Royal Armouries podcast series celebrates Warrior Women

BBC News09-03-2025

A podcast series celebrating the lives of six historical women has been released by one of West Yorkshire's top museums. The Leeds-based Royal Armouries has launched Warrior Women, which delves into the stories of spies, soldiers, monarchs and rebels who have played a significant role in conflicts. The museum said it wanted to challenge the "misconception that women have been absent from the front lines of history".The women covered include warrior queen Lakshmi Bai, sword master diplomat Chevalier d'Eon and Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, who is believed to have killed more than 300 Nazi soldiers during World War Two.
Spy Vera Leigh and samurai Nakano Takeko are two other historical figures celebrated by the podcast, which was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The other episode is dedicated to the 18th-century Royal Marine Hannah Snell, who disguised herself as a man to join the British armed forces. The museum said the stories would cover the complexities of the women's "struggles and triumphs against subjugation, fascism and colonialism all during periods of history where doing so was immeasurably more difficult due to their gender".
Podcast host Anna Ward, who works at the Armouries, said: "Warrior Women is not just a historical podcast; it is an important, progressive conversation about the role of women in history and society today."Their courage, resilience, and agency in conflict reflect the struggles still faced by women around the world today."We invite listeners to embark on this journey, rethinking the past and scrutinising what these stories might say about our present."

Love Island announce two new boys as heartbroken star sent home in huge twist

Love Island have announced two new singletons for this series. The new season kicked off on Monday, but this year's singles haven't had the chance to get comfortable in their couples, as ITV producers quickly started sending in bombshells left, right, and centre. The girls were the first to come under fire as American pool party waitress Antonia Laites entered the villa and immediately stole Shakira's man. This left her vulnerable to being dumped from the island, so she soon had to start chatting up the other girls' partners in a last-ditch attempt to save herself before the next firepit ceremony. However, now it is the men on the show who have had the pressure put on them as two new bombshells have entered the villa and are ready to crack on with their girls, following the devastating dumping of Sophie Lee. Here is what we know about the new lads... Shea, 25, from Bristol, said he is looking for someone bubbly, who's got "that spark". Unlike some of the other boys in the villa, this one is not looking to mess around. Shea wants to find a good girl with a "nice personality" to get serious with. It's also very important to him that she will be understanding of the important role his young son plays in his life. The scaffolder, who admits he spends most mornings in the gym, added: "I am ready again to look for something more serious. I'm 25 now, so I want to be settling down and have someone always by my side." Although Shea is looking for a wifey, his single days are not far behind him. When asked what he would be the boss of, he didn't hesitate to say "pulling girls". The cheeky gym buff added: "I'm confident to go up and introduce myself and say, 'You look beautiful', to get a conversation flowing." Essex-based content creator Remell, 24, wants to meet someone who is "bubbly, confident, ambitious and fun". He admitted he easily gets bored of being with the same person, so girls on the island better look out, because his head might be quickly turned. Remell joked that a film based on his love life up until now would be called "Once a Player, Not Always a Player", adding: "I'm the CEO of flirting. Sometimes it's just unintentional." The self improvement guru also opened up about his high standards, saying he needs a woman who can "stimulate him mentally" and his biggest ick is someone with no ambition or goals. He shared: "If I can't talk to a woman and pick her brain, have some discussion, that's a huge turn off for me as where are we going to be going?" The two new boys were introduced to the villa moments after the other Islanders were left devastated by Sophie's exit. The motivational speaker from Manchester was axed from the show after Shakira decided to steal her man in order to remain in the villa, so the bombshells have got some cheering up to do. .

R Kelly's lawyers accuse prison officials of ‘soliciting inmate to kill him'

R Kelly's lawyers are fighting to get him released from jail after claiming his life is in danger. The American singer and producer, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, was once credited as 'the King of R&B', releasing 18 albums and having over 75 million albums and singles, as well as working on albums by Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber and Mary J. Blige. He won Grammy, Billboard and American Music Awards, but his career abruptly ended in 2019 following his arrest and subsequent sentencing for racketeering and sex trafficking charges involving the sexual abuse of minors. Kelly, 58, is currently serving a 31-year combined sentence at a prison in North Carolina. However, his legal team have now filed an emergency motion calling from his immediate release from federal custody to home detention. In a filing made on Tuesday, reviewed by Variety, his attorney Beau B. Brindley claims that the team had 'explicit evidence that officials solicited an inmate to murder him while in custody'. His counsel provided a sworn declaration from Mikeal Glenn Stine, a terminally ill inmate, who said that officials 'offered him freedom in his final days in exchange for Kelly's murder'. Stine, a member of the neo-Nazi prison gang Aryan Brotherhood, claimed that he was told Kelly and his attorneys were planning to expose damaging information, as with the filing alleging that officials violated attorney-client privilege by intercepting personal correspondence. He also stated that officials told him he would be charged with Kelly's murder, but that evidence would be mishandled and there would be no conviction. After arriving at Kelly's unit in March, Stine said he was prepared to kill the rapper but changed his mind and ended up telling the rapper that 'Bureau of Prisons officials directed him to carry out his murder'. Kelly's lawyers have claimed that last month they were told a second member of the Aryan Brotherhood who was told by officials to kill both Kelly and Stine. They have said Kelly is in danger remaining in custody with other members of the Brotherhood. 'The threat to Mr. Kelly's life continues each day that no action is taken,' they wrote in the filing. 'More A.B. members are accumulating at his facility. More than one has already been approached about carrying out his murder. 'One of them will surely do what Mr. Stine has not, thereby burying the truth about what happened in this case along with Robert Kelly.' More Trending In 2023 Kelly was sentenced to 20 years in prison for child sex crimes in Chicago while already serving a 30-year prison sentence over sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York. The judge ruled he could serve 19 years at the same time, meaning the child sex crimes only added one year to his existing sentence. His convictions included three counts of coercing minors into sexual activity and three of producing sex tapes involving a minor. Metro has contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office for comment.
