Acquisition of another 97 Tejas, 6 AEW&C aircraft gets CCS nod

New DELHI: India on Tuesday gave the final nod for acquisition of another 97 indigenous Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft or "eyes in the sky", collectively worth around Rs 85,500 crore, which will be crucial to tackle the collusive and 'fused' challenge from China-Pakistan in the years ahead.
The PM-led cabinet committee on security (CCS) approved the Rs 66,500 crore deal for 97 "improved" Tejas Mark-1A fighters to be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which will add to the 83 such single-engine light combat aircraft already ordered from defence PSU under a Rs 46,898 crore deal inked in Feb 2021, top sources told TOI.
"The first two jets of the 83 ordered earlier are fully ready. The final weapons firing trials (including Astra air-to-air missiles) are slated for Sept.
With the order for another 97 jets, HAL will be able to expand and stabilise its supply chains," a source said.
Faced with flak from IAF chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh for huge delays in deliveries, HAL has promised to progressively scale up production to 20 Tejas per year, and then to 24-30 per year, with the third production line now fully functional in Nashik to add to the two existing ones at Bengaluru, apart from private sector supply chains.

The project for six AEW&C aircraft, which will entail mounting active electronically scanned array antenna-based radars, electronic and signal intelligence systems on second-hand Airbus-321 planes bought earlier from Air India, in turn, will cost Rs 19,000 crore. "All six AEW&C aircraft will be delivered by 2033-34," the source said.
Timely induction of the 180 Tejas Mark-1A fighters is needed to stem rapid depletion in the number of IAF fighter squadrons (each has 16-18 jets), which will go down to its lowest-ever figure of 29 squadrons next month after retirement of the 36 old MiG-21s still in service.
IAF, incidentally, is authorised 42.5 combat squadrons. Pakistan now has 25 fighter squadrons, and is slated to get at least 40 J-35A fifth-generation stealth jets from China in the near future. China, of course, has more than four times the number of fighters, bombers and force-multipliers as compared to India.
In the AEW&C arena, which are required to boost surveillance capabilities along the borders as well as help direct friendly fighters during air combat with enemy jets, India lags far behind even Pakistan.
IAF currently has just three Netra AEW&C Mark-1 planes, with indigenous sensors mounted on Brazilian Embraer-145 jets for 240-degree radar coverage, and three Israeli 'Phalcon' radars mounted on Russian IL-76 aircraft.
The new AEW&C project will involve the A-321 narrow-body aircraft first being "hardened and modified" in Spain and then being equipped with an antenna in the nose in addition to the main dorsal antenna to give 300-degree radar coverage.
To make up numbers, defence ministry in March also accorded the initial "acceptance of necessity" to a separate project for six Netra Mark-1A on Embraer-145 jets, with more advanced technologies than the first three Mark-1 aircraft.
On the Tejas front, IAF till now has got 38 of the first 40 Tejas Mark-1 fighters ordered for Rs 8,802 crore under two contracts inked in 2006 and 2010.

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved two mega infrastructure projects, including one for Odisha and another for Rajasthan, with cumulative estimated cost of over `9,500 crore. Briefing media after the meeting of the CCEA, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the construction of a 6-lane access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) in Odisha with an estimated cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore has been approved. The nod has also been given to the construction of green-field Kota-Bundi airport in Rajasthan with a total estimated capital investment of Rs 1,507 crore, he added. The Minister said, the length of the ring road project for the twin capital city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack would be 110.875 km and it would be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). 'At present, the Rameshwar -Tangi stretch of the existing National Highway faces severe congestion due to heavy traffic moving through urban centres like Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. The new Greenfield ring road aims to divert heavy commercial vehicles away from these cities, thereby improving freight efficiency, reducing logistics costs, and promoting socio-economic development in Odisha and neighbouring eastern states,' Vaishnaw said. The alignment will integrate with three National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), offering seamless connectivity to economic and social hubs across the region, he said.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday thanked the Centre for approving the Rs 8,307.74 crore Capital Region Ring Road project, calling it a landmark infrastructure initiative that will decongest major urban centres and boost the economy. He said the project will also enhance logistics efficiency and open new avenues for economic growth and prosperity in Odisha and the eastern region. 'I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon'ble Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri @nitin_gadkari ji for according approval to the construction of the 6-Lane Access-Controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass – 110.875 km) in Odisha at a total cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore,' Majhi posted on X. In a post on X, Modi said, 'Congratulations to the people of Odisha, especially Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas, on Cabinet decision regarding a vital infra project cleared today, which will ease congestion and boost 'Ease of Living''. Currently, connectivity between Rameswar to Tangi on existing National Highway, experiences significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, passing through densely urbanised cities Khurda, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. To address these challenges, the project is proposed to be developed as 6-Lane Access-Controlled Greenfield Highway.. Stating that the project will provide significant benefit to Odisha and other eastern States by diverting heavy commercial traffic away from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Khurda, an official said this will enhance the efficiency of freight movement, reducing logistics cost and driving socio-economic growth in the region. The project alignment integrates with three major national highways (NH-55, NH-57 and NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), providing seamless connectivity to key economic, social and logistics nodes across Odisha, the official added. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with 10 economic nodes, four social nodes and five logistic nodes, providing enhanced multimodality with a major railway station, an airport, one proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two major ports thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. As estimated, the project will generate approximately 74.43 lakh person-days of direct and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.

Mangalagiri: TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao called for an end to the rumours circulating about the privatisation of the Vizag Steel Plant. Addressing the media at the party's central office here on Tuesday, Srinivasa Rao categorically dismissed claims by YSRCP leaders and affiliated labour unions, asserting, 'The propaganda that the Vizag Steel Plant is being privatised is entirely baseless. The people of Andhra Pradesh need not worry, the plant will remain in the public sector.' Srinivasa Rao said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is making proactive efforts to save the plant, he noted that the plant has received a crucial financial lifeline with more than Rs 14,000 crore in funding, Rs 11,440 crore from the Central government and Rs 2,600 crore from the state, to meet operational needs for raw materials, power, and water. He recalled that during a previous crisis in 1998, leaders secured Rs 1,350 crore to save the plant. Now, with the combined sup port of CM Naidu, Union minister Ram Mohan Naidu, MP Sribharat, and the Modi-led Central government, the plant is once again on course for profitability. Refuting privatisation rumours, Srinivasa Rao clarified only some contract work is outsourced to private firms to enhance service quality, a longstanding practice. He emphasised that with over 15,000 contract workers, production is steady, but the plant must run at least two of its three blast furnaces at full capacity to break even. Achieving this operations level could result in profits of Rs 100–200 crore per month, even with a monthly wage bill of Rs 240 crore. Srinivasa Rao criticized the previous YSRCP government for operating at just 20–30 per cent capacity from 2020–2025, resulting in heavy losses, and accused some labour leaders of illegal fund collection. He called for a probe into these allegations and warned against spreading misinformation, particularly on social media, stating, 'False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance.' Assuring public sector status, Srinivasa Rao said the coalition government is committed to the plant's prosperity and worker welfare, with ongoing efforts for the 8,000 displaced families. He concluded that under Chief Minister Naidu's leadership, any rumours about privatisation will be firmly countered.
