Why this Brazilian football veteran refuses to leave Hong Kong after 17 years

More than 17 years after she handed over the DVDs that secured her honeymooning son a sudden move to Hong Kong, Helio Goncalves' mother would like him back in Brazil to work in the family's boat licensing business.
Released by Kitchee last month after 11 years at the club, centre-back Goncalves is hunting for a new employer. But the 39-year-old, who spent his opening six years in Hong Kong with Citizen, is planning to keep mum waiting.
'Hong Kong is my place, I became a better man here – spiritually,' Goncalves said. 'I raised my family here.
'Also, I believe in God and, in this period, I have become more attached.'
Goncalves lent on that faith last year when the youngest of his three children, five-year-old Aron, became gravely ill after contracting Guillain-Barre Syndrome while on holiday in Orlando.

'It was very severe,' Goncalves said. 'First, the movement in his legs stopped, then it moved higher. Everything stopped working. He couldn't move his eyes; even his lungs were affected. He was in a lot of danger.'

Hong Kong fencer Cheung Ka-long shown red card, but teammate then wins first Asian title

Olympic champion Cheung Ka-long was denied the chance to reclaim his regional throne after a controversial decision at the Asian Fencing Championships in Bali on Thursday, but the glory went instead to compatriot Ryan Choi Chun-yin, who won his maiden Asian title. Advertisement In Cheung's second-round men's foil match, he was adjudged by the head referee from South Africa to have hit China's Mo Ziwei in his head intentionally, after the red light on the piste signalling a point for the Hongkonger had been lit. The point would have tied the match at 14 points each. But former Asian champion Mo fell onto the ground and asked for a video review, and suggested Cheung had hit him in his mask. Mo, who won in Wuxi in 2023, called for medical help and minutes later, referee Eugene Chua Wee-hong of Singapore – after head referee Irina Knysch stepped in – showed two-time Asian champion Cheung a straight red card and awarded Mo the winning point, and the Chinese fencer progressed with a 15-13 win. Cheung and Greg Koenig, head coach of the city's foil team, debated with the referees for a long time, but their efforts were in vain. Cheung Ka-long reposted a story from a supporter onto his social media after the loss. Photo: Instagram Hong Kong team officials said the rule book signalled a red card if a fencer was deemed to have 'intentionally' hit the opponent in the head.

China's towering teen basketball ace Zhang Ziyu stars again in Asia Cup build-up

China look set to unleash their 2.26-metre (7ft 5in) 'moving Great Wall' at the Women's Asia Cup after teenager Zhang Ziyu put in another towering display days after her debut. The 18-year-old centre scored 18 points as China beat great rivals Japan 101-92 on Wednesday in Xian in a warm-up for the regional tournament next month on home soil. It was her third appearance for the senior Chinese squad, having helped them to blowout victories over Bosnia and Herzegovina over the weekend. Chinese state media dubbed her and gangly centre Han Xu the 'Twin Towers'. Zhang's looming presence on court – footage showed her barely needing to jump to make a basket – seemed to stump Japan head coach Corey Gaines. Zhang Ziyu greets an umpire before the match against Japan in Xian. Beijing's point man on Hong Kong affairs meets local university heads

Beijing's point man on Hong Kong affairs held discussions with the heads of several universities in the city on Thursday, in the first publicly known meeting with leaders of local tertiary institutions. Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, also visited Kai Tak Sports Park and met politicians on the third day of his fact-finding visit. His discussions with the heads of the institutions came on the heels of six publicly funded universities climbing the ranks of an influential league table produced by education information firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The University of Hong Kong (HKU) rose to 11th place, surpassing two prestigious tertiary education institutions in mainland China. The meeting, held at government headquarters, ran for nearly three hours, with attendees including Xiang Zhang from HKU, Nancy Ip Yuk-yu from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Dennis Lo Yuk-ming from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
