Amazon confirms £40bn investment into new Northampton warehouse

ITV News5 hours ago

Billions of pounds will be invested into a new Amazon factory in the east which will be one of four across the UK for the multi-national technological giant.
Amazon confirmed the £40bn plans to be spent over the next three years on the new sites.
This includes a new fulfilment centre in Northampton which is due to open in 2026 and will create 2,000 new jobs.
The three other centres will be in Hull and the East Midlands and new delivery centres stations will also be created across the country.
Amazon confirmed the £40bn would provide more than 4,000 jobs across all of its new sites, with the vast majority being outside of London and the south east.
The major plans come the same week as the Government's Industrial Strategy which the Labour Party says is aimed at "slashing energy bills for industry, increasing skills, and boosting investment".
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who met Amazon's CEO last week ahead of the announcement, said: "Amazon's £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain's basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business. "It means thousands of new jobs—real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families."
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the investment was a 'powerful endorsement of Britain's economic strengths'.
It includes part of the £8bn previously announced in September 2024 for building, operating, and maintaining data centres in the UK, to support the UK's AI industry.
Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, said: "When Amazon invests, it's not only in London and the South East – we're bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK's economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live."

Omagh victims intend to use public inquiry to ‘heap shame' on Irish Government

The inquiry also heard that victims are 'sick and tired of platitudes, false assurances and broken promises' from Dublin over the bombing. The Omagh Bombing Inquiry, chaired by Lord Turnbull, is hearing opening statements from core participants. On Tuesday the focus moved to statements from the legal representatives of bereaved families. The Real IRA bomb in the Co Tyrone town in August 1998 killed 29 people, including a woman who was pregnant with twins, in the worst single atrocity in the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The public inquiry was set up by the previous government to examine whether the explosion could have been prevented by the UK authorities. Barrister Alan Kane KC delivered a statement on behalf of the families of Omagh victims represented by solicitor John McBurney. These include the families of Debra-Anne Cartwright, Olive Hawkes, Julia Hughes, Philomena Skelton, Samantha McFarland, Alan Radford, Lorraine Wilson, who were all killed in the massacre, as well as several other people who were injured. He told the inquiry: 'It is important that we always keep in focus that it was republican terrorists under the name Real IRA who planned and planted the Omagh bomb. They alone are responsible for the loss and hurt caused by it. 'On hearing the accounts of so many at the commemorative hearings, it beggars all belief as to what else was intended other than murderous carnage by leaving a bomb in a peaceful town's main street on a busy sunny Saturday afternoon where so many innocent women, children and men were likely to be. 'The preventability of the murders and injuries was at all times within the absolute control of the Real IRA.' He added: 'Our clients are of the clear belief that whatever aspects of preventability may lie at the door of the UK state authorities, blame, to a greater or lesser extent, rests with the state authorities in the Republic of Ireland. 'Our clients again renew their call for a parallel inquiry to be immediately established by the Government of the Republic of Ireland, a call that they should not be required to repeat. 'Our clients remain greatly disappointed at the lack of any commitment of the authorities in the Republic of Ireland to meaningfully assist this inquiry. 'They regard the memorandum of understanding, agreed with the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Ireland as wholly unsatisfactory. 'Our clients wish to use this inquiry to heap shame on the Government of the Republic of Ireland for their failures.' Mr Kane said there was a 'moral, human and legal imperative' on the Dublin Government to set up its own inquiry. He said: 'As a country with a professed European inclination, it is extremely regrettable that the Republic of Ireland continues to be in breach of Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights in failing to ensure there has ever been any effective investigation into the death of the people to whom they owe that duty. 'There are preventability issues which clearly arise from the territorial origin of the Omagh bomb, and the cowardly refuge which its perpetrators enjoyed within the boundaries of the Republic of Ireland.' The barrister said his clients had likened the work of the public inquiry to an MOT vehicle test. He said: 'To their disbelief, they are told only the engine can be inspected, all that exists beyond the engine, including the body, the suspension, the brakes, the contents of the boot, cannot be examined. 'Such an MOT would clearly be unfit for purpose. 'This inquiry can only examine the parts of the car made in the UK as it were, the preventability, it cannot examine the rest of the car where the terrorists sat, or the boot area where the deadly bomb was hidden. 'If this inquiry could examine the whole car then it would also be able to examine any preventability issues which fall on the Republic of Ireland state authorities and all the faults and defects in the vehicle could be identified.' The barrister referred to comments from former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern that no stone would be left unturned to bring those responsible for the 1998 atrocity to justice. He said: 'That is a promise which has significance only for the ignoring and disregarding of it which has taken place over the almost 27 years which has passed since the Omagh bombing.' Mr Kane added: 'I have the authority of those I represent to say they are sick and tired of platitudes, false assurances, broken promises and grand but empty words from the state authorities of the Republic of Ireland. 'Their resolute refusal to institute a parallel inquiry and their ongoing failure to provide real and meaningful cooperation with this inquiry speaks far louder than their words.' The barrister referred to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreed between the inquiry and the Irish Government to allow access to material held in Dublin. Mr Kane said the MOU is 'redundant' due to the terms of how it was drafted. He said: 'First because the assessment of relevance is in the power of the Republic of Ireland, secondly because it only relates to relevance concerning preventability by the UK state authorities. 'This is an unacceptable yet significant escape clause for the Republic of Ireland. 'Under the memorandum the Republic of Ireland state authorities, and therefore any information which reflects badly on them, could be determined by them to be irrelevant.' He added: 'This voluntary statement of participation by the Government of the Republic of Ireland lacks any degree of real commitment and does nothing to give our clients any degree of confidence in it.'

