Bengaluru stampede: Teen victim's mother alleges jewellery worth ₹1 lakh stolen off her body, demands probe

Hindustan Times5 days ago
The mother of a teenage victim of the Bengaluru stampede has alleged that jewellery worth ₹1 lakh that her daughter was wearing at the time of the tragedy that unfolded near the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 was missing when her body was handed over to the family. 13-year-old Divyanshi, a class 9 student, lost her life during a celebration of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) winning the IPL title last month. Her mother, 35-year-old Ashwini Shivakumar, has filed a police complaint about the missing jewellery.
Divyanshi was the youngest of 11 victims in the stadium stampede. The complaint lodged on Thursday stated that her body still had a pair of gold earrings and a chain when it was taken to the Bowring Hospital on the evening of June 4.
According to the complaint, the family did not notice the missing jewellery at first and realised that it was missing later. The allegation is that the jewellery, which is said to be worth ₹1 lakh, was stolen at the mortuary where the body was kept.
'There is a lot of sentimental value attached to the ornaments as a sign of what was worn by my daughter in her last moments,' her mother, a resident of Yelahanka, stated in her complaint. She has sought an investigation into the matter.
The Bengaluru stampede
The June 4 stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden IPL trophy-winning campaign left 11 people dead, drawing sharp criticism over planning and crowd management.
The police initially denied permission for the victory parade, but the team was later allowed to hold a small event. However, a huge crowd gathered, resulting in a stampede.
The state government ordered the suspension of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Vikash Kumar Vikash and four other officers of the Bengaluru Police a day after the incident.
In its report to the high court, the Karnataka government blamed RCB and the event management company overseeing the celebration for the tragedy.

'They gave a chance to Karun Nair...': Father of snubbed India player in England series slams BCCI selectors

Karun Nair The fifth and final Test between India and England is underway. While players like Anshul Kamboj and Sai Sudharsan made their Test debuts during the series, and Karun Nair returned to the playing XI after a long gap, a few players have remained on the sidelines throughout, including Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Abhimanyu Easwaran. Despite being part of multiple India squads since receiving his maiden call-up in 2022, he is still waiting for his Test debut, even as 15 others have debuted during that time. Abhimanyu Easwaran's father lashed out at the team management. His father, Ranganathan Easwaran, has expressed his frustration over the way his son has been treated by the team management. 'I'm not keeping a count of the number of days that Abhimanyu has been waiting for his Test debut. I am counting the years; it has been three years now. What is the job of a player? It is to score runs. He has done that. People said he didn't perform in two India A matches during the last tour of Australia and didn't get into the team, which is fair enough. But Karun Nair wasn't in the team during the period when Abhimanyu performed before the BGT. Karun wasn't picked for the Duleep Trophy or the Irani Trophy. Abhimanyu scored close to 864 runs if you consider the period from last year to the current year,' Abhimanyu's father Ranganathan Easwaran told TOI. 'Then how do they compare? I don't understand. They gave a chance to Karun Nair. Fair enough, he scored 800-plus runs. The selectors have put faith in him.' Ranganthan also said that his son looks depressed Ranganthan further said that his son looks depressed, 'My son looks a little depressed, but that is bound to happen. Some players jump the gun based on IPL performances which earn them a spot in the Test team. IPL performances should not be counted while selecting the team for the longest format. Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Irani Trophy should be the basis for Test selection,' he said. The 29-year-old, has played 103 first-class matches, scoring 7841 runs at an average of 48.70, Easwaran has smashed 27 centuries and 31 fifties.

Bumrah released from squad: Will he play Asia Cup or next lot of Tests in India?

