Humanoid Robots Still Lack AI Technology, Unitree CEO Says

Mint4 days ago
(Bloomberg) -- Artificial intelligence technology to get humanoid robots into the mainstream remains a key challenge for the sector, according to the founder of one of China's prominent robot developers.
The level of expertise could be reached in as little as one to three years, said Wang Xingxing, chief executive officer of Hangzhou Unitree Technology Co Ltd. He likened the environment now to the ChatGPT breakout moment in 2022 when OpenAI's chatbot became an instant hit and made AI a household term.
'It feels like we are at a point of one to three years before chatGPT emerged,' Hangzhou Unitree Technology Co Ltd. CEO Wang Xingxing told the World Robots Conference in Beijing on Saturday. 'The industry knows which direction we should go and it's just that no one has materialized that.'
His prediction comes amid a race among Chinese robotics companies to make their products affordable even as real-world applications remain vague, something Wang himself said at the conference.
Companies in China have put human-shaped robots for trials at factories to perform tasks like sorting materials and quality checks. A key challenge for large scale deployment at the moment is lack of good AI models for humanoid robots, Wang said.
Unitree is tapping growing investor and consumer euphoria around China's prowess in an emergent field without a clear leader yet.
Unitree rolled out its R1 bot for 39,900 yuan ($5,900) though it has yet to be put into mass production, Wang said. Shenzhen-based Engine AI also said a robot starting at 38,500 yuan is coming soon.
In 2025, Chinese humanoids ran a half-marathon, competed in a kick-boxing tournament and played football. But those events weren't exactly technological triumphs — most of the half-marathon participants stumbled, fumbled or failed to complete the race. Still, they underscored the country's ambitions to catch up with and surpass the US in cutting-edge areas.
Unitree's profile soared after its humanoids were featured at this year's nationally televised Spring Festival gala. Earlier this week, it released a video of a mechanical dog scaling slopes, spinning on one leg and navigating rocky terrain — sending Chinese robotics shares to new highs.

Britannia investors may have to wait longer for pure magic growth amid margin pressures

Britannia Industries Ltd's shares have beaten the Nifty FMCG index so far in 2025, gaining 12% versus a 3% drop in the sectoral index. But incremental gains in the stock may be tough for two main reasons. First, valuations aren't enticing enough, keeping significant near-term upside at bay. Second, the recently declared June quarter (Q1FY26) results offered no triggers for the stock, with lacklustre volume and margin. The stock trades at 46 times estimated FY27 earnings, as per Bloomberg. Emkay Global Financial Services finds it 'fairly valued" at current levels. The broking firm's analyst Nitin Gupta believes Britannia's Phantom Stock Option Scheme could weigh on near-term performance, as any stock price appreciation from strong execution would be rewarded back to management, impacting the company's reported financials. Britannia's phantom option plan is an equity-linked cash incentive scheme for its top management. The phantom stock amount depends on the company's share price, making it lumpy in nature with the potential to have a meaningful impact on the operating profit margin. For instance, the hit from this in Q1FY26 was ₹52 crore, making it a key contributor to the 20% year-on-year rise in employee costs to ₹242 crore. Higher staff costs meant consolidated Ebitda margin contracted 135 basis points (bps) to 16.4%. Still, the 3% fall in other expenses helped soften the blow a bit, given the larger 310 bps drop in gross margin to 40.3% owing to elevated commodity prices. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of decline in both Ebitda and gross margins. Falling prices bode well for margins The price of flour rose 8% year-on-year in Q1FY26, while refined palm oil increased 45% and cocoa was up 35%. Sequentially, the prices of flour, refined palm oil and cocoa were down. Sugar and laminates remained within manageable limits. The sequential easing in some commodities is encouraging, setting the stage for margin expansion in the coming quarters. Price hikes taken should also aid margin. The sequential improvement of 21 bps in gross margin in Q1FY26 lags expectations. Mihir P. Shah and Riya Patni, analysts from Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities (India), raised their FY26-28 earnings-per-share forecast for Britannia by about 2-3% to factor in price hikes and lower raw material prices. Price increases drove most of the 9% year-on-year growth in Britannia's Q1FY26 total operating revenue to ₹4,622 crore. Volume growth decelerated sequentially for the third quarter in a row to 2%, coming in below estimates. However, transaction growth, a measure of how many consumers are interacting with its brands, was at a sturdy 12%. Rural outpaces urban Britannia saw strong double-digit growth in rural markets, while urban areas posted high single-digit growth. Its four focus states: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan, clocked 2.7 times the growth other states. Overall market share was largely flat in Q1FY26, though the East saw some turmoil due to Britannia's distribution restructuring. Adjacent categories such as rusk, wafers, and croissants saw good traction and premium products such as Pure Magic Choco Stars, Harry Potter Pure Magic Choco Frames performed well. With a demand pickup seen in overall FMCG consumption, Nomura's analysts expect volumes to start improving from here and price hikes undertaken in Q1 to propel overall sales growth to double digits in FY26. Note that Britannia expects the gap between volume and revenue to stay in the range of 6-8% over the next two or three quarters. What matters for investors now is the pace of recovery in volume and margin.

