Hong Kong beaten to curling bronze as Philippines win gold at Asian Winter Games
Hong Kong's men's curling team missed out on what would have been the city's first ever Asian Winter Games medal as they lost their bronze medal match against China on Friday morning.
The city's squad of Jason Chang, Martin Yan Ho-tin, Cheng Ching-nam, Chung Cheuk-hei and Ma Chi-lap were defeated 10-3 by the mainland team.
The Philippines won gold after winning the final against South Korea.
This year's Games are the first to which Hong Kong has sent a curling team. The city has appeared in six previous Asian Winter Games, going back to the first in Sapporo in 1986, but never won a medal.
Led by captain Chang, they lost their first match, also against China, but went on to prevail in their remaining four round-robin matches, seeing off Thailand, Japan and Qatar before finishing with a 15-1 thrashing of Saudi Arabia.
Hong Kong lost their semi-final 13-2 to South Korea on Thursday evening, while the Philippines squad were battling through to the final by defeating China 7-6, clinching victory only on the eighth and final end.

NFL players cleared to take part in 2028 Olympics
NFL players cleared to take part in 2028 Olympics Washington Commanders players during an NFL divisional round game against the Detroit Lions. File photo: AFP NFL players have been given the green light to take part in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics following a vote by team owners, the league confirmed. A resolution allowing players to participate at the 2028 Games, when gridiron's non-contact version – 'flag football' – will be a new sport, was approved by NFL team owners at a meeting in Minnesota. The move potentially sets the stage for an NFL 'Dream Team' featuring some of the sport's biggest stars, with several prominent players already expressing an interest in playing in Los Angeles. "It's an incredible honor for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "I know first-hand that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players interested in the chance to compete for their country on the world stage. We are thrilled that they will now have that chance." Flag football is an abbreviated, five-a-side form of American football, where players "tackle" each other by grabbing a flag attached to the waist of opponents. Six men's teams and six women's teams will take part in the Olympic tournament in 2028, with each squad comprised of 10 players. Goodell said allowing NFL players to participate in the Olympics was in line with the league's desire to boost the global appeal of the sport. "This is a great opportunity for the sport," Goodell said. "It's truly the next step in making NFL football and football a global sport for men and women of all ages and opportunities across the globe." "We think this is the right thing to do, and this is a big step in accomplishing that," he added. Under the rules set out in the resolution, only one player per NFL team can compete on each national team participating in the Olympic tournament. Additionally, teams' designated international players will be allowed to play for their respective home countries. The resolution also requires Olympic flag football teams to implement minimum standards for medical staff, and requires field playing surfaces to be up to NFL standards. Several NFL players have already expressed an interest in playing in the Olympics, with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Kansas City Chiefs counterpart Patrick Mahomes among those indicating a desire to play in the Games. West Indies issue LA 2028 Olympic cricket plea
West Indies issue LA 2028 Olympic cricket plea Cricket returns to the Olympics in 2028 for the first time since 1900. Photo: AFP Cricket West Indies has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to give Caribbean nations a chance to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Games and avoid the region being "shut out of history." LA 2028 will see cricket returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, with a six-team T20 event in both the men's and women's game set to be included in the programme. The ICC, cricket's global governing body, has yet to announce the qualification process, but there are concerns in the West Indies, long one of the sport's established major international teams and the one closest geographically to Los Angeles, that their constituent countries could be excluded. That's because while the likes of Barbados, Jamaica – the home of Games sprint great Usain Bolt – Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad and Tobago compete under the West Indies banner when it comes to international cricket, those territories are all individual entities at an Olympics. So if cricket qualification for LA 2028 is to be decided primarily on the basis of world rankings, the event could go ahead without any Caribbean involvement at all. "All we are asking is that our individual nations' exceptional Olympic legacy be considered in the conversation," CWI chief executive Chris Dehring said on Thursday. "Our nations have proudly flown their individual flags atop Olympic podiums as perennial gold medallists. "Now, with cricket's inclusion, we must ensure that our cricketers are not shut out of history. We are ready to collaborate. We are ready to compete. But above all, we are asking for fairness." CWI appears to accept there is no prospect of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowing a West Indies team to compete at LA 2028, even though their men's side were T20 world champions in 2012 and 2016 – when their women took the equivalent female global title. But in a letter to the ICC, CWI suggested two possible routes for regional representation. The first would see an inter-Caribbean qualifying tournament should the West Indies men or women find themselves in a qualifying position, allowing the winner to take the region's spot. In the second, a dedicated regional qualifying process involving each of the West Indies' independent nations would take place. CWI president Kishore Shallow added: "The Caribbean has always punched above its weight at the Olympics, inspiring the world with our athletic brilliance. "Cricket's return to the Games in 2028 must not exclude our young cricketers from the same dream that has inspired our athletes." (AFP)

Celtics star Tatum out for season with Achilles injury
Celtics star Tatum out for season with Achilles injury Tatum was helped off the court late in the second half of game four. Photo: Reuters Jayson Tatum suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon during the Boston Celtics' playoff defeat to the New York Knicks, the NBA champions confirmed, leaving the basketball superstar facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. "Jayson Tatum today underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon," the Celtics announced on X, formerly Twitter. "No timetable is currently available for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Further updates will be provided when appropriate." Tatum was carried off the court in the fourth quarter of Boston's 121-113 loss on Monday that leaves them on the brink of elimination from the postseason. Tatum, a six-time NBA All-Star and a member of the USA's Olympic gold medal-winning teams at the Tokyo and Paris Games, had crumpled to the floor at Madison Square Garden in agony on Monday after suffering the injury. Tatum had been in superb form before the injury, scoring 42 points in a classic duel. He was helped off the court and was later ferried to the locker room in a wheelchair, the evident seriousness of the injury drawing an outpouring of support and concern from teammates and fellow players from across the NBA. "Hate that it happened. The NBA is a brotherhood, praying for him," Knicks star Josh Hart said during a post-game interview. LeBron James also posted a message of support on X, while stars from other sports also extended sympathy. Tatum's injury complicates the Celtics' efforts to dig themselves out of their 3-1 hole against the Knicks, who can clinch the best-of-seven series with victory in Boston on Wednesday. It also casts a pall over the team's future, with serious Achilles injuries often involving a recovery time of up to a year or more. NBA great Kevin Durant was out for roughly 18 months after tearing an Achilles tendon during the 2019 NBA Finals. Durant missed the entirety of the 2019-2020 season, finally returning in December 2020. The Dallas Mavericks' Klay Thompson also suffered a lengthy layoff following a torn Achilles. Thompson, who was with the Golden State Warriors at the time, suffered an Achilles tear in November 2020 and did not return until January 2022. (AFP)