London/New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was on Friday released from the national squad after completing his quota of three Tests in the five-match series against England and stakeholders in Indian cricket have already started discussing his next international assignment. The 31-year-old Bumrah bowled 119.4 overs across three games and took 14 wickets. 'Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the fifth Test of the series against England," BCCI announced in a release on Friday. Twice Bumrah returned five-wicket hauls — at the Headingley in the first Test and at the Lord's in the third game. However at Manchester, Bumrah conceded more than 100 runs in a single innings for the first time in his career. Bumrah now has 219 wickets in 48 Tests. Prior to India's departure, chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar had confirmed that the pace ace won't play more than three Tests keeping his workload management in mind. Which format will Bumrah feature next? ======================== India's next international assignment is Asia Cup T20 tournament and it would be a surprise if Bumrah opts to play the tournament considering that the next Test series against West Indies will start in less than a week's time after the event in the UAE. The Asia Cup will conclude on September 29 and the first Test against the West Indies will start in Ahmedabad on October 2 followed by the second match in New Delhi from October 10-14 . Then in November there are two Tests against South Africa. 'It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup," a BCCI source abreast with Indian selection process told PTI on conditions of anonymity. 'If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month's break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take," the source added. Bumrah is not expected to play many ODIs till the T20 World Cup at home. Maiden international gold fuels Sahil Jadhav's World Cup dream

Kolkata, Aug 1 (PTI) Winning an individual international gold medal on debut is a rare feat, and rising Indian compound archer Sahil Jadhav believes his triumph at the recently-concluded World University Games will fuel his dream of representing the country at the World Cup. The 24-year-old from Maharashtra, who had missed out on making the Indian team for the Archery World Cups in both 2024 and 2025, finally found his breakthrough on the world stage in Rhine-Ruhr after he was picked for the WUG. In the 2025 selection trials for the World Cup and World Championships held in Pune, he had finished sixth to miss the cut. However, Jadhav made the most of his selection for the WUG. He shocked experienced Kushal Dalal, a double Asia Cup gold medallist, in the semifinals before holding his nerve in a high-quality final to clinch the gold. 'It was a surreal moment for me," Jadhav told PTI in an interaction at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence here. 'This win really boosts my confidence and strengthen my dream to represent India at the World Cup. Seeing the flag go up on the podium is a moment I'll never forget." The final against Great Britain's Ajay Scott was of the highest level and what stood out was Jadhav's mental composure. Jadhav edged out Scott 149-148 in a near-flawless contest, as across five ends, only three nines were shot between them. Jadhav dropped one, while Scott dropped two that made all the difference. 'I just tried to stick to my process," Jadhav said on his mental stability. 'My coaches told me to stay focused and I'm happy I was able to do that." A student of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil University, Jadhav had never previously made it to India's highly competitive senior compound squad. WUG at the Rhine-Ruhr in Germany was his first opportunity and he grabbed it with both hands. Jadhav also bagged a team silver. He began his archery journey at Drushti Archery Academy in Satara, Maharashtra, under coach Pravin Sawant, alongside future world champions Aditi Swami and Ojas Deotale. But the path wasn't smooth. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his father Rajesh Jadhav lost his job, and his mother had to sell jewellery to support his training. 'Those were tough days, but my parents never let me feel the pressure. Even when I wasn't winning at the national level, they motivated me to keep going." Living far from home hasn't been easy either. 'Initially I was very homesick," Jadhav admitted. 'But I've learned that it's a small sacrifice to dream something big." The SAI NCOE felicitated Jadhav and 23-year-old Shrey Bhardwaj who achieved a rare sweep at the World Police and Fire Games held in Birmingham, USA from June 27-July 4. Bhardwaj, from Jamshedpur, won the recurve gold in outdoor, 3D, and field archery categories. The 3D format is a unique category where archers have to figure out the targets in semi darkness. 'Switching between three different formats is a real test of focus and stamina. To win all three is an amazing feeling," said Bhardwaj, who joined SAI NCOE Kolkata in 2024. SAI NCOE Kolkata trains 49 archers, including two in para discipline, 30 in recurve, 15 in compound section. The six-member coaching staff is headed by Athens Olympian Reena Kumari. In the last two years, NCOE Kolkata archers have won 23 national gold medals and five gold in global tournaments.