Banks drag Australian shares lower, CBA tumbles nearly 5%

Aug 13 (Reuters) - Australian shares fell on Wednesday from a record close scaled in the previous session, as Commonwealth Bank of Australia led index heavyweight financials lower on concerns about its bottom line. The S&P/ASX 200 index slipped 0.4% to 8,850.10 by 0059 GMT. The benchmark index rose 0.4% to a record close of 8,880.80 on Tuesday, after the Reserve Bank of Australia reduced interest rates by 25 basis points, as widely anticipated, while signalling further policy easing could be on the cards. Top lender Commonwealth Bank of Australia declined nearly 5% on Wednesday, hitting its lowest level since mid-May and pulling the banking sub-index 1.8% lower to its weakest point since August 5. CBA, considered one of the most expensive banks in the world on a price-to-earnings ratio, reported a record annual profit, but analysts said its bottom line was boosted by a lift in trading income which can be volatile. National Australia Bank and Westpac slipped 1.6% and 1.3%, respectively. Miners climbed 0.9% after iron ore futures closed higher overnight as steel mills in Chinese production hub Tangshan were ordered to halt operations. Mining giants BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue gained between 1% and 1.3%. Tech stocks rose 0.8%, tracking gains in their U.S. peers, while gold stocks advanced 0.6% after a U.S. inflation report raised hopes for a Federal Reserve interest rate cut in September. Among individual stocks, Treasury Wine Estates rose 5.6% and Insurance Australia Group climbed 1.8% on higher annual profits. AGL Energy was the weakest performer on the benchmark index with a 12.3% drop, after the power producer posted a 21% drop in annual underlying earnings, missing market estimates. In New Zealand, the benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index rose 0.6% to 12,840.70. (Reporting by Sneha Kumar in Bengaluru; Editing by Subhranshu Sahu)

‘How to turn pics into videos using Grok': Elon Musk responds to mom's tweet on AI

Maye Musk tweeted a step-by-step guide for people on how to use Grok Imagine, which helps users turn any photo into a short video without leaving the X app. Her post received a response from her son, Elon Musk. Snippet from AI video of Maye Musk created using Grok (L) and Elon Musk (R). (X/@mayemusk, Reuters) Maye Musk's guide for Grok Imagine: 'How to get still photos into videos. This photo is 10 years old. Open @grok and click on Create Videos. On the lower left square with a +, choose a photo. Uploading and Generating Video appear. Then post on X. Imagine,' she wrote. Her tweet is accompanied by a short video she created using a throwback image. The clip captures her getting out of a car in a multi-coloured dress. How did Elon Musk react? Highlighting his mother's tweet, Musk posted, 'How to use @Grok Imagine to turn your photos into videos.' Interestingly, Grok, too, responded to Elon Musk's tweet. The AI model's official X profile posted, 'Thanks for the demo, Elon! Grok Imagine turns static photos into dynamic videos effortlessly. Excited to see what users create—upload yours and share!' What did social media say? An individual wrote, 'Elon Musk, help your Mother rapidly complete the culmination of her lifetime. Digitise all of her photos to celebrate her life. It would be a powerful example of Groks POWER, and Maye will live forever for her many grandchildren of today and tomorrow to really understand the woman who started it all.' Another exclaimed, 'Oh! Wow! That's awesome.' A third remarked, 'Maye is so stunning, what wonderful keepsakes these videos are becoming.' However, there were also critiques. One of them posted, 'I like how all the Musk lovers pretend like GPT didn't do this 2 years ago.'
