Campaign raises R44k for Mkhwanazi, but it won't go to the commissioner
The funds raised on behalf of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be donated to a trust of the South African Police Service (Saps).
This is according to national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
A BackaBuddy campaign was launched by social media users last month to raise money for Mkhwanazi to buy two cows as a gesture of gratitude following a widely publicised media briefing held last month by Mkhwanazi.
The campaign exceeded its R35 000 target, raising R44 000 in total.
Money raised for Mkhwanazi to be donated
On Tuesday, Mathe clarified that the funds will not go directly to Mkhwanazi.
'Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi thanks everyone for their support and contributions. He has, in addition, requested that all donations be made to the South African Police Service Education Trust Fund.
'SAPSET takes care of the educational needs of children whose parents died in the line of duty,' Mathe said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Public service employees are prohibited, in the course of their official duties, from accepting gifts, donations, rewards – whether in cash or in kind – or any other benefits, as such offers may be construed as bribes.

Mathe added that Mkhwanazi's office is awaiting approval from the office of national police commissioner Fannie Masemola to allow funds to be deposited into the trust's account.
'Once the approval has been granted, the money will be used to pay for fees, books and uniforms for children whose mothers and fathers died on duty.'
BackaBuddy confirmed it has not yet released the funds, citing the need for formal consent.

Police corruption allegations
Mkhwanazi drew national attention when he publicly accused Police minister Senzo Mchunu during a press briefing on 6 July.
He claimed that Mchunu sought to dismantle the police's political killings task team based in KZN, allegedly to shield individuals linked to politically connected crime syndicates.
The provincial commissioner also alleged that a drug cartel based in Gauteng was influencing a high-level criminal syndicate with reach into Saps, the judiciary, and other law enforcement bodies.
Mchunu has since been placed on special leave pending the outcome of a judicial commission of inquiry, led by former Constitutional Court (ConCourt) Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
The commission will deliver a preliminary report in three months and a final report within six months.
In addition, Parliament has established an ad hoc committee to investigate Mkhwanazi's claims, with a 90-day deadline to conclude its work.

'The postmortem results were also handed in to the court. In aggravation of sentence, Zikalala told the court that the accused had a previous conviction for assaulting the deceased on a prior occasion. The accused was sentenced accordingly, and the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm. 'We remain committed to the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide,' said Ramkisson-Kara. Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said it is deeply saddening to witness continued violence perpetrated against women and children across all sectors of society. 'Between January and March 2025 alone, 966 women and 314 children were murdered. In the first quarter of this year, 5,727 people lost their lives to murder and over 24,000 sexual offences were reported and 10,688 reported cases of rape. "These are not mere statistics. South Africa does not lack insight into the root causes and consequences of GBVF; what is missing is decisive leadership and meaningful implementation,' said Monakali. Alleged killers of Mpumalanga cop traced to Eswatini
On August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police (REP), with the assistance of Commissioner Vusie Manoma Masango, traced three suspected killers to Eswatini. Lowvelder reports that the suspects allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on August 8, while he and fellow officers were responding to a burglary at a business centre in Schoemansdal. According to the REP, two additional suspects were later traced to the Sishweleni region. When they noticed the police, they allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and fatally shoot both suspects. In a statement, National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola thanked the cross-border operation and Masango for assisting in tracing the killers to Eswatini. 'On behalf of SAPS and Mtshweni's family, we would like to thank the REP, led by Masango, as well as the Umbutfo Defence Force for assisting Mpumalanga SAPS in locating these killers. We look forward to strengthening and deepening our co-operation on law enforcement matters. 'The attacks and killing of our police officers are a serious concern, and we call on communities to help put a stop to these killings. From April 1 to date, we have already lost six police officers; we cannot afford to lose more. We need as many boots on the ground as possible to prevent and combat crime,' says Masemola. Further investigation led Eswatini police to Mantambe in Shiselweni, where a third suspect allegedly took his own life with a pistol before police could arrest him. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli extended his condolences to Mtshweni's family. 'Mtshweni's sacrifice is a stark reminder of the risks our police officers face every day. Four South Africans arrested over Home Affairs fire
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the fire that destroyed the Germiston Home Affairs office. The incident happened on Tuesday during a protest by Pharoe Park residents against eviction for unpaid rent. Amid the unrest, some protesters allegedly threw a petrol bomb into the first floor of the Home Affairs building, sparking a fire that spread from a neighbouring block of flats. Schreiber said Home Affairs had opened a criminal case and was working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure convictions. 'Home Affairs is collating evidence and will open criminal charges against the anarchists who set a block of flats on fire in Germiston, which then spread to the neighbouring Home Affairs office. It is nothing less than an attack on our social infrastructure and cannot stand,' he said. Police arrested two people on Tuesday and took two more into custody on Thursday. 'For those who jumped to conclusions designed to fuel another type of fire: all four are South Africans, who will be prosecuted because we are governed by law, not prejudice,' Schreiber added.
