
What scientists found in Kuwaiti waters is a game-changer for marine life
Published in the scientific journal Botanica Marina, the study is the first of its kind in Kuwait and puts an end to years of scientific uncertainty surrounding the cause of harmful algal blooms in the region. The research identified Karenia papilionacea, Karenia selliformis, and Karlodinium ballantinum using advanced high-resolution microscopy and genetic analysis of large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA) from live strains collected between 2014 and 2021.
Dr. Manal Al-Kandari, lead researcher at KISR's Environmental and Life Sciences Research Center, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the study confirmed the presence of K. papilionacea, with seven strains showing a 99 percent genetic similarity. It also reaffirmed K. selliformis as the species linked to the 1999 fish kill, one of the most significant environmental incidents in Kuwait's marine history.
Notably, the study also recorded the presence of Karlodinium ballantinum for the first time in both Kuwaiti waters and the wider Arabian Gulf—marking a major scientific milestone for the country.
In collaboration with the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, the KISR team successfully isolated and analyzed ten strains of these harmful algae. The resulting data has established a foundational scientific database to enhance Kuwait's capacity to monitor and manage toxic algal blooms.
'These findings will support the development of early warning systems, help protect marine ecosystems and fisheries, and bolster national food security,' Dr. Al-Kandari said. She also highlighted the creation of a reference collection of live strains now preserved at KISR as a valuable national and regional resource for future research.
Dr. Al-Kandari praised the continued backing of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences for its support of marine research initiatives. She emphasized the need to sustain such scientific efforts to safeguard the health and sustainability of Kuwait's marine environment.

KU Center unveils strategy to further empower women
KUWAIT: Kuwait University's Faculty of Social Sciences on Tuesday launched a new strategy for its Women's Research & Studies Center, aligning with the national development agenda outlined in Kuwait Vision 2035. Dr Nourah Shuaibi, head of the center, outlined the new strategy's three core pillars: A sustainable, diverse economy focused on supporting women's participation in the labor market and entrepreneurship; social justice, promoting gender equality and equal opportunities; and creative human development, emphasizing investment in human capital and building a productive society. 'The strategy believes in empowering university students to shape the future and support sustainable development,' Shuaibi said, adding that the center's values are rooted in capacity-building, scientific research, and strong partnerships. Upcoming activities include specialized workshops, community awareness campaigns, and an annual conference on women and sustainable development. The rollout of these initiatives is set to begin in September.

Kuwait's DDI uses AI to identify new drug targets for diabetes
KUWAIT: A senior scientist at Kuwait's Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI) has harnessed cutting-edge artificial intelligence to unlock new insights into the molecular mechanisms of diabetes, paving the way for future drug development. Dr Anwar Mohammed, Head of the Precision Health Analysis Unit and Senior Scientist at DDI, led a research study that demonstrates how AI can revolutionize our understanding of complex biological structures related to diabetes. The research was recently published in the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. By using AlphaFold 3, a powerful AI model developed by Google DeepMind, Dr Anwar modeled the interaction between the KLF15 zinc finger domain and DNA — a key element in understanding type 2 diabetes at a molecular level. The accuracy of 'AlphaFold 3' was confirmed by comparing the modeled structure with experimental X-ray crystallography data, said DDI in a press statement. Dr Anwar also incorporated molecular dynamics simulations and binding energy calculations to identify critical hotspots that could support the design of targeted therapies. 'These applications can help understand disease mechanisms and design targeted therapies which are anticipated to yield advancements in healthcare and drug discovery,' said the statement. Dr Anwar's research highlights the growing role of AI in structural biology, a field that seeks to understand the three-dimensional structures of biomolecules like proteins and DNA and how that is related to their interactions. His findings emphasize AI's ability to accelerate the development of targeted therapies — especially crucial for chronic diseases like diabetes. Dr Anwar also credited the institute and its founding organization for enabling this work. He expressed gratitude for DDI's and KFAS' continuous support for Kuwaiti scientists in the field of research, science and medicine. Scientific Center keen on preserving Kuwait's marine environment

Deputy Director General of Visitor Experience at the Scientific Center Mohammad Al-Sanousi told KUNA that the center held a specialized exhibition entitled 'Our Sea' on the sidelines of the 'Shark Week' activities held on July 17, noting that 'the exhibition started on Thursday, and concluded on Saturday.' Al-Sanousi explained that this specialized exhibition includes environmental pavilions with the participation of the Environment Public Authority (EPA), the General Directorate of Coast Guard, the Kuwait Diving Team, the Kuwait Heritage Society, the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), and governmental and private bodies that support the environmental sustainability process in the State of Kuwait.