Multi million pound boost announced for video games sector

The UK Government has announced a £30 million funding initiative for the video gaming industry. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said that the Games Growth package will provide £10 million each year over the next three years when it is announced this week as part of the government's Modern Industrial Strategy. Nearly 80% of video games developers are located outside London in a national network of creative hubs – with hits such as Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto, Little Big Planet and PowerWash Simulator. Scotland's contribution to the industry is strong with development hubs in Edinburgh and in Dundee. Rockstar North based at Holyrood is the studio behind Grand Theft Auto. This award of funding is part of the Creative Industries Sector Plan being unveiled this week with an Expanded UK Games Fund, enhancing the London Games Festival to strengthen investor partnerships, creating a new Video Games Council to help studios in the UK access the global gaming market and establishing a UK Games Skills Network creating pathways into the business. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: 'The government's Industrial Strategy will be yet more proof that we are serious about turbocharging the growth of our creative industries, as we deliver our Plan for Change. The UK's video games sector is a true national success story, with iconic titles created in studios from Dundee to Brighton. 'This £30 million investment package will help our talented developers turn brilliant ideas into exciting new games, create high-skilled jobs, secure investment and drive growth across the UK. By backing our games developers with the funding they need, we're ensuring the next Tomb Raider or Little Big Planet will be made right here in Britain.' Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: 'This new funding will help further power up Scotland's standing as a significant player in the global video games industry. The sector is a key part of our Industrial Strategy and already employs thousands of people directly and indirectly, generating hundreds of millions of pounds for our economy. 'As home to some of the world's most successful and influential games, the video gaming industry is central to our Brand Scotland campaign to boost exports and inward investment too, demonstrating that the likes of Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow are a centre of excellence in this cutting edge field as we push into new markets and further strengthen the sector. 'Earlier this year I met the publishers of Grand Theft Auto VI – the most anticipated video game of all time and it's made in Scotland and then sold across the planet. 'With a global reputation for creativity and technical excellence, the established big players – along with smaller studios and start-ups distributed across the country – mean we are well-positioned for future growth and international impact. This UK Government investment boost is central to our Plan for Change to create more jobs across the country and put more money in the pockets of working Scots.' Without non-doms, who will pay for Labour's bloated state?

We are not the fastest growing economy in the G7, even though the Labour party promised that we would be. We are not topping any tables for inward investment, and we have fallen to the bottom of the league for new companies listed on the stock market. Still, it is good to know that there is still one measure where the UK economy comfortably beats the rest of the world. We are now losing more millionaires than any rival nation. The exodus of wealth out of the UK, it appears, is accelerating – and very soon this is going to turn into a big problem for the Chancellor Rachel Reeves. The UK was already one of the countries that the wealthy were fleeing. But according to a report out today by the advisers Henley & Partners, a record 16,500 millionaires will leave the UK in 2025. This is double the number fleeing China, which comes in at number two on the rankings and which is expected to lose 7,800 this year. It is the first time the UK has topped the annual table, and its lead over the rest of the world is not only huge, it is also accelerating. It is now official. The rich are getting out of Britain in increasing numbers. The ending of non-dom status has driven many of the wealthy foreigners out of the country It is not hard to understand why. The ending of non-dom status has driven many of the wealthy foreigners out of the country. The decision to impose inheritance tax at 40 per cent, one of the highest rates in the world, on their global assets was unsurprisingly a major factor in persuading them to leave. The price of remaining in the UK is now punitively high if you are not British. But it goes beyond that. The UK has developed a very unappealing tax system, with high rates of income tax, a rising rate of corporation tax, increasing rates of Capital Gains Tax, especially for entrepreneurs, along with higher dividend taxes, frozen thresholds, and very high rates of stamp duty and VAT. It is not just the non-doms heading for Dubai and elsewhere. It is the well-off British as well. Of course, the left will celebrate that, and the Starmer government certainly has no time for the millionaires expected to leave this year. But here is the catch. The UK is also uniquely dependent on a small number of well-off people to support its bloated, free-spending state. The top 1 per cent of taxpayers pay 29 per cent of all the revenue from income tax, while the top 10 per cent pay 60 per cent of the total. Other countries take more out of the economy in tax overall, but they squeeze the money out of a broader range of people. The UK relies on a handful of people – many of whom are now leaving. The risk for Reeves is that the exodus now develops a momentum of its own. If that happens, the UK's already precarious public finances will be in even worse shape than they already are – and she will have only herself to blame.
