After just one season, the Carolina Panthers will be moving on without cornerback Dane Jackson.
The team announced on Friday morning that they have released the 28-year-old defender. Jackson signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract with Carolina last offseason.
Before joining the Panthers for the 2024 campaign, Jackson spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills. The 2020 seventh-round pick tallied 28 starts over 52 games from 2020 to 2023—amassing 152 combined tackles, three interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles.
Jackson, who was the very early favorite to serve as Carolina's No. 2 cornerback alongside starter Jaycee Horn, ended up playing in just nine games for the team. He recorded 23 combined tackles and two passes defensed with three starts as well as career-lows in overall defensive grade (33.8) and coverage grade (36.4) from Pro Football Focus.
Per Over The Cap, the release saves the Panthers approximately $3.35 million in cap space ahead of the start of the new league year.

Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

The Minnesota Vikings will keep Wes Phillips as their offensive coordinator for a little while longer. According to Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune, the Vikings and Phillips have agreed to a contract extension. Phillips' deal was set to expire after the 2025 season, but the team is adding one more year to his contract, keeping him on the coaching staff through 2026. Advertisement Phillips joined the Vikings as their offensive coordinator in 2022 after three years with the Los Angeles Rams on Sean McVay's staff. Before that, he was Washington's tight ends coach from 2014-2018, spending three years on the same staff as McVay and two years with Kevin O'Connell. The Vikings have ranked seventh, 10th and 12th in total yards under Phillips the last three years but will look to improve those numbers in 2025 with J.J. McCarthy taking over as the starting quarterback. This article originally appeared on Vikings Wire: Vikings, OC Wes Phillips agree to contract extension

Aaron Rodgers Looks Forward to Mentoring Will Howard: ‘I'm Gonna Help Him Out as Much as I Can'

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers revealed during his introductory press conference on Tuesday that he looks forward to serving as a mentor for rookie Will Howard. 'Will's a good kid,' Rodgers said. 'Got to talk a little bit. I thought he did really well today. he seems pretty bright. [The game's] not too big for him. He got through progressions really well. I'm gonna be with him every single day and every single meeting. Found my seat next to him in the offensive meeting… I'm gonna help him out as much as I can.' Advertisement Howard is chomping at the bit to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. 'I was fired up,' Howard said when he heard that Rodgers signed with the Steelers. 'Believe me. That's a guy I grew up watching, idolizing, and it's cool to be in the same room with him. Just hearing, first day, his thoughts and the way that he looks at things. He's a legend in this game. I'm gonna try and learn as much as I can from him and be the best support guy that I can be for him. I think it's amazing. The opportunity for me to learn and to work with a guy like that is second to none.' Having the chance to learn from a four-time NFL MVP like Aaron Rodgers will only set Howard up for success at the next level, and he knows that. 'I've been watching him pretty much, damn near, my whole life. There's a lot of things I've picked up from him. The things he can do with the football in his hands are kind of special,' Howard said. 'You got to make the best of your situation. I think him being here, for me, is like a dream come true, learning from a guy like that.' Advertisement Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love recently revealed that Aaron Rodgers played a big part in his development. 'In my time with A-Rod, we had a great relationship. It was awesome being in the same room with him, being able to learn. He was amazing with everything. And I definitely appreciate the way he handled everything on the outside with obviously him leaving and me taking over, and he's been very supportive of me [since],' Love said in an interview with Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee. Brett Favre didn't necessarily welcome Rodgers with open arms in 2005, but that wasn't the case for Love. Rodgers made sure to be a good mentor. He also looks forward to facing Rodgers in Week 8 when the Steelers and Packers square off on Sunday Night Football at Acrisure Stadium. It will be Rodgers' first meeting against his former team since departing Green Bay after the 2022 season. Advertisement 'I was excited for A-Rod,' Love said when asked about Rodgers signing with the Steelers. 'I don't feel like I was too surprised. There were a lot of rumors going on the whole offseason about him going to the Steelers. I was excited for him that he was going to keep playing. It's going to be fun, it's going to be awesome. I'm excited for it. I can't wait to be on different sides meeting up and I know we'll talk pregame and things like that and hopefully we can exchange jerseys after.' Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe provided reporting from Pittsburgh.
