Australian couple Kwai and Jason Chang took a 'when in Rome' approach to buying their Hong Kong flat.
Together with daughter Emily, 15, the family has 'toggled' between Hong Kong and Melbourne, Australia, since 2018, initially renting in
Repulse Bay on the scenic south side.
'We felt we were living very much an expat life, and wanted to reconnect with the real Hong Kong,' says Kwai.
The vibrancy of the city beckoned for Kwai, a homemaker, and Jason, a private equity investor, who settled on their 2,559 sq ft four-bedroom, three-bathroom (plus helper's quarters)

Kwai's initial ideas to personalise the space were tempered by caution from their designer,
Hintegro founder Keith Chan Shing-hin, who advised them not to stray into 'grey area' alterations.

'We are a healthy family that loves to cook from scratch,' says Kwai. 'I'd ideally wanted a butler's pantry to display our ingredients and appliances – while also hiding mess – but the wall that had to go couldn't legally be removed, so we had to settle for a deep cupboard.'

80% of Hong Kong's disadvantaged children suffer nutritional imbalance: survey
Eight in 10 children from low-income families in Hong Kong suffer from serious nutritional imbalance, with less than 14 per cent getting enough dairy, a survey has found. Advertisement The People Service Centre on Tuesday released the findings of a four-year study that monitored 426 children, aged three to 11, from underprivileged households, including those living in public housing and substandard accommodation such as subdivided flats and cubicle rooms. The study, conducted by the poverty-focused NGO in collaboration with the Hong Kong Community Dietitian Association and Emeritus Professor in Public Health and Primary Care Albert Lee at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, showed that 80 per cent of the children had a serious nutritional imbalance, with only 13.6 per cent meeting the dairy intake target set by the Department of Health. About 60 per cent of the children had insufficient intake of both fruits and vegetables. Nearly half failed to meet the recommended grain intake, while close to 40 per cent did not consume enough meat. 'There were at least 40 per cent of children who did not meet the standards in each of the five major food categories,' Gloria Yeung Tan-ping, a project officer at the centre, said. 'The figures reflected the serious nutritional imbalance in children, and the intake level will affect their growth.' Advertisement The department recommends a daily balanced diet for children aged two to five that includes 1.5 to three bowls of grains, at least 1.5 servings of vegetables, at least one serving of fruit, up to 111 grams of meat, fish, egg and alternatives, and two servings of milk or alternatives.

Hong Kong McDonald's refurbished outlet poised to surpass London branch as world's busiest
McDonald's flagship store in Hong Kong is close to claiming the crown as the busiest in the fast-food chain's global network of more than 40,000 outlets, a capstone in a half-century of operating in the city. Advertisement The 9,000 sq ft (836 square metre) Admiralty Centre store, which reopened for business last month after a three-week renovation, serves more than 1,000 customers an hour during peak periods, putting it on a trajectory to surpass the chain's outlet in the concourse of London's Liverpool Street tube station as the busiest McDonald's store on the planet, said the company's international developmental lead, Hisham Sidky. 'We are competing to get to first place, beating the Liverpool [Street] outlet,' Hisham said during an interview on a recent evening at the bustling outlet, surrounded by diners. '[The Admiralty Centre outlet] is going to make it very soon. If not this month, it will be next month.' Hong Kong, which displayed its first golden arches logo along Paterson Street in Causeway Bay in January 1975, now claims four of McDonald's five busiest stores worldwide. The chain will add five to six more outlets this year to its 260 shops in Hong Kong, which would translate to about 3.5 outlets for every 100,000 residents, making the city one of McDonald's most important in Asia in terms of density, said Randy Lai, CEO of McDonald's Hong Kong.
