It's one blow after another for Reds: Chief of banned CPI-maoist splinter bloc gunned down in Jharkhand
The duo's elimination comes amid an intensified crackdown on Maoists that led to the killing of CPI (Maoist) chief Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basavaraju, on Wednesday along with 26 other rebels in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur.
"He (Pappu) was a former Maoist and had good tactical skills. The way he was neutralised shows that ultras have very little time and space left for themselves. With Pappu's death, the outfit has virtually collapsed," Sunil Bhaskar, IG (Palamu Range), said.
Police said a squad led by Pappu had gathered in Ichabar forests to plan attacks on local contractors and builders when they were surrounded. "Pappu was asked to surrender but he did not and was killed. He had three dozen criminal cases in various police stations," a police source said.
Pappu and Prabhat were residents of Latehar. SP Kumar Gaurav said Pappu carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh and Ganjhu Rs 5 lakh.
Ashish Kumar, another JJMP operative, was found injured at the site.

He has been hospitalised in police custody. A cop, Awadh Singh, was also wounded in the encounter and has been admitted to a hospital in Ranchi, around 120km away.
Later in the day, junior Union defence minister Sanjay Seth met Awadh Singh in hospital. "Anti-Naxal operations are underway in different parts of the country. The menace is on the wane due to sustained efforts of our security forces," Seth said.
According to Jharkhand police, offensives have been stepped up against several breakaway rebel outfits.
"Apart from Maoists, Jharkhand police are conducting intensive operations against splinter groups which include People Liberation Front of India (PLFI), Tiritya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) and JJMP," IG (operations) Amol Homkar said.
PLFI supremo Dinesh Gope was arrested earlier in May 2023. TSPC chief Brajesh is inactive, while outfit's de-facto top gun Akraman Ganjhu was arrested in March, police sources pointed out.
Many in Jharkhand police viewed Pappu's elimination on Saturday as his comeuppance for the killing of Rajesh Kumar, a deputy commandant, in an encounter with a squad led by the JJMP chief in Latehar in 2021.

Acquisition of another 97 Tejas, 6 AEW&C aircraft gets CCS nod
New DELHI: India on Tuesday gave the final nod for acquisition of another 97 indigenous Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft or "eyes in the sky", collectively worth around Rs 85,500 crore, which will be crucial to tackle the collusive and 'fused' challenge from China-Pakistan in the years ahead. The PM-led cabinet committee on security (CCS) approved the Rs 66,500 crore deal for 97 "improved" Tejas Mark-1A fighters to be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which will add to the 83 such single-engine light combat aircraft already ordered from defence PSU under a Rs 46,898 crore deal inked in Feb 2021, top sources told TOI. "The first two jets of the 83 ordered earlier are fully ready. The final weapons firing trials (including Astra air-to-air missiles) are slated for Sept. With the order for another 97 jets, HAL will be able to expand and stabilise its supply chains," a source said. Faced with flak from IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh for huge delays in deliveries, HAL has promised to progressively scale up production to 20 Tejas per year, and then to 24-30 per year, with the third production line now fully functional in Nashik to add to the two existing ones at Bengaluru, apart from private sector supply chains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Compliance Easy With These Identity Governance Tools AskLayers Learn More Undo The project for six AEW&C aircraft, which will entail mounting active electronically scanned array antenna-based radars, electronic and signal intelligence systems on second-hand Airbus-321 planes bought earlier from Air India, in turn, will cost Rs 19,000 crore. "All six AEW&C aircraft will be delivered by 2033-34," the source said. Timely induction of the 180 Tejas Mark-1A fighters is needed to stem rapid depletion in the number of IAF fighter squadrons (each has 16-18 jets), which will go down to its lowest-ever figure of 29 squadrons next month after retirement of the 36 old MiG-21s still in service. IAF, incidentally, is authorised 42.5 combat squadrons. Pakistan now has 25 fighter squadrons, and is slated to get at least 40 J-35A fifth-generation stealth jets from China in the near future. China, of course, has more than four times the number of fighters, bombers and force-multipliers as compared to India. In the AEW&C arena, which are required to boost surveillance capabilities along the borders as well as help direct friendly fighters during air combat with enemy jets, India lags far behind even Pakistan. IAF currently has just three Netra AEW&C Mark-1 planes, with indigenous sensors mounted on Brazilian Embraer-145 jets for 240-degree radar coverage, and three Israeli 'Phalcon' radars mounted on Russian IL-76 aircraft. The new AEW&C project will involve the A-321 narrow-body aircraft first being "hardened and modified" in Spain and then being equipped with an antenna in the nose in addition to the main dorsal antenna to give 300-degree radar coverage. To make up numbers, defence ministry in March also accorded the initial "acceptance of necessity" to a separate project for six Netra Mark-1A on Embraer-145 jets, with more advanced technologies than the first three Mark-1 aircraft. On the Tejas front, IAF till now has got 38 of the first 40 Tejas Mark-1 fighters ordered for Rs 8,802 crore under two contracts inked in 2006 and 2010.

