in different parts of the country. The menace is on the wane due to sustained efforts of our security forces," Seth said.
According to Jharkhand police, offensives have been stepped up against several breakaway rebel outfits.
"Apart from Maoists, Jharkhand police are conducting intensive operations against splinter groups which include People Liberation Front of India (PLFI), Tiritya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) and JJMP," IG (operations) Amol Homkar said.
PLFI supremo Dinesh Gope was arrested earlier in May 2023. TSPC chief Brajesh is inactive, while outfit's de-facto top gun Akraman Ganjhu was arrested in March, police sources pointed out.
Many in Jharkhand police viewed Pappu's elimination on Saturday as his comeuppance for the killing of Rajesh Kumar, a deputy commandant, in an encounter with a squad led by the JJMP chief in Latehar in 2021.

New DELHI: India on Tuesday gave the final nod for acquisition of another 97 indigenous Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft or "eyes in the sky", collectively worth around Rs 85,500 crore, which will be crucial to tackle the collusive and 'fused' challenge from China-Pakistan in the years ahead. The PM-led cabinet committee on security (CCS) approved the Rs 66,500 crore deal for 97 "improved" Tejas Mark-1A fighters to be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which will add to the 83 such single-engine light combat aircraft already ordered from defence PSU under a Rs 46,898 crore deal inked in Feb 2021, top sources told TOI. T'puram: The order passed by the Supreme Court on Monday to resolve the impasse over the selection and appointment of vice-chancellors (VC) at Kerala Technological University and Kerala University of Digital Sciences has turned out to be a huge setback for the governor. SC decided not to include the UGC nominee in the search committee and empowered the chief minister with unprecedented authority to decide candidates. As per the order, the search committee, headed by a retired SC judge, must share the details of shortlisted candidates with the CM, who will recommend them to the chancellor, in order of preference, for appointment as VCs. The chancellor shall then appoint VCs from the empanelled names, following the CM's recommended order of preference. If the chancellor has reservations against empanelled candidates or against the CM's remarks on shortlisted candidates, he can put forth his opinion on file, supported by reasons and relevant material, the SC order said. The order said that the chancellor shall give approval—except in case of a difference of opinion—within two weeks of receiving the file from the CM. "The department of higher education, Government of Kerala or any other department concerned of the state govt are hereby directed to notify the appointment within one week from the date of receipt of approval from the chancellor of the university," it said. How is Noida tackling waste discharge into Yamuna? SC orders review
Noida: The Supreme Court has asked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to verify the remediation measures claimed by Noida Authority and Delhi Jal Board, respectively, in controlling sewer discharge into the Yamuna through Kondli irrigation canal. The division bench, comprising justices Manoj Mishra and Ujjal Bhuyan, directed the two panels to file their reports within six weeks. The apex court was reviewing the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) imposition of a Rs 150 crore environmental compensation on the Authority and Delhi Jal Board. In Aug 2022, the tribunal had imposed environmental compensations of Rs 100 crore on Noida Authority and Rs 50 crore on DJB for their failure to check sewage inflow into Kondli canal, which eventually empties into the Yamuna.
