New Zealander reads about Bengaluru in media, picks city for cancer treatment
The story was about a fellow Kiwi who had travelled all the way to Bengaluru for CAR T-cell therapy and gone into remission.
For Pipe, who had already endured 20 cycles of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, it felt like the only ray of hope left.
"In New Zealand, laws don't allow doctors to recommend treatments outside the country since care is covered under public health. I had a bone marrow transplant in 2023, but remission lasted only 14 months. By Feb 2025, the cancer was back. A new drug was tried but it failed, and by May, doctors told me I had reached the end of the road," Pipe recalled.
"That's when I read about CAR T-cell therapy, where my own T-cells would be modified and infused back into me to fight cancer.
The newspaper report spoke of a professor who underwent the same treatment in Bengaluru and had been in remission for a year. That convinced me," he explained.

Soon after, Pipe reached out to Dr Prasad Narayanan, senior consultant and director of medical oncology, hemato-oncology and bone marrow transplant at Cytecare Hospitals, Yelahanka, to begin discussions.
After the initial chemo and final Car-T infusion in the city, Pipe said: "It was an anticlimax. Doctors asked me how I felt. I felt bored and only stared at the nine faces that were surrounding me," he laughed, thanking Bengaluru's medical specialists.
Robotic cardiac procedures
City hospitals across the board are seeing patients coming in from abroad for advanced treatments. In the past three years alone, 93 patients came to Sakra World Hospital from outside India for robotic cardiac surgeries. "While conventional open-heart surgery typically requires 8-10 days of hospital stay and 2-3 months for full recovery, patients at Sakra undergoing robotic cardiac procedures are often discharged within 3-4 days, with most returning to normal life in 2-3 weeks," said hospital representatives.

Social nedia fuels snail meat craze, prices skyrocket in AP
Vijayawada: What was once a humble seasonal delicacy has now become a booming business. Snail meat, traditionally collected near canals during the rains, is now in high demand after social media campaigns promoted it as a cure for ailments like asthma, breathing troubles, and back pain. The sudden craze has sent prices skyrocketing from Rs 240 per kg earlier to nearly Rs 550 per kg. In Krishna district, especially along the Vijayawada–Gudivada and Vijayawada–Avanigadda roads, small roadside stalls have mushroomed. Sellers catch snails near canals, clean them, and sell the meat fresh to eager buyers. Long queues of customers can be seen every afternoon, many of them traveling from Vijayawada and nearby towns. B Suri Babu, a seller from Thotlavalluru, said, "I never imagined snail meat would get this popular. Earlier, only a few locals bought it during the rainy season. Now people from towns and cities come in large numbers every day, and we are struggling to meet the demand." One customer, Srinivas Rao, who traveled 24 km from Gudivada to buy the meat, said, "I came all the way because it's difficult to find snail meat in my town. I heard it gives good energy and helps with back pain. Even though it is expensive, I don't mind buying it for my family." Medical experts, however, are urging caution against exaggerated claims. Dr. Vattipalli Bhagyaraj explained that while snail meat is rich in protein, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, it does not provide miraculous cures. "It is highly nutritious and boosts immunity, but it will not instantly reduce back pain or cure asthma. People should see it as healthy food, not a magic medicine," he said. Despite the warnings, snail meat continues to sell rapidly in Krishna district, proving that the fusion of tradition, social media buzz, and health awareness can create unexpected market trends. Infant survives 35-min CPR after pneumonia-induced cardiac arrest
Mumbai: Bhiwandi resident Nafisa (name changed), a mother of three, is still shaken that the common cold she presumed her youngest, 75-day-old son had, turned out to be such a serious chest infection that he needed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The shortage of oxygen due to the infection, which was later diagnosed as bacterial pneumonia, caused "fits", then his heart stopped and needed to be shocked back into rhythm even as he needed 35 minutes of CPR -- a timeframe that some doctors believe could have been excessive. However, both Nafisa and paediatric intensivist Dr Guruprasad Shanbaug, who treated her son at KIMS Hospital in Thane, want to highlight his recovery. Although there is a high risk of brain damage when oxygen supply (hence blood supply) is cut even for a few minutes, the child has recovered well. "He is gaining weight, he maintains eye contact and began taking breastfeeds without any issues. This is remarkable," said the doctor. When her son developed a cold on July 10, Nafisa started treating him with nasal sprays, vapour inhalation, and medicines prescribed by a local doctor, but he got seizures on the fifth day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo She and her tailor-husband then ran across Bhiwandi but could find a neonatal intensive care bed in the newly inaugurated KIMS Hospital in Thane. "We gave medications to stop the seizures and ventilated him when his heart stopped," he said. The medical team then used a defibrillator to shock his heart back to rhythm before using various CPR techniques (such as bag and mask ventilation) appropriate for his tiny body. It took another 20 days of hospitalisation before he could get back to normal. Senior paediatric pulmonologist Dr Indu Khosla said that many children currently need hospitalisation due to an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). "All the nine children in the paediatric ICU at SRCC Hospital, Haji Ali, are down with RSV, which is the leading cause of viral pneumonia," she said. Doctors are concerned about the long-term effects of the 35-minute CPR session. Associate professor Dr Sushant Mane from state-run JJ Hospital said that usually 10 to 20 minutes of CPR is recommended in neonates. Another doctor said developmental milestones in children can only be assessed after four months of age. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). ‘50K stray dogs sterilised across 17 cities this year so far'
Lucknow: About 50,000 stray dogs have been sterilised across the 17 cities governed by municipal corporations during the present financial year, said the urban development department during a workshop on effective management of animals on Thursday. Also, UP is the only state in the country that has got 17 animal birth control centers (ABC centre), said officials in the workshop where veterinary welfare officers from the municipal corporations along with members of the state level monitoring committee gave a detailed presentation on dog population management measures. Principal secretary of the department, Abhijat said while 15 cities have one ABC centre, Lucknow and Ghaziabad have two such centres in order to manage the stray dogs. "The state govt has provided close to Rs 33 crore for setting up the centres and managing the population, the highest budget earmarked by any state so far," said Abhijat.