SC curbs Kerala governor's authority in VC selection, empowers CM
T'puram: The order passed by the Supreme Court on Monday to resolve the impasse over the selection and appointment of vice-chancellors (VC) at Kerala Technological University and Kerala University of Digital Sciences has turned out to be a huge setback for the governor. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It has almost stripped him of his authority as chancellor of universities in Kerala — except National University of Advanced Legal Studies, where the high court's chief justice serves as chancellor. SC decided not to include the UGC nominee in the search committee and empowered the chief minister with unprecedented authority to decide candidates. As per the order, the search committee, headed by a retired SC judge, must share the details of shortlisted candidates with the CM, who will recommend them to the chancellor, in order of preference, for appointment as VCs. The chancellor shall then appoint VCs from the empanelled names, following the CM's recommended order of preference. If the chancellor has reservations against empanelled candidates or against the CM's remarks on shortlisted candidates, he can put forth his opinion on file, supported by reasons and relevant material, the SC order said. The order said that the chancellor shall give approval—except in case of a difference of opinion—within two weeks of receiving the file from the CM. "The department of higher education, Government of Kerala or any other department concerned of the state govt are hereby directed to notify the appointment within one week from the date of receipt of approval from the chancellor of the university," it said. Until now, the chancellor was the appointing authority and the order was issued from Raj Bhavan. "In cases where the CM has objected to the inclusion of any name in the panel and such objection is not acceptable to the chancellor or where the chancellor has an objection against the empanelment of any particular name for which he has assigned his own reasons, all such files shall be put up before this court. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We make it clear that a final decision in this regard shall be taken by this court after giving a reasonable opportunity of being heard to objectors," said the SC bench. The apex court appointed former SC judge Sudhanshu Dhulia as chairperson of the search-cum-selection committee for both universities and ordered that he be paid an honorarium of Rs 3 lakh for every day of the committee's proceedings until completion. The state shall also provide him with a suitable office, full secretarial assistance, transit accommodation and reimburse his business-class air travel expenses.

How is Noida tackling waste discharge into Yamuna? SC orders review
Noida: The Supreme Court has asked the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to verify the remediation measures claimed by Noida Authority and Delhi Jal Board, respectively, in controlling sewer discharge into the Yamuna through Kondli irrigation canal. The division bench, comprising justices Manoj Mishra and Ujjal Bhuyan, directed the two panels to file their reports within six weeks. The apex court was reviewing the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) imposition of a Rs 150 crore environmental compensation on the Authority and Delhi Jal Board. In Aug 2022, the tribunal had imposed environmental compensations of Rs 100 crore on Noida Authority and Rs 50 crore on DJB for their failure to check sewage inflow into Kondli canal, which eventually empties into the Yamuna. It was stayed by Supreme Court in Nov that year. The matter is to be heard next on Oct 10. Environment activist Abhisht Kusum Gupta, who had initiated the legal battle to clean Kondli canal in Nov 2018, said Noida Authority has submitted that of 30 drains emptying into the irrigation canal, six have dried up. Of the remaining 24, five have been tapped, leaving 19 to be addressed. "They have prepared a detailed project report for tapping six of these drains and will chalk out a plan to tap the 13 others soon," Gupta said, adding that the progress on cleaning the canal has dragged on as the petition was heard by the top court and the tribunal over the years.
