How a 1980s Mid-Levels apartment became a chic family home

Australian couple Kwai and Jason Chang took a 'when in Rome' approach to buying their Hong Kong flat. Together with daughter Emily, 15, the family has 'toggled' between Hong Kong and Melbourne, Australia, since 2018, initially renting in Repulse Bay on the scenic south side. 'We felt we were living very much an expat life, and wanted to reconnect with the real Hong Kong,' says Kwai. The vibrancy of the city beckoned for Kwai, a homemaker, and Jason, a private equity investor, who settled on their 2,559 sq ft four-bedroom, three-bathroom (plus helper's quarters) Mid-Levels apartment in 2022. Kwai's initial ideas to personalise the space were tempered by caution from their designer, Hintegro founder Keith Chan Shing-hin, who advised them not to stray into 'grey area' alterations. 'I'd ideally wanted a butler's pantry to display our ingredients and appliances – while also hiding mess – but the wall that had to go couldn't legally be removed, so we had to settle for a deep cupboard.'

COURTESY QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER Candice Uytengsu gave The Queen's Medical Center what is believed to be the largest donation by a single person at $7.5 million. The money will go toward the center's expanded emergency department, which will be renamed the Uytengsu Family Emergency Department. The Queen's Medical Center announced Friday it received a $7.5 million gift to support the expansion of its emergency department in Honolulu. The donation was made by Candice Uytengsu and is believed to be the largest contribution to The Queen's Medical Center by one person. In recognition of this contribution, the department will be renamed the Uytengsu Family Emergency Department. 'We are extremely grateful for this very generous gift, ' said Jason Chang, Queen's president and CEO, in a news release. 'In the spirit of generosity that has sustained Queen's since its founding, Candice has made a transformative commitment to support our mission of providing exceptional health care services to Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawaii.' In a statement, Uytengsu said, 'Just as Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV made known in 1859, philanthropy is essential to the hospital's ability to care for our community. It goes without saying that I have the utmost respect for all of the caregivers who strive to provide great care every single day. I hope this gift inspires others to give, knowing that together, we can ensure Queen's remains a place of healing for generations to come.' The Queen's Punchbowl emergency department—the state's only Level 1 trauma center and comprehensive stroke center—cares for more than 60, 000 patients a year. Planned renovations include increasing the number of treatment rooms to 76 from 35, bringing in the latest medical technology and expanding behavioral health services, among other improvements. Hong Kong beaten to curling bronze as Philippines win gold at Asian Winter Games

Hong Kong's men's curling team missed out on what would have been the city's first ever Asian Winter Games medal as they lost their bronze medal match against China on Friday morning. The city's squad of Jason Chang, Martin Yan Ho-tin, Cheng Ching-nam, Chung Cheuk-hei and Ma Chi-lap were defeated 10-3 by the mainland team. The Philippines won gold after winning the final against South Korea. This year's Games are the first to which Hong Kong has sent a curling team. The city has appeared in six previous Asian Winter Games, going back to the first in Sapporo in 1986, but never won a medal. Led by captain Chang, they lost their first match, also against China, but went on to prevail in their remaining four round-robin matches, seeing off Thailand, Japan and Qatar before finishing with a 15-1 thrashing of Saudi Arabia. Hong Kong lost their semi-final 13-2 to South Korea on Thursday evening, while the Philippines squad were battling through to the final by defeating China 7-6, clinching victory only on the eighth and final end.
