TDP rubbishes rumours on ‘privatisation' of VSP

Hans Indiaa day ago
Mangalagiri: TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao called for an end to the rumours circulating about the privatisation of the Vizag Steel Plant. Addressing the media at the party's central office here on Tuesday, Srinivasa Rao categorically dismissed claims by YSRCP leaders and affiliated labour unions, asserting, 'The propaganda that the Vizag Steel Plant is being privatised is entirely baseless. The people of Andhra Pradesh need not worry, the plant will remain in the public sector.'
Srinivasa Rao said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is making proactive efforts to save the plant, he noted that the plant has received a crucial financial lifeline with more than Rs 14,000 crore in funding, Rs 11,440 crore from the Central government and Rs 2,600 crore from the state, to meet operational needs for raw materials, power, and water.
He recalled that during a previous crisis in 1998, leaders secured Rs 1,350 crore to save the plant. Now, with the combined sup port of CM Naidu, Union minister Ram Mohan Naidu, MP Sribharat, and the Modi-led Central government, the plant is once again on course for profitability.
Refuting privatisation rumours, Srinivasa Rao clarified only some contract work is outsourced to private firms to enhance service quality, a longstanding practice. He emphasised that with over 15,000 contract workers, production is steady, but the plant must run at least two of its three blast furnaces at full capacity to break even. Achieving this operations level could result in profits of Rs 100–200 crore per month, even with a monthly wage bill of Rs 240 crore.
Srinivasa Rao criticized the previous YSRCP government for operating at just 20–30 per cent capacity from 2020–2025, resulting in heavy losses, and accused some labour leaders of illegal fund collection. He called for a probe into these allegations and warned against spreading misinformation, particularly on social media, stating, 'False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance.'
Assuring public sector status, Srinivasa Rao said the coalition government is committed to the plant's prosperity and worker welfare, with ongoing efforts for the 8,000 displaced families. He concluded that under Chief Minister Naidu's leadership, any rumours about privatisation will be firmly countered.

‘Always a delight to be among people in Kolkata': PM Modi's Bengal outreach before 2026 polls includes new metro lines, expressway

In a significant move aimed at bolstering infrastructure and signalling a strong developmental agenda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit West Bengal for the third time in recent months. While the inauguration of key metro railway projects in Kolkata is a major highlight, the visit is also pegged on a massive road development initiative—the foundation stone for the 7.2 km-long, six-lane elevated Kona Expressway, a project valued at over Rs 1,200 crore. This visit, the Prime Minister's second in the last two months, comes as West Bengal gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections. The repeated focus on infrastructure projects is being seen as a strategic effort by the BJP to showcase its commitment to the state's development, to counter the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). 'It is always a delight to be among the people of Kolkata, a city whose development we are greatly committed to. Tomorrow's programmes in the city are mainly focussed on connectivity. The metro services, which will be flagged off, include Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar, Sealdah–Esplanade and Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay routes. Connectivity to and from the airport as well as the IT hub areas will be enhanced. I am eager to be among BJP Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda,' PM Modi posted on X on Thursday. The centerpiece of the road development plan is the elevated Kona Expressway. This project, which will enhance connectivity between Howrah, its rural hinterland, and Kolkata, is expected to save commuters hours of travel time. It will cater to a long-standing issue of traffic congestion in the Howrah-Kolkata corridor. Beyond the road project, the Prime Minister will be inaugurating several new metro lines that are set to revolutionize urban transport in Kolkata. These include the Noapara-Jai Hind Biman Bandar metro service, which will provide crucial connectivity to the airport; the Sealdah-Esplanade metro, which will drastically cut down travel time between two of the city's busiest hubs; and the Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section, a vital link to the city's burgeoning IT sector. The visit comes just weeks after the Prime Minister was in Bengal on July 18 — days before the TMC's annual 'Shahid Divas' mega-rally — and it also follows an earlier address in Alipurduar on May 29. 'As the BJP looks to consolidate its position ahead of the 2026 polls, its strategy appears to be a two-pronged approach, demonstrating the Central government's investment in the state's progress while simultaneously engaging with the local populace. This developmental push is intended to present a compelling alternative to the TMC government which has, over a period of time, highlighted how the Centre has deprived Bengal by not allocating funds for several welfare schemes. Moreover, the TMC is also fighting to overcome the instances in the last few years like the RG Kar rape and murder, the SSC scam, and others,' said a political analyst on condition of anonymity.

NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar appears before Mumbai special court in MSCB case

NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, who was named as an accused in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), appeared on Thursday before a Mumbai special court designated for the trial of criminal cases involving legislators. The court, which sent a summons to Rohit Pawar on July 18, recorded his appearance and directed him to execute a personal recognisance (PR) bond. A PR bond allows an accused person to be released from custody without monetary bail on the basis of their promise to appear in court for future proceedings. In its summons, the court observed that there was prima facie proof that the MLA had knowingly participated in the fraudulent acquisition of a sugar mill. Rohit Pawar and his uncle and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar of the NCP were given a clean chit by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police in its closure report filed in 2024. The court is yet to make a decision on the closure report. The Opposition MLA's lawyer submitted before the court that no case was made out against him and that the chargesheet filed in the case was 'bogus'. 'The right to challenge it is reserved,' the lawyer submitted. The court scheduled the next hearing for October 8. ED filed its chargesheet last month naming Rohit Pawar; Baramati Agro Pvt Ltd, where he is a director; and Rajendra Ingwale, a director in Hi-Tech Engineering Corporation Pvt Ltd, allegedly linked to the fraudulent acquisition of a sugar mill at an undervalued price. The chargesheet relates to the sale of Kannad Sarkari Sakhar Karkhana, which was taken over by the MSCB after it suffered losses over the years. The bank's executive committee decided through a resolution to fix the reserve price of Rs 51.06 crore for the sale of the sugar mill based on a valuation report. Shortly after the auction, the mill was revalued at Rs 75 crore, with ED alleging deliberate undervaluation. Rohit Pawar had said that he was being targeted, insisting that due process had been followed in issuing the tender and that the sugar mill had been under the control of an administrator, not a board of directors, at the time of the auction.
