‘Sajnur tortured, coerced': Neighbours reject cop claim

Malda: Neighbours and relatives of Moktar Khan and his wife, Sajnur Parveen, on Wednesday rejected the Delhi Police's claim that Sajnur fabricated the allegation of torture.
Back home in Chanchal lives Moktar's only sister, Muktari.
The stark poverty in the area is palpable, with almost every household having one or two members working in another state, most commonly in Haryana or Delhi.
Following the viral circulation of the alleged torture of Sajnur and her child, after a social media post by chief minister

, police visited the house, where only Muktari was present to receive them. Responding to the Delhi police's assertion that no torture occurred, Muktari said: "Does a criminal concede his crime? My brother himself told me that in his absence, my sister-in-law with her child was taken to the police station and roughed up.
The child was thrown on the floor and he was injured. They were only released after paying Rs 25,000.

Local Panchayat Samiti member Johur Ahmed, who has been in constant contact with Moktar, said: "Delhi police were after the family once the video of torture went viral. They were called by police and pressurised to give statements at the will of the police. I asked them not to do so, but I am not sure whether they could remain stubborn before police pressure."
TMC MP Mausam Noor also visited Moktar's house in Chanchal and consoled Muktari. She said: "Delhi police are now giving a false narrative. The family is forced to sign a Hindi statement in the police station."
Villagers in Pirojabad of Mokdumpur Gram Panchayat expressed concern for Moktar and his family. Moktar, along with his parents, wife Sajnur, and two-year-old child, has been residing in Gita Colony, New Delhi, for several years.
His father, Ajmal Khan had moved there about 16 years ago. Moktar worked as a sweeper.
The family reached Kolkata on Wednesday and will arrive in Malda via the Vande Bharat Express on Thursday morning. From the station, they will be taken to Zilla Parishad Hall at the behest of the district administration, where a medical team will be on standby to examine their health condition.

Delhi Police has arrested a woman and her boyfriend for allegedly plotting and executing the murder of her husband and dumping his body in a drain in Haryana's Sonipat, an official said on Saturday. The murder was committed over the affair, as well as the victim's abusive and criminal behaviour. (Pexel) The arrested accused have been identified as Soniya (34), a resident of Alipur in Delhi, and her 28-year-old boyfriend Rohit, who hails from Sonipat, the official said, adding that another accused in the case, Vijay, is absconding. The murder was committed over the affair, as well as the victim's abusive and criminal behaviour, he added. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said, "The victim, Pritam Prakash (42), was a known history-sheeter in Alipur. He had more than 10 cases registered against him, including those under the Arms Act, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. He had also been declared a proclaimed offender by the court." On July 5, 2024, Pritam came to pick up Soniya from her sister's house in Sonipat's Gannaur but left after an argument. That day, Soniya offered ₹50,000 to her sister's brother-in-law Vijay and asked him to kill her husband. Later, when Pritam returned and pleaded with her, Soniya let him stay in the house. Vijay sent her a video of the body on social media, which was later deleted. On July 20, Soniya lodged a missing complaint with Alipur Police, claiming that her husband had gone out and never returned. While the case was initially treated as a routine missing person report, it raised suspicion when there were no financial or digital footprints of the victim for several weeks. During the investigation, the team traced the mobile number linked to Pritam, which had become active again after nearly a year. Surveillance revealed that the phone was being used in Sonipat, leading the team to Rohit. On being questioned, Rohit initially misled the investigators but later broke down and confessed to the crime, police said. Rohit told police that he was in a relationship with Soniya and that the two had conspired to kill Pritam, DCP Indora said. He admitted that Soniya allegedly paid Vijay to eliminate her husband. Haryana Police recovered an unidentified male body Around the same time, Haryana Police recovered an unidentified male body from the area, but were unable to identify it. The case remained unsolved until Delhi Police connected the dots nearly a year later. Police said Soniya later sold Pritam's auto rickshaw for ₹4.5 lakh and gave his mobile phone to Rohit. DNA samples preserved during the Haryana post-mortem will now be used to conclusively identify the body. Soniya was about 15 years old when she fell in love with Pritam and got married against their families wishes. "The marriage was never reported to the police by the families, who later accepted the couple. They have three children from the wedlock, including a 16-year-old boy and two daughters," the DCP said. He said Rohit was previously involved in four criminal cases related to murder and arms possession. Rohit, who got married in April 2025 and used to work as a private cab driver, continued his extramarital affair with Soniya. Shah praises ₹20,500 crore PM-Kisan release, calls it farmer-friendly
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday hailed the disbursement of Rs 20,500 crore to 9.7 crore farmers under the Kisan Samman Nidhi and said it was yet another "farmer-friendly" step of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While visiting his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on Saturday, Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 52 development projects worth approximately Rs 2,183.45 crore. In a major move to support farmers, the prime minister released the 20th instalment of the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, transferring Rs 20,500 crore to the bank accounts of over 9.70 crore eligible farmers across the country at a function held in his parliamentary constituency. "Farmer-friendly Modi ji today took another step towards farmer welfare by releasing the 20th installment of the 'Kisan Samman Nidhi' from Kashi. Under this, a total amount of more than Rs 20,500 crore was transferred to over 9.7 crore farmers across the country through DBT," he wrote on X in Hindi. Additionally, Shah said, the prime minister also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated various development projects worth Rs 2,200 crore for Varanasi. He said these projects related to infrastructure, education, health, tourism and cultural heritage will play a significant role in the reconstruction of Kashi and for public welfare.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the BJP and accused the party of having a double standard over protecting regional identity, saying that the BJP in Gujarat calls for protecting the state's language and culture, but anyone who does the same in Maharashtra is defamed. While addressing a gathering in Maharashtra's Raigad, the MNS chief claimed that Biharis were expelled from Gujarat twice, but these very people who led these anti-Bihari protests and drove them out of Gujarat were later accepted into the BJP party and made MLAs. He further said those who advocate for Marathi and culture are unfairly criticised for harassing outsiders, while a double standard exists elsewhere. 'We are accused of harassing outsiders by raising the issue of Hindi-Marathi, but Biharis were driven out of Gujarat twice. The people who protested against Biharis there, beat them, and drove them out of the state were taken into the BJP party and made MLAs. They keep their state organised, but in other states, if anyone talks about protecting their language and culture, then they are defamed," he said as quoted by news agency ANI. The row was ignited in the state, especially in the Mumbai metropolitan region, after opposition parties like the Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS took on the government over two GRs on the three-language policy in schools and teaching of Hindi from Class I. Following opposition, including from Raj and Uddhav Thackeray, the Maharashtra government withdrew the resolutions. Later on July 5, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS head Raj Thackeray shared a stage in Mumbai for the cause of the Marathi language, and vowed to oppose the 'imposition" of Hindi in Maharashtra after the state government rolled back the GRs. It escalated after incidents involving verbal and physical assaults, vandalism, and public intimidation by the MNS workers have been reported from various parts of the state, drawing widespread criticism and legal scrutiny. In multiple videos that have gone viral on social media, MNS workers were seen confronting shopkeepers, auto drivers, and even bank employees for not speaking Marathi. In one incident in Mumbai, a medical shop employee was beaten and forced to apologise publicly for allegedly posting a WhatsApp status deemed disrespectful to the Marathi language. In another case from Pune, a bank manager was slapped during work hours for addressing customers in Hindi.
