'It's been difficult' - the champion who ran out of challengers
When Dakota Ditcheva became the first British woman to win an MMA world title, she had no idea of the frustration that would follow.After the 26-year-old's historic win over Taila Santos in the PFL flyweight final - her fourth victory in a golden 2024 - she had all the momentum.Congratulations poured in from icons of women's MMA, including Amanda Nunes, Cris Cyborg and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, but soon the narrative would develop.The question starting to form on everybody's lips after that career-high moment in November was "what's next?".Ditcheva was ready to fight anyone, but the dominant way in which she had dispatched her opponents - including three first-round stoppages and one in the second round - meant there were no worthy challengers left in the promotion."Obviously, with me walking through them last year it's made it difficult," Ditcheva tells BBC Sport."It's definitely frustrating. I did so well last year - I fought in the cage four times and obviously the last one was a big one and drew a lot of attention, but now I felt like my momentum had kind of dropped off."Santos was the top girl in the division and the fact I walked through her so easily is another thing which made this year so difficult. They [the PFL] didn't know which direction to put me in."
Manchester's Ditcheva is under contract with the PFL so cannot freely join another promotion to seek new challengers.Ditcheva says she considered entering the PFL's flyweight tournament again this year, but she declined because many of the fighters involved competed in 2024.She points to this year's flyweight tournament finalist Jena Bishop, who Ditcheva knocked out in the first round last August, as an example."I wanted to fight the next level and keep moving up, so that's been the tough thing this year," said Ditcheva.
After all the waiting, the PFL has matched Ditcheva with American Sumiko Inaba, with the pair set to fight at the Champions Series in Cape Town, South Africa on Saturday.With the majority of her theoretically possible opponents competing in the flyweight tournament, Ditcheva says Inaba was selected based on her winning eight of her nine fights and "there's no denying her skill level". It remains to be seen how much of a threat the 34-year-old from Hawaii will present.This event marks the first time a major MMA show has taken place in Africa.Despite being frustrated by the eight-month wait to secure an opponent, Ditcheva can see a positive to her time away from the cage - the buzz of anticipation for her return to action.Her elite striking has led to 12 knockouts in 14 fights, making Ditcheva one of the most exciting British fighters around."I fought four times last year which gave people a lot, but now I feel they're all waiting for me to fight," said Ditcheva."I'm trying to see it as people are looking forward to seeing me fight more now because I've been out for so long."
Inaba last competed in September 2024, beating Mackenzie Stiller."She's been around longer than I have. I don't know whether she is the fight I would have chosen, but then again I don't know what fight I would have chosen," said Ditcheva."I'm just happy they were able to give me a fight. I'm looking forward to it and I'm expecting a tough fight."Ditcheva and Inaba compete in what is billed as the co-main event at the Grand Arena, with American Johnny Eblen defending his middleweight title against Spain's Costello van Steenis in the headline fight.Eblen is the reigning Bellator middleweight champion, last defending it against Fabian Edwards in October last year, but the brand has since been dissolved after the PFL acquired it during a merger in 2023.To replace the Bellator title, the PFL has manufactured a new belt to give to the winner.

Their recent Rugby Championship record is woeful, finishing bottom over the last two editions and claiming successive wooden spoons. 'The group has had a good week of preparation, adjusting pretty well to the time zone and the altitude well here in Johannesburg. There are not many bigger Tests than playing South Africa on their home turf and we know we are going to need to be at our best on Saturday night.' South Africa won both meetings in the Rugby Championship a year ago, winning 7-33 and 12-30 over in Australia. The last time Australia beat South Africa was in August 2022. Australia have not won in South Africa since 2011 and have just one victory at Ellis Park, which came back in 1963 when they were 11-9 victors. Kick-off at Ellis Park is at 4.10pm BST.

Here's my equivalent for rugby: You can't judge the power of a pack until it's gone toe to toe with the Springboks. The Wallabies might have lost the series against the British & Irish Lions, but some of their big boys left with reputations enhanced. Will Skelton, Rob Valetini, Taniela Tupou, Nick Frost, Tom Hooper, Langi Gleeson; where there were concerns about the Aussies ability to mix it with big boys there's now confidence in the tall timber. Well, let's see how hard they really are. Because bullying the Lions is one thing. Standing firm against the double world champions on their own patch is something else entirely. They'll have to do it without Valetini, for my money the most destructive loose forward in the world (Pieter-Steph du Toit fans, I said 'destructive', not 'best'). But, with six forwards on the bench compared to the Boks' five in reserve, Joe Schmidt still has enough to cause a seismic upset. Or does he? Glenn Maxwell steers Australia to T20 series win over South Africa in thriller
Australia's Glenn Maxwell produced an unbeaten half-century in a tense chase to help the hosts edge out South Africa by two wickets in the third and final T20 international in Cairns on Saturday. Maxwell's unbeaten 62 off 36 balls helped Australia chase down a 173-run target with one ball to spare in a thrilling decider at the Cazalys Stadium, completing a 2-1 series victory in style. After 18 overs of their innings, it was a run-a-ball target for Australia with Maxwell in the middle. The South African bowler Corbin Bosch (3-26) claimed two wickets in the penultimate over and kept Maxwell away from the strike. Needing 10 off the last over from Lungi Ngidi, Maxwell took six from the first four balls before reverse-sweeping the bowler for a four to seal Australia's dramatic victory. 'It was a little bit nerve-wracking,' Maxwell said after being awarded player of the match. 'I probably had to do the majority of the striking but, yeah, it was nice to get a couple out of the middle right near the end.' Put in to bat, South Africa overcame a top-order wobble to post a competitive 172-7 with Dewald Brevis (53) top-scoring for them. The tourists were 49-3 inside seven overs but Brevis looked unfazed and hit Aaron Hardie for four sixes in an over, throwing the pacer out of the attack. Brevis raced to a 22-ball fifty but Maxwell took a brilliant running catch near the rope to dismiss him off the bowling of Nathan Ellis (3-31). Tristan Stubbs contributed 25 and Rassie van der Dussen made 38 not out down the order but South Africa still fell just short of the 175 mark. Skipper Mitchell Marsh (54) led Australia's robust reply, dominating his 66-run opening stand with Travis Head (19). Kagiso Rabada floored a return catch from Marsh when the batter was on 26 and Aiden Markram gave a similar reprieve to Head off his own bowling. Head could not capitalise on it though, falling to Markram in the same over.
