Tourist from US mainland who flew to Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny concert was fatally shot, police say

Ruiz said Mares was an innocent bystander. He was with three other friends who told police they were in Puerto Rico for one of Bad Bunny's 30 concerts, which have attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the U.S. territory.
Mares was shot on the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Puerto Rico's largest public hospital, where he died, authorities said.
Ruiz said police don't yet know what the people were arguing about and don't have a description of the shooter. 'We have very little information,' he said.
Ruiz added that Mares' three friends also were from New York. He didn't have their hometowns.
San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero told reporters Sunday that he would share footage from security cameras in the area, adding that Mares' partner had opted not to visit la Perla with him.

Police said the incident occurred at 4:13 a.m., even though a municipal code approved in 2023 states that authorized businesses in San Juan can only serve or sell alcohol from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and up to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday if Monday is a holiday.
La Perla is located on the outskirts of a historic district popular with tourists known as Old San Juan. A couple hundred people live in the shantytown, which once served as Puerto Rico's biggest distribution point for heroin and was known for its violence.
Police used to avoid the community, which used to have a sign proclaiming, 'Not open to visitors. Do not enter.'
But violence eased when hundreds of federal agents raided the slum in 2011 and arrested dozens of people, including a well-known community leader who was later convicted.
The neighborhood became even safer and more welcoming after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featured it in their hit, 'Despacito.'
But isolated violence persists.
In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said a person told them to stop filming inside the community.
Then in April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire after police said he and a friend were attacked following a drug purchase. Police said the victims were trying to take pictures of La Perla after being warned not to do so.
The island of 3.2 million people has reported 277 killings so far this year, compared with 325 killings in the same period last year.

Wake held for Queens man killed in stray bullet shooting in Puerto Rico
A wake was held Saturday for 25-year-old Kevin Mares, a Queens man who was killed while on vacation in Puerto Rico last weekend. Mares, his girlfriend and two others were on the island for a Bad Bunny concert, then they went to a nightclub in the seaside community of La Perla, known for drugs and violence. He doesn't even imagine what he has caused to our family," mourner Lilian Saenz-Mares said. Family members are waiting for justice. "We just hope that God forgives him. We will forgive him as well because everyone deserves forgiveness," Saenz-Mares said. Kevin Mares is described as kind-hearted and loyal. He loved cooking, growing vegetables and had a passion for animals. He was studying to be a veterinarian. His neighbor's last memory of him was from a month ago. "He just rescued a kitten where he works, and they were giving him milk," neighbor Alexandria Jaramillo said. As loved ones continue to grieve, we're told he had been thinking about the future with his girlfriend. "He was planning to propose [to] her this fall," Saenz-Mares said. Kevin Mares leaves behind his parents, a 15-year-old brother, and countless friends and family. Another visitation will be held at Frederick Funeral Home on Sunday evening, followed by a Mass on Monday before he is cremated.

Officials in Puerto Rico have charged a 37-year-old man for allegedly killing a tourist from New York who was visiting to attend a Bad Bunny concert. Kalel Jorell Martinez Bristol has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 25-year-old Kevin Mares, who was shot and killed on Aug. 10, the Puerto Rico Department of Justice said in a press release obtained by ABC News on Friday. Along with the first-degree murder charge, Martinez Bristol also faces "two additional charges under Puerto Rico Weapons Law, for possessing and carrying a firearm without a license, as well as discharging and pointing a firearm," officials said. On Aug. 10 at approximately 4 a.m., Mares was with friends in La Perla, a neighborhood in San Juan, Puerto Rico, when a "heated discussion escalated" nearby, officials said. The suspect then shot and wounded two people and fatally struck Mares, who "had no relation to the altercation," officials said. In an interview with WABC, Mares' parents described the 25-year-old as a "lovely son." While his parents are originally from Mexico, Mares and his younger brother were born and raised in Queens, his parents told WABC. "He cared about all of us, his family, his friends. He has a lot of friends who's really going to miss him, too," his mother, Sandra Mares, told WABC. The family will be holding a memorial service for Mares on Saturday. Justice Secretary Lourdes L.
