Lewis Hamilton comment on Sky F1 commentator and Martin Brundle speaks volumes
David Croft and Martin Brundle are the voices of Formula 1 and thanks to Lewis Hamilton, they'll be taking their commentary and analysis skills onto the big screen for this summer's F1 film
Sky Sports commentator David Croft has revealed how Lewis Hamilton made sure that both he and Martin Brundle were given roles in the upcoming F1 film. Ferrari star Hamilton is a co-producer and consultant on the film which stars Brad Pitt and releases in cinemas on June 25.
The British seven-time world champion has been described as 'instrumental' by director Joseph Kosinski and if not for him, Croft and Brundle might not have been involved. The pair have become synonymous with Formula 1, with Croft having led commentary since 2006, working for both the BBC and Sky Sports, while ex-driver Brundle has provided analysis since 1997.
Their voices will be heard in the £240million film after Hamilton 'endorsed' them. "He [Hamilton] said, 'If you want to make it authentic commentary, you need Martin and Crofty'. I really appreciated that," Croft told the Times.
"Martin and I, we've done five or six sessions, including filming in a commentary box. Hopefully, it sounds as authentic as a normal commentary because they did allow Martin and I to veer off script and call it how we'd call it, which is great."
Croft added: "He's [Brundle] the expert, he's the analyst, he's the man that's gone and driven cars and raced in these cars, and I'm the broadcaster, the journalist, who's not afraid to go, right, 'What do you mean by that?'"
A section of Hamilton's fan base still aren't over what Croft said about the ex-Mercedes driver's controversial defeat to Max Verstappen in December 2021 which decided that year's championship. Hamilton would've won a record-breaking eighth world title, surpassing Michael Schumacher.
But Verstappen benefitted from a hotly-debated stewards decision, with Croft saying that 'live sport' and it can 'go against you'. Some Hamilton fans haven't forgiven him and he revealed that he still gets messages 'on an almost daily basis'.
"We still remember it," Croft reminded fans. "The rules weren't followed. We know that, we've read the report. It's not going to change. What can I say?
"Probably nothing, because whatever I do say, it's going to be wrong. So I try and ignore it, to be fair. We all know what happened, but it isn't going to change I'm afraid, Lewis Hamilton fans. You still contact us, on an almost daily basis, about Abu Dhabi 2021."

But it appears that Hamilton has a respect for Croft, who warned the 40-year-old that his move to Ferrari may not work out. "I have a theory that [team-mate Charles Leclerc ] will win every battle, both in qualifying and in the race, against the seven-time world champion," Croft said ahead of the season starting in March.
"Lewis is no rookie, but in recent years at Mercedes, he has lost motivation. He lost it precisely when he didn't get that multi-year contract with the British team."
That hasn't proved to be the case, with Hamilton winning the Chinese Sprint race. However, neither Hamilton nor Leclerc have won a Grand Prix, something which they'll be aiming to put right when F1 returns for this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at 2pm on Sunday.

The screenplay, penned by Joe Penhall, Duncan Campbell, and Mark Seal, brings to life the notorious Hatton Garden safe deposit burglary - a heist carried out over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in April 2015 by a band of seasoned elderly criminals. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Francesca Annis, Charlie Cox, Jim Broadbent, Paul Whitehouse and Ray Winstone. It tells the tale of a group of retired crooks (and one young alarms expert) who plan and pull off a daring robbery in London's jewellery quarter during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. However, their final big score quickly descends into chaos as greed takes hold. Despite its stellar cast and gripping real-life story, King of Thieves failed to make a significant impact either commercially or critically. Box Office Mojo reports that the film only raked in $7,518 domestically in the United States and Canada, with just $3,502 earned during its opening weekend. Globally, the film grossed around $11.5 million at the box office, reports the Daily Record. The film's scenes were predominantly shot in central London and around Margate in Kent, showcasing venues like the Wig and Pen Pub, the Nayland Rock Hotel, Harbour Arm, outside Turner Contemporary, and Margate railway station. Additionally, one can spot Abbott's Cliff in Dover during the train sequence when Brian Reader (played by Michael Caine) heads to Margate. Both critics and audiences seemed underwhelmed by how the film was brought to life. Echoing the sentiment, a critic wrote: "The Hatton Gardens heist was a ballsy operation. You can't say the same about King of Thieves." Another reviewer pointed out: "King of Thieves really should have delivered way more cinematic swag than it does." Meanwhile, a commentator dissected the film's tone: "Torn between jaunty genre hijinks and a bleaker streak of realism, it's a strangely stiff, lethargic account of a cracking tale." The stinging critiques continued with a reviewer saying: "There is one joke in King of Thieves, and it's that the thieves are old. That's it-that's the whole movie," while another lamented: "Marsh had his hands on some very fancy jewels. What he didn't have, sadly, was the script to make them gleam." The audience feedback was similarly tepid, with one viewer saying: "Passes the time but little else. Tries hard to be both a comedy and a thriller but doesn't really succeed at either. For such a daring burglary, this could have surely been done a lot better." Another cinema-goer likened the film to the bungled robbery it portrays, adding: "Based on a real account of a robbery in London and featuring a superb all British cast. Very much like the botched heist, the plot here is in shambles all over the place." A different viewer didn't mince their words expressing their disappointment, saying: "It's poorly written. The heist isn't that exciting. The humour isn't funny." Meanwhile, another audience member remarked: "Not a gripping tale. At times the audience were laughing - was this supposed to be a comedy? ? ? Difficult to remember the names of the was who? "Undoubtedly the royalty of British male actors but the story was weak. It could have been much better if there was character and story development of the Police activity pitted against the perpetrators. Shame - not worth a look."
