Javon Bennett buries eight treys; Dayton advances to next round of NIT

Javon Bennett buried eight three-pointers, tied for the second most treys in a single game at Dayton.
On Wednesday, UD beat Florida Atlantic, 86-79, at Boca Raton, Florida.
Bennett led all scorers with 30 points while Nate Santos had 15. Enoch Cheeks added 12 points.
UD is the No. 1 overall seed in its region, but the game was moved to Baldwin Arena in Florida because the First Four was being held at UD Arena.
The Flyers improved 23-10 overall.

Both teams shot over 50 percent for the game. The Owls were even hotter to start as Baba Miller's dunk put them ahead, 27-22, with 9:00 left in the first half.
FAU led, 33-28, at the 7:17 mark of the opening half but Posh Alexander scored five straight points to tie the game at 33-33. Zed Key added three consecutive points to give Dayton a 36-33 advantage.
Keleb Glenn scored five consecutive points for Florida Atlantic to reclaim the lead, 38-37, with 2:08 until halftime. UD ended the first half on a 7-0 run as they led, 44-38, at halftime.
Bennett buried three treys in the second half as the Flyers extended it to 59-44. Bennett added two more three-pointers to give Dayton its largest lead, 68-49, at the 11:10 mark.
UD led 78-61 with 5:42 to play but the Owls outscored them, 18-6, to get within five points, 84-79, with 33 seconds remaining. Bennett and Cheeks each made a free throw to seal the game.
Dayton will next play Chattanooga in the Second Round of the NIT either Saturday or Sunday.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford ends mystery, returns to practice
The Los Angeles Rams welcomed back their franchise quarterback on Monday. The Rams posted a video of Matthew Stafford walking onto the practice field dressed in full pads. Stafford's practice participation is great news for a Rams team as they ramp up toward the regular season. Prior to Monday, Stafford's hadn't been able to participate in training camp because of an aggravated disk in his back. The veteran quarterback was supposed to practice in some capacity on Monday, Aug. 11, after a throwing session, but he didn't 'feel great' following the workout. Stafford was scheduled to have another workout on Saturday, Aug. 16, but the Rams have been discreet about whether or not the workout happened. The 37-year-old quarterback is entering his fifth season with the Rams and 17th overall. Stafford and the Rams kickoff the regular season in less than three weeks against the Houston Texans on Sept. 7 at SoFi Stadium. Jimmy Garoppolo is the team's backup quarterback. Stetson Bennett is No. 3 on the depth chart. Bennett started both preseason games for the Rams. He passed for 324 yards, three touchdowns and had only one interception in a 23-22 exhibition win over the Los Angeles Chargers. However, neither Garoppolo nor Bennett can run the Rams' offense like Stafford. Stafford is the engine to the Rams' offensive attack. Stafford was named the Rams MVP last year after he completed 340-of-517 pass attempts for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. Stafford helped the Rams win Super Bowl 56 in his first season in Los Angeles. Watch every throw from Rams QB Stetson Bennett's outstanding 324-yard game vs. Chargers
This was unquestionably the best game of Bennett's career It may only be the preseason, but for players like Stetson Bennett, it's the biggest opportunity he'll get to prove he's deserving of a roster spot. On Saturday night against the Chargers, Bennett made his strongest case yet for a place on the 53-man roster. It was not only his best game as a member of the Los Angeles Rams, but it was the most impressive performance by any quarterback in the NFL this preseason. Bennett completed 28 of 40 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, posting a passer rating of 108.8. That came after he had 188 yards and two touchdowns with a 100.7 passer rating the week prior. It wasn't just the stats that made Bennett's performance so strong. He looked comfortable and confident on the field, making almost no mistakes from the pocket. Bennett made accurate throws off of play action with free rushers in his face. He threw a dime to Mario Williams for a 38-yard touchdown where he fit the ball between two defenders on a rope. And when the game was on the line, he delivered with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tru Edwards with 5 seconds left to take a one-point lead – after a 40-yard bomb on fourth-and-10. It's why they call him the 'Mailman.' If you missed any or all of Bennett's outing on Saturday, the NFL graciously shared a cut-up of every throw and run by the third-year quarterback in the Rams' 23-22 win. It was as good a performance as you'll see by a third-stringer in the preseason, looking like the National Championship-winning quarterback from Georgia again. Bennett is just about a lock for the 53-man roster after his display on Saturday, especially with Matthew Stafford's status very much up in the air. It's possible Bennett will be Jimmy Garoppolo's backup to start the year, putting him one injury away from potentially seeing the field. That's obviously not what the Rams want but having seen his play this preseason, they can at least feel comfortable with his progression this offseason.
